I really don't understand people that call marg and cotto hype jobs. There both class fighters who produce big exciting fights. The people who are making silly schemes to call them overated are just plain haters, who we don't really want to see on this forum.
I'm pretty sure he used subtle as a description because most people just see Tony as a big bruiser with no skills whatsoever. Hes not slick but he does use technique.
He's at the stage in his career where he's become a really crafty veteran of the trade. He knows when to press for the knockout after breaking down his opponents mentally and then physically at which point they are ripe and defenseless for the taking. His punches come from all types of angles from both hands. He likes mixing up the speed and power of his punches to confuse opponents to catch them off guard. He also works the body consistently and is always digging shots even in the clinch to give no rest periods to opponents.
Back in his younger days he was extremely wild throwing all sorts of haymakers. He's much more calculating and reserved by comparison today as a seasoned pro. He's not a defensive expert by any stretch of the imagination but is never caught off balance despite criticism of being a wild puncher. Moreover, despite possessing slowish feet he's always in position to fire off combinations even against fast boxers.
Nothing subtle about stepping on a tomato. Margarito's got skills, but beating his opponents into pulp is not what I'd call "subtle." Brutal is a more apt word.

This much is true. My favorite moments in Margarito fights, is when he has his man hurt and he knows its time to go for the kill, I love how he feints with both hands. Just throws them out to the side to further confuse his opponent.
I thought he picked off with his gloves, many of Williams early shots through the first six rounds as well.

I don't think he's overrated, beating a pretty versatile fighter like Miguel Cotto in emphatic fashion pretty much answered a lot of questions, at least for me. Antonio Margarito has subtle boxing skills that a lot of people dismiss or don't notice, because first and foremost he's a balls to the wall type of fighters. Equipped with a Granite chin, elite stamina, and mental toughness which I admire in any fighter. I'm not a hardcore fan, but I respect him for his humble personality which I can definitely relate to.

Yes, because Cotto was massively overrated before he lost to Margarito, and now he's inherited whatever hype Cotto had.
Margarito is very good at what he does, but he will lose against anyone with good defense and lateral movement, and against anyone who manages to out outwork him (aka Williams).
Nope he isn't but in the past
I've heard
1. He'd K.O Hearns
2. He'd K.O Mayweather
3. He'd beat Tito
So its however you want to take it. But I'll admit that came from his idiot fans
I'd say he is just right
Not overated or Underated
all fighters have some idiot fans
on the whole he's not overrated... i mean he just beat one of the best pound for pound boxers in the world and fastest rising stars in sport so he should be on the top of the world (until the rematch that is)
He is Overrated by a few people.. But mostly he is underrated.. a few people seem to rate him just right..
I rate him as this... IF.. and I say IF.. you can't keep him off you.. you are fucked..
Margarito is not a hype job. The only reason people think he is overrated is because some of his fans are idiots who want others to believe he has had a better career than future Hall of Famers like Mayweather or Oscar.
He's amongst the very best. He definitely has his boxing limitations and his defensive vulnerablilities but the fact remains, he's not overrated or a hype job and puts anybody at welter through hell.
His resume puts him at the top for now, and a rematch with Williams down the line puts away any doubt of who the best is (even if it Williams). When it is all said and done though, nobody blows him away and he hangs with anybody.
No Margarito was actually very underated before his fight with Cotto.
He proved himself to be a top fighter at 147.
Maragarito's chin, workrate and toughness is one of the best in the game today. He is tough for any fighter at ww.
agreed 100%.
overated hypejobs fight nobodies and lose the 1st time they meet someone with a pulse.
marg has fought some tough competition.
Who is Amir Khan for $500 Alex?
Seriously, there couldn't ever be a more fitting name for a hypejob.
of course not... his hard fought victory over Cotto is enough to show he deserves to be where he is right now
are all of your threads flame-bait btw?
agreed.
