His fathers name is Enzo. Joe's nick name or at least one of them is the Italian Dragon. His dad is from Sardina Italy. So the question is raised how Italian is Joe Calzaghe?.....Lefty

biography
It's all to do with slave ownership, sadly. They took the surname of their owner. What with a lot of Welsh folk settling in the southern states of the US (3 or 4 of them signed the Declaration of Independence such as Thomas Jefferson) and some becoming slave traders and also the old British slave base being just on the Welsh border (Bristol) it's rather inevitable.
As for Calzaghe, if he's English due to the fact he spent three months in Hammersmith then I must be Zambian. And I tad fairer than your average resident of Lusaka.
i see the italian his enzo but not joe...
i wonder if more people on boxingscene start figuring out joe has an italian background that they will all start jumping on his bangwagon or if we are going to see some people come on here who claim they are "1/16th" italian...haha
Yeah my man from Brooklyn My Father is 100% Italian his parents came to the US in the earli 1920's My mother here dad was from Sicily so she was 50% Italian. That makes me 3/4 Italian and 1/4 of what I don't even know. But yes the fact that he is Italian makes him a little easier to like for me. I was a hater for a minute but watched the Jones fight read up about him and watched a few more of his fights on youtubr. I Still think he slaps but I got to give it to him he has heart and courage....Lefty
Agreed sir it didn't show or wasn;t as obvious to me until I did some research on him and read about him etc. Now that I look at him I can see some Italian features and his sons look somewhat italian as well. I can see his father Enzo on 18th Avenue working behind a pizza counter talking about Sunday dinner and eating some Baked Ziti with Meatballs....Lefty

The big question though.... Is Roy Jones Welsh?
You can't get a more Welsh name than Jones....
Yup. I'm a Jones too. My son is going to be called Roy :luvbed:
Funny thing is, Hopkins is a very common Welsh surname too.
I've thought about this same thing but i'd have to say that even though he has italian in his heritage he's more welsh/british than anything else...
his italian doesnt show...i mean on looks in difficult to tell with the welsh have many similar features as italians (dark hair/eyes, etc.)
what i mean by his italian doesnt show is his accent isnt even an italian accent...its a welsh accent...
you can just take one look at guys like peter manfredo jr or paulie malignaggi and say, "they are italian"...it just shows...in the way the look and definately in the way they are.

Jones is a common surname in Wales and England. It is the most common surname in Wales, despite there officially being no letter "J" in the Welsh language, although there are a few words borrowed from English language eg Jocan = Joke. This is because "Jones" is in spelling and pronunciation an anglicisation of the Welsh "ap Siôn" (= "Son Of John" = "Johnson"), in which the "Si" is pronounced /ʃ/ like an English "sh". Several surnames that are common in Wales are similar anglicisations of Welsh patronymic surnames
