There is no interest in Jones now, and Calzaghe has stated that he doesn't want the fight. There is no other name out there for him except Dawson( a fight that he stated he didn't want), so who is out there for him to fight? If he doesn't fight Dawson, then there is no one left for him to fight.
Watch Dawson fight, and you will see what i mean. Because talking about this fight with somone that hasn't seen Dawson fight is like talking to a brick wall, and i mean no offense. Name me one ranked southpaw that Joe has fought? (Dawson has fought about 6 southpaws with 3 of them being world class) Then tell me what natural light heavyweight Joe has fought that is as skilled and in their prime?
In Dawson, Joe would run into a slick BIG southpaw that is very versatile( unlike Kessler) has enough power to keep him at bay and enough skill on the outside to have the advantage tactically. Joe would run into some big counter right uppercuts( which Dawson loves to throw against other southpaws) and he has been down in 2 of his last fights, going down against Dawson ( a young strong guy) and early the way hes been doing could be critical. The problem is that neither Hopkins or Jones went after Calzaghe.
Because they couldn't. They were very old men and that's understandable. It's ridiculous someone going out of the sport after 2 consecutive mismatches and having a case of fighter of the _______ insert word. I don't know what Marciano did but i don't think even he went out on 2 mismatches although i know his record look like shit.
I respect Hopkins for not wanting Jones anymore. I think Dawson, Kessler, or Taylor.
Dawson - he's already said he doesn't want him, but still most likely. I think Hopkins wins, especially if it's in his time frame of no later than March.
Taylor - A 3rd, with Taylor doing the same, Hopkins even more likely to lose on work rate? Hopkins loses that one imo, worse than the other two unfortunately.
Kessler - Dissed him a bit to Calzaghe so not sure he'd be that up for it. Hopkins wins though I reckon.
I don't mind if he fights on or not. I'd actually like to see him go out on a win as he truly deserves it. He has one more fight in him based on his last performance, but can he really top that? Unlikely so maybe he's best to retire on that one.
I think what Hopkins wants (if he doesnt retire that is) is a rematch with Joe Calzaghe. Since Joe don't give rematches Hopkins needs to get the public to demand a rematch so bad that Joe has to take notice.
That will probably mean that Hopkins will have to look spectacular against a Joe opponent meaning that Hopkins should get Mikkel Kessler and defeat him with a dominating KO.
At 43 Hopkins is getting worse and worse. A rematch with Joe will show Bernard outclassing Joe for 6 rounds and unable to close the show or hold his winnings on the course of 12. I don't want to see yet another mismatch so i hope this doesn't happen. Look at 08, full of mismatches! And we still have Oscar Pacquiao coming up Jesus! And to think they managed to make some people believe Pac has a chance...
Kid, Chad Dawson makes for a very easy fight for Calzaghe. This will be the easiest prediction of '09 if it comes off. Dawson will compete for two or three rounds and then become entirely befuddled by Joe's shifting rythms. This is the worst fight Dawson could ever take.

Chad Dawson or Mikkel Kessler
nothing to gain from kessler. b-hop should fight dawson so he can force a fight with calzaghe. perhaps if he is more respectful, joe will let it happen...
Where do people come up with this notion that Chad punches hard? He doesn't have very good power for a 175 lber. He's got great speed for that weight, but below average power.
Hes not a one punch knockout artist but he definitely punches hard, and for someone to see that they will have actually watch him fight, instead of just looking at a knock out record( no offense). He staggered Adamek in the 11th round with a counter right hook off of the ropes and did something that Lacy( a power puncher) couldn't do in 12 rounds, which is to stop Mendoza and it only took 4 rounds.
Lol, if Dawson fights either Hopkins or Calzaghe then I'm betting ALL of my points. I have ran this fight down and analyzed over a dozen times, and i can't see neither of them beating Chad. For someone to trouble Dawson, they will have to have power and bring educated pressure with a little skill with it, like a light heavyweight version of Margarito or Pavlik.

I'll be happy to take your points if this fight gets made. :D
Calzaghe/Hopkins/Johnson >>> Dawson

Hopkins would land counter right hands at will on Dawson....I can see Dawson getting hurt, frustrated and possibly knocked down...It would be an intersting matchup.
I agree about it being an interesting match up based on youth and experience, but Dawson is too fast and big. Bernard would run into the same problems he ran into against Taylor and Calzaghe. A fighter with fresher legs that just simply out works him. Where Hopkins would run into even more problems with Dawson is the fact that Chad punches harder than both of them and is naturally bigger so he won't be as easy to man handle the way he did Pavlik and Calzaghe. Also, just because Dawson is a southpaw doesn't mean he is vulnerable to counter right hands. His defense has picked up and if he brings educated presser and just keeps working, then Hopkins will fade and look as bad( or even worse) then he did against Calzaghe.
I'd put my money on Hopkins over Dawson
Hopefully that fight happens
You also put your money on Adamek, Johnson and Tarver to beat Dawson as well. :D The streak is just not looking too good.
Dawson. If Calzaghe doesn't retire and they both want him, a win over the other is the way to get him as the winner instantly becomes the man in the division and the only fight for Calzaghe that makes any sense at all. If Dawson won, B-Hop would be the name on his resumé that lifts him into the Calzaghe league (particularly as far as Calzaghe's home fans are concerned) while if B-Hop wins he qualifies as LHW number one IMHO, and Calzaghe would want that back and undisputed before retiring, whatever he may happen to think of B-Hop. Wouldn't surprise me if Calzaghe cleared up a little 'unfinished business' with Glen Johnson in the meantime.
If he can't get the rematch with Joe (which it doesn't look like he will) I honestly think we might have seen the end of Bernard. I just don't think Dawson brings the kind of money that BHop would want to fight a prime hungry guy and there isn't anyone else.
Agreed, i think Bernard should retire now before he runs into someone that's too young and just too much. A second rematch with Taylor is the only thing left that makes sense and that is not a super fight. All of the stars are either washed up or not willing to fight him.

That is what i don't understand about Joe, It appears to me that he is not retiring but is not willing to face the two top guys at 175 in Dawson and Hopkins so whats the point staying on ?? There is no one else at 175 worth fighting besides those two. If he isn't willing to fight them then he should retire and let them fight for the vacant ring belt.
I agree 100%. I think what he may do is fight Carl Froach( if he beat Pascal) for a farewell fight in Wales. That would be a big fight over there and it is two unbeaten champions.
I understand what you mean, i think that this is the fight that should be made. These are two of the best light heavyweights and if Calzaghe won't fight neither of them, then they should fight each other for the ring magazine title that Joe is about to vacate( if he is actually retiring).

Hopkins is ducking Dawson. He has to fight Dawson to get any respect from me lol his resume is full of old men and bums. Dawson would be the first prime elite fighter he has faced lamo Dawson wins imo.
