I'm fairly certain that the criteria for entry into the HOF aren't limited purely to accomplishments inside the ring. Which is absolutely right, IMO. After all, Ali brought kudos to the sport as much for his non-fighting achievements as anything else. And it's only right that those achievements be recognised.
McGuigan's tenure as world champ may have been short, but when you factor in his deeds in the sectarian cauldron that was Northern Ireland during the eighties it suddenly adds up to something pretty significant. And let's not forget that he is a perceptive and articulate boxing writer, part time trainer and ambassador for the sport worldwide.
I don't have any issues with his inclusion whatsoever.

McGuigan is one of the lesser picks ever for the Hall. It's retarded that he's in and other guys from his neck of the woods (like Benn and Eubank) haven't even been up for a vote yet.
Nice to see you read the rest of the threads.
Nothing. He was shit! He was champ for one year and a bar room brawling bum. He was a sore loser too and got battered by Cruz who was a nobody. People makje excuses about the heat but that's bullshit! Other people had tough fights and get cols, but use their power to bail out like Naz did V Medina when he had some kinda disease.
Brits love a bum like this and rate him higher than Naz! I'm quite sure he was champ for more than a year an never lost to no bums! Even Barrera lost a few rounds and didn't stop him. Barry finsihed his career by being stopped by a bum. He was a glorified clubfighter

Well cant see many of todays fighters trying to do much good out the ring shame really. Maybe the sport isn't as important as it used to be.
I would be interested to hear of any big name boxers really trying to do something outside of boxing
I enjoyed watching McGuigan, but have to say that his inclusion into the Hall of Fame is unwarranted. He was a v.good fighter - good head movement, great engine, and had a variety of punches in his armoury. But to get into the HoF, you need more than that.
His best wins were against only LaPorte and Pedroza. He fought superbly against Pedroza, but the Panamanian was past his best.
He struggled badly against Cabrera and Taylor.
To be fair to him, it was only the heat that beat him against Cruz, but if he had fought Esparragoza or Nelson they'd have beaten him anywhere.
A worthy world champion he certainly was; Hall of famer, definitely not.
He united Catholics and Protestants for the sport of boxing in Northern Ireland when the troubles were at their worst.
He was also a very good boxer with a tireless work ethic and slick technical abilities.
He's Irish, nuff said.
Damn straight.
In all seriousness, I think they may have taken into account that his fights helped bridge the community divide between catholics and prodestants in Northern Ireland. Which is a very weird thing to put you into the boxing hall of fame...but still, I believe it may have had something to do with that.
OH and he won Gordan Ramsey's Hell's Kitchen.
I'm pretty sure he was some sort of boxer.
Can you tell me what he accomplished to get into the hall of fame?
He had one good win. If it only takes good win then i could think of a hundred boxers who should also get in the hall
