JEFF LACY: "I FEEL LIKE I WON THE JERMAIN TAYLOR FIGHT"
By G. Leon
GL: Can you give us some thoughts on your performance against Jermain Taylor and tell us what went wrong? "I think I did everything right. If you turn the volume off the television set, you'll see a totally different fight. I feel I pushed the action of the fight. Jermain Taylor held me every time I got close to him. He got shots in and so did I. But from the telecast, they're not talking about nothing I did and nothing I was throwing that was penetrating and that's what made it seem like a one-sided fight. If you turn the volume off your television and view the fight again, you'll see a totally different fight. I was the aggressor in the fight."
GL: Does that mean you feel you won the fight?
Jeff Lacy: "Yes. I feel like I won the fight."
GL: What were you doing that the judges weren't seeing?
Jeff Lacy: "I felt the judges were overlooking the aggressiveness that I was showing and the fact that he was holding the whole time."
GL: Do you feel you should have been credited with a knockdown?
JL: "Yes. Most definitely. I never touched his foot, I never stepped on his foot. We didn't step on each others feet the whole fight."
GL: So there was nothing about him that surprised you, you feel like you did what you had to do to get the victory and just didn't get it?
JL: "Exactly. I pressed the action of the fight from round one to twelve."
GL: How do you rate your performance?
JL: "In watching the fight I think there's some things I would have done differently, but I give myself at least a B+ for the performance I put on."
GL: You certainly don't sound discouraged at all, you sound lively. When might we expect to see you back in the ring?
JL: "The thing about it is Greg, I understand what they were doing. Jermain Taylor is a good fighter and I'm not taking anything away from what he did. I felt like Jermain fought a fight like that before. He has never come out and fought like that before and the fact of the matter is, I shut Jermain down. He's not going to tell you, but I shut Jermain down. You look at his performance against me and he was unable to do a lot of things that he normally does. I thought I lead the fight and I stopped Jermain from doing a lot of things he thought he was going to be able to do with me."
GL: Were you hurt at any point of the fight?
JL: "I was hurt a couple of times, but this is boxing, He caught me with a couple of shots that wobbled me, but I never took a backwards step."
GL: Does a rematch interest you or do you feel the powers that be won't ever let you take a decision over him?
JL: "I would love a rematch with Jermain Taylor. Would I get it due to the way I shut him down and prevented him from fighting his fight? I don't think I'll get a rematch. Should we fight again, I would go into it totally different. I wouldn't leave it in the judges hands next time. I had a lot of things going through my mind for the first couple of rounds, how do you hit a friend? I shouldn't have gotten that involved and just went off. He hit me and I hit him, but I didn't feel like any of us were in there to kill each other. What I came in there to do showed up, I just didn't get credit for it."
GL: What's the soonest we could expect you back?
JL: "As soon as Golden Boy can get me back in the ring."
GL: Who are some of the guys that interest you?
JL: "It doesn't matter. I'll let you be my promoter for this interview. You tell me."
GL: You know who people would love to see you fight, but it would be inapproriate for me to answer that since I represent Allan Green.
JL: "You know what though, Allan Green needs to prove himself at the same time. Allan Green isn't at the same level as a fighter like myself. Allan Green has to prove himself, I'm not going to just give somebody an opportunity. I would fight Allan Green and I have no problem fighting him, but at the same time he's going to have to prove himself to get it."
GL: Closing thoughts?
JL: "I won that fight, turn the volume off and you'll see a different outcome than what you saw on television."
LOL!
Ay, there might be some truth to this. I saw a Tyson interview one time after he lost to Holyfield, and I'm pretty sure he said he thought he'd won the fight, right up until the post-fight press conference?
But seriously, this Lacy interview is f'king ridiculous. He's getting as bad as Audley Harrison in terms of deluded-ness (if that's even a word).
Yes I saw that interview, but Mike is just crazy .
Delusion
(usually if it doesn't sound right, it's because you're making it too complicated ;))
Thanks for the English lesson, D. :)

Lacy's not a hugger?
He's survived his last two fights by hanging onto his opponents.
I only saw the Taylor fight and I didn't think he was excessively hugging say e.g. like Hopkins in the Winky fight :P Of course, he is going to hug if he just took a good shot and is trying to not get KO'd.
Yeah, but while Taylor may not have hit him as many times or bloodied him as much, he hit Lacy's head so goddamn hard he's got the guy thinking he won the fight.:rofl::rofl:

Damn good post. I agree that Lacy vs. Miranda would be the best possible match for both fighters. Lacy clearly lost but it looked to me to be his most spirited effort since Calzaghe. He lost, but deserves credit for the effort.
Yeah Lacy defintely has one of the biggest Hearts in all of boxing.....unfortunately that doesn't always win fights. Nobody can ever knock his effort though.
slightly off topic but what do you think is next for lacy now? He obviously thinks he is still up there with the best at SMW from this interview. Personally, I would like to see a matchup with Mundine. Would be quite the clash in styles but neither are huggers so could be quite an entertaining fight.

Well heres my thoughts and I'm a huge Lacy fan. He lost plain and simple. Yes it was defintely a knockdown but counted or not it wouldn't have changed the outcome. Taylor did hold but I wouldn't call it exsessively......Being aggressive and eating clean shots all night unfortunately doesn't win you a fight Mr. Lacy. Lacy vs Miranda anyone? similar skill level non stop action fight....I'd love to see it. Both have proven they are good fighters, contenders but not Championship material.....Lets see it.

I did see him raise his hands in victory when the winner was announced and he did look dissapointed.
I had a feeling something was gonna be said.. no way he won that fight though.
Lacey must think he won because of that damn knockdown, before the decision he kept talking about it. Friend or not Taylor should have just TKO'd him in the third instead of tying him up, being the nice guy he is.
Yeah, but while Taylor may not have hit him as many times or bloodied him as much, he hit Lacy's head so goddamn hard he's got the guy thinking he won the fight.:rofl::rofl:
lmao...thats a good one.
So Taylor lands more punches and is more accurate than Lacy according to compubox, but him pressuring should've won him the fight? Man I hate sore losers in this sport, Taylor shouldn't have carried him. He's complaining about the holding, but I remember him doing most of the holding when Taylor first had him hurt, the guy even held right after the ref broke them apart
It wasn't the fact that Joe just beat Lacy, it was the way he did it. He shut a lot of mouths that night, not just Jeff's.

Which fool said Lacy is Joe's best win? Are you nuts? Eubank, Reid, Kessler, Brewer, Mitchell, and possibly one or two others are better wins... Lacy is way down the list!
