When do you think Jones became SHOT?

I voted after Ruiz but that is mainly because I see it as the main contributing factor. If we are talking when it actually became apparent that the man was done then it is Tarver II onwards.

I didnt se anything wrong with him until the Glen johnson fight where he was basically treated like a rag-doll by Johnson, He was lackluster in the first Tarver fight and was okay in the second fight until the okay happened. But in the johnson fight it was like Johnson was fighting a bum.

He was still crazy good in 99 though. Hmmm you tihnking Reggie Johnson his last peak performance? I actually might agree with that. It's just that Griffin 2 + Virgil Hill were unbelievable. I would say that stopping a fighter of Hill caliber with one bodyshot ranks among the most incredible things I have seen in a ring.

I think Jones was peak until like 98. He showed slipping against Woods imo, but was still so ahead of everyone else, that no one noticed. In the 1st Tarver fight, he still had all the instinct with him. Same in Tarver 2. By the Johnson fight he was completely shot. He was still crazy good in 99 though.

I've said this time and time again in this thread. there must have been something wrong with him at age 35. why? he would have never been dominated by Glen Johnson in his prime.

Strange how most people think he was shot after Ruiz, but i dont remember people saying that at the time. He wasnt as good when he fought Tarver, but Tarver gave him a tough fight and Jones still won. Hardly shot.

I don't think Roy Jones is shot yet. I think he's just been brought back down to earth, he can be hit now so he has to bring a better approach in future fights. I can't lie it hurt to see that fight because you could see the hope in Jones eyes in that 1st round just to have it all shattered for 11 rounds after that. I fully respect and support Calzaghe, I would've won had I bet money but I still feel for Jones, for many years now he's been one of my favorite fighters deservingly his conditioning just caught up to him is all.. if this fight took place anywhere from 8-10 years ago when it was supposed to happen Jones would've killed Joe. he would've knocked him out, I'm sure of this because joe is not hard to hit and doesn't punch half as much when you give him odd angles and quick, HARD punches to the mug. to beat Joe you either gotta out punch him or confuse the shit stains off his trunks and back then Roy was physically gifted enough to do so, now however he is nowhere near there but since we grew so used to seeing him invincible once he stops performing at that level he's shot.. but in this case he's not. long story short Roy still has pop in his punches he just needs to never stop throwing, he does a lot of movement with no throwing and he purposely backs himself into a corner and just stays there not throwing punches and just moving around. to win you must land punches and Roy wont ever do that if he's not throwing any shots. real talk though if Roy just can bring more aggression over 12 rounds he'll be good. I'm talking about REAL aggression too u know attacking fiercely at his opponents, he can do that still even though it wont ever be as good as before. people think he's shot because he's on a losing page in his Boxing book but think about it, he went 12 HARD rounds with Joe Calzaghe and didn't even drop, he drops Joe regardless how and actually stunned him. he dealt well with the cut and continued fighting it's just time caught up with him and against Joe Calzaghe you can't afford that to happen. Hopkins looked better because styles makes fights, his philly shell stance is designed to slip punches, it's a hunched in kind of style where all you do is roll around and you can sort of deflect punches while being in position to throw your own. Jones however has a more open style, he keeps his hands low, he pulls straight back and a lot of times he's on the defensive, a style where back in the day due to his physical gifts he was able to get away with that but now he can't because he doesn't have enough behind it. the styles determind the fight with Joe, they both dropped him in the 1st round and both ended up losing pretty bad being hit more than they have ever been hit before in a prize fight. the problem here isn't Roy Jones Jr though it's Joe Calzaghe, his punch rate makes it look a whole lot worse than what it was but in truth I was actually impressed by Jones, to finish a fight against a guy like that after taking such a brutal beating showed his heart. if he comes back better prepared he can do something against other fighters.. Calzaghe would have beaten the Jones who fought Tarver in the first fight.

After the second Tarver fight he became shot. People forget that Jones was good enough to beat Tarver in their first fight, so cleary he was not shot especially since Tarver was in his prime and at the top of his game. I think that the second fight with Tarver damaged him badly, and he was never the same again after that.

If that punch was lucky, then so was B-hops on Joe, Glenn Johnson's on Roy and Tarvers on Jones. Just cannot say that. The bottom of the glove still connected and still hurt Joe. Simple as that. Who knows if Joe would have dropped had the top of the glove connected. I know one thing, Joe sharpens up after he's in danger. The uppercut Roy hit him with in rd. 6 would have dropped anybody else in the division. I disagree, because Tarver himself called it the perfect punch, and questioned whether he would be able to do it again. It was a lunging left hook that Tarver threw with his EYES CLOSED, that Roy just never saw coming. Even Antionio knows he got lucky.

I said after the knockout, and I will explain. Before that, it was clear Jones was no longer in his prime. He was slowing down and starting to look older. He did still have many of the tools he had in his prime. Roy became shot after the Tarver knockout because after that fight, he lost his edge. He was no longer "unknockoutable" and his approach changed. He let other fighters set the precident, see Johnson, Tarver III and Cal. A prime Roy would never have done this. Roy was ultra confident, would press the action, and know he was going to beat you. After the knockout, he was never the same, espicially becuase before the Ruiz fight he was significantly past his peak.

a HEAVY decline? no... he stopped woods in the 6th... thats not a HEAVY decline... tarver II... is a HEAVY decline roy looked alright in the 2nd fight even though we didn't get to see too much but in the 1st tarver fight he did not look like himself

Roy Became Shot!! After Roy was knocked out by Tarver in the second fight he was DAMAGED. He fought Glen Johnson without realizing that his body had changed although he felt mentally that he was the same. He found out in Rd. 9 of the fight that he was not himself and probably would never be again.
