By this I mean will he take his first loss at the hands of a veteran and be a completely different, broken fighter afterwards? He got beat soundly by Hopkins.I am interested in what people think.
My personal opinion is NO, he will not go the way of the Lacy's and the Hamed's of the world. Keep in mind it was Kelly's first fight at 170, and he was facing a man who just barely lost to the pound for pound #1 or 2, in Joe Calzaghe. Kelly lost to a Hopkins who was the best Hopkins we've seen in a while. Kelly is still a beast at his weight of 160. Lacy was fighting Calzaghe at 168, and was undefeated at 168, but he lost bad. Kelly is still undefeated at 160, and will continue to fight at 160, where he has done nothing but impressed. So to all the people claiming Kelly is going to fade like Lacy, he's still undefeated at 160 lbs. and is still the ****in champ. watch and see just how good he will be in the years to come. I promise.
I picked the second option.
Kelly isnt the kind of guy to surrender in the face of adversity, not from what I have seen of him. He is probably still the best fighter at 160 in the world, and I believe he will come back and prove that.
Remember I said that. You can either praise me or make me eat my words in the future.
Lets get this out of the way first - Pavlik was not proven. Taylor had fallen by the wayside since the Hopkins fights and Miranda never was. The rest = not a lot.
It's a very accurate parallel IMO so it'll be interesting. He didn't take as bad a beating as Lacy but it was still a comprehensive schooling. It'll be interesting to see how he comes back.
I hope he takes this loss very seriously, and becomes another De La Hoya type. A guy who, regardless of whether or not they are winning, stills draws big audiences and makes exciting fights
I wish I made this a public poll. all the people who voted No didn't have the balls to identify themselves.
I voted no, but wish there had been more options...
I don't think Hopkins ruined Pavlik, because I think Pavlik will still have every tool he had before at 160... that said, I think Hopkins laid the blueprint for other fighters to beat the guy in the future.
So... ruined? No. Exposed? Yes.
I wish he could dump Loew. I feel that Pavlik may be too loyal to his roots to dump Loew though, something which I admire but am skeptical of as well, because Loew I think has taught Kelly as much as he is ever gonna teach him. It's time to bring in some more advanced, fresher ideas so Kelly can take the next step. Loew is well intentioned when it comes to Pavlik, but we all know that he is not the best trainer available to Kelly. Hopefully they can part ways as friends, and do it soon, before Kelly is 36 sitting in his corner and still hearing "You gotta double up the Fukkin jab!"
Simliar to Hatton/Grahman...
Out with the old in with the new i say...
i think if he brought in a new trainer he could really solidify his game.
he got beat by bernard, there is no shame in that. he got a free lesson, he didnt have to lose his belts, it showed him he is not invincible and has alot to learn.
i wish someone like roach or steward could get pavlik. jack leow just doesnt have the credentials.

I don't think so, Pavlik will always beat guys with his reach, power, heart and chin and stamina along with being fundamentally technically sound. But..............
There will also be another guy that will come along and have his number too however. He is a world class fighter but I don't think he'll be a dominant champ. He'll always be in an around the top of the middleweight division but I don't think he can reign supreme.
Nah, the loss will harden him. It'll teach him not to rely on his power all the time and to sharpen up his ring smarts.
I agree. I'm still wondering why he didn't throw more punches against Bernard though. Did anyone else notice how much less active he was up at 170? He seemed like he had nothing on his punches. I think he needs to stay down at 160 for a while, and when he decides to go to SMW to do it gradually. Jumping up 10 lbs. is not right for a guy like Kelly, he needs to ease into the higher weight.
na, i think he will be fine. it was a good lesson for him, and humbling.
I agree. The only thing i wish is that they moved him back in the ring a lil faster. I woulda liked Pavlik -Rubio in late December, right before Christmas. Or a tune up fight, then rubio in feb, and Abraham in June
