All this talk of Hopkins ten years ago and Roy ten years ago, Joe was faster back then and he had a higher workrate. Joe is 37 years old, his skills reached their peak a long time ago and have been slowly descending since.
Just because most of you "fans" have only seen his last four fights you presume he is still in his prime, yeah he's in good shape but like any 37 year old athlete his best years are behind him.
BHop and Roy never could have matched his work ethic in the ring. Never. So cut this ten years ago crap, Joe C beat Bhop and he massacred Superman.
Now deal with it.
All the opening post is saying is that Calzaghe was better in certain ways 10 years ago than he is now, and that he would always have had the advantage when it comes to workrate.
Nothing about RJJ or Hopkins being prime, nothing about Calzaghe being shot, just that he is not at his absolute best.
No offence, but your post is almost entirely irrelevant.
And yes, age does have a lot to do with prime. It's not the only factor, but to say it has nothing to do with it is just reedickyaluss:p
The only person who actually read my post evidently. I did not mention skill or intelligence.
For those of you saying Joe is a better athlete now than he was ten years ago are mental patients. I've been watching Joe Calzaghe for a long time, and trust me although he is in very good condition, but naturally ,like other fighters his work rate is slowly but surely descending.
Joe's toughest opposition came in the latter stage of his career, it's no coincidence that they were his best performances.
This thread was to counter the argument that BHop or RJJ could have matched or nullified Calzaghe's work rate ten years ago. They neglect to factor into the equation that Joe's stamina and cardio were better 10 years ago.
Once again. End of.

Um Roy was MUCH fast years ago too..
Much faster than Joe Calzaghe
If Robin Reid nailed the shit outta a prime JC then a Prime Roy would tatoo that easily..
Very true. Us Americans haven't really seen a lot of Joe's youth.
Alot of Euros havent seen a lot of Roys youth..
See these videos, this is a ton of good footage from his earlier fights u probably havent seen

Calzaghe will never be as good as roy, bhop, or toney.. period..
I know they are the past, and he is now, but this is the reality..
I have no problem with that, but when people say ridiculously stupid shit, I'll call them on it.
yeah i mean, he definitely was human, I mean shit he even had a tough time with Eric Harding for a few rounds.
well in a way he was untouchable.
not in a sense that he never had any trouble ever. But that even in fights he did struggle, he always found a way to win. For example, Montell Griffin gave Roy some trouble. But by the end of the fight Roy was winning, until he hit Griffin while he was down.(mistake by roy). But then in the rematch roy starched Griffin in 1 round.
during those 14 years not many came close to beating him. Until he shed 24 lbs of muscle at age 34 to fight the hungry Antonio Tarver. After that he was never the same.

and yet, it totally disproves the notion that Roy was untouchable as the quoted poster said.

If he was so good back then, why did he wait until 2006 to take a real fight and prove himself????
could have, would have... just like Mayweather in the welter division.. He didn't!
He should have fought them in his prime then.. simple as that.
No one's fault but his own.
at the end of the day this is true!
Joe was a much less intelligent fighter 10 years ago also.
You of all posters should not be questioning the intelligence of anyone.
"machines can do those jobs".
Therein lies the proof. When people talk about Jones struggle with high-volume pressure fighters in his prime, you just know they don't know what they're talking about.
When people compare Calzaghe to some of the fighters Jones fought and call him a "pressure fighter", you just know they dont know what they're talking about.

this is a myth. Calzaghe was a much better fighter against Kessler/Lacy than he was 10 years ago, when he struggled against Robin Reid and was getting countered with some pretty damn hard right hands. I thought he lost that fight personally, but it could have gone either way.
I dont think his workrate was higher 10 years ago, but he might have been a little faster and hit harder. skill wise, he definitely wasnt better 10 years ago.
he is slowly starting to go downhill though.
A prime roy doesnt need to match any workrate of any fighter... a prime roy also MOVES around the ring, just as fast as joe would move in, roy could move out..
gatti is SHOT at 35... Vargas SHOT at 33, Morales SHOT at 34-35...
EVERYONE is different... at 36, calzaghe is having some of his best performances and wins of his entire career...
2 months shy of 40... roy hasnt beaten an elite fighter in 5 years, and been knocked out twice....
Joe might be coming out of his prime... but roy hasnt been prime in 5 years... and after watching that fight... he is definitely shot as a fighter...
u really cant say... oh, there 3 years apart so its no big deal...
some guys are DONE at 34... some are still whoopin ass at 43...
everyone has different peaks and primes, age has nothign to do with it
He had the same slap happy style and found it hard to find the 43 year old Hopkins. Jones and B-Hop were also faster 10 years ago. The reason why he fought them at the tender age of 40+ is because he knows they would have knocked him out back then. Calslappy is a fraud. Why does he have no credible prime opponents on his CV? Make some excuses for me.
Its almost as though some of you guys think that Calzaghe chose not to fight Hopkins or Jones until they were both past their prime. As if he has that power. Jones or Hopkins never wanted Calzaghe and never needed him, they were big American fighters making lots of money and he was a small British fighter, bringing little money to the table and a lot of danger for little reward. There is a reason why those fights werent made until they were passed their prime and that reason is because neither of them ever wanted or needed Calzaghe until they were after their prime. Calzaghe only deserves blame for this if you're going to give equal if not more blame to those two too. Calzaghe was never in a position to MAKE fights he wanted. Both of those two were.
Since you clearly have never seen a Roy fight in his prime, he ate up pressure fighters and workrate fighters.
And you call anyone else uninformed? Roy struggled with counterpunchers.
End stupid thread.
Therein lies the proof. When people talk about Jones struggle with high-volume pressure fighters in his prime, you just know they don't know what they're talking about.
Hopkins is getting better with age.
Jones is still great.
Calzaghe is actually worse now.
The logic on here is mind-boggling sometimes.
Courtesy of the patented, Joe Calzaghe's Italian Dragon lenses.
I think Roy has the faster hands out of the 2 right now, but his hand speed was decreasing in every round against Joe... prime for prime it aint even close...
Yup, Roy's age really showed up on Saturday (with the help of Calzaghe of course)
