If 1996 Roy could fight 2008 Roy it would be over in 1 round. Look at the energy, the reflexes the legs, the combinations. Prime Roy could nail you fro 10 feet away he was so cat quick.
No way does Calzaghe put his hands down and clown against this Roy. He would get caught with a upercut so fast.
Prime Roy was damn near unbeatable, the fastest fighter ever, Roy was like the flash, fast hands, fast reflexes and fast feet...
I hate when peope try to discredit him for losses that came in his mid 30's and late 30's actin like that was his prime or some shit..
btw prime Roy beats prime Joe on some 9-3 shit, Roy was that great... the only Roy that Joe beat was the year and half older Roy who struggled aganst Hanshaw
Prime Jones not only went to the ropes to rest but to create countering opportunities while offering a different illusion (see: Hopkins fight, Brannon fight, Woods fight).
i know..i love me some roy jones..but in retrospect prime for prime it wouldve been a good fight..roy always had a habit of backing up to the ropes..and joe wouldve pressed the fight
i see a competitive fight but UD for jones..
damn he looks the same against the ropes..he fights the exact same way..just the guy wasnt pressing him..shit
but he was able to put together lightning fast combos to back his opponant off him..he would have been to hit calzone with something hard between his wide slaps..
also the fight would be in the middle of the ring most of the fight as roys work rate was much higher
I have a problem with the fact that everyone someone mentions Jones at his total peak of powers in his prime it is a fight against a bum. He also beat a small very green Hopkins, and James Toney that could hardly move let alone throw a decent punch or pressure Jones.
He had great skill at his peak but was never tested that much. Funny how as soon as he gets tests in recent years he past his best.
Still a great fighter though. Just lacks a killer touch more, more a style machine.
hes 40 years old, hasnt beaten an elite fighter in 5 years and been KTFO twice....
So what the hell are you talking about
better to watch roy beat otis grant, he was a much better fighter than lucas. if you really wanna see prime roy, watch him knock montell griffin the f.uck out, that's prime roy
Good Point. I was trying to find footage of Roy highlights over a long period in a fight to show his overall speed and skills. The Montell fight was over so quick.
Yeah, Roy was impressive against Lucas. I still think the absolute prime version of Roy was against Toney. Everything came together that night. I have seen that fight over 10 times and every time I watch it I am still surprised at how good Roy was.
Max Kellerman(a modern boxing historian) said that Eric Lucas was underated win. I remember he said that. This is another case of Roy beating a solid guy, but him being called a bum because hes not a big name.

I would have to disagree. It would have to be the 2nd Montell Griffin fight. Go back to the 1st fight, although Roy was carrying the fight and about to win , he took some good shots. Griffin was no pushover, he was pretty good. Anyway. In the 2nd fight, I saw a very hungry and motivated Roy Jones Jr. The outcome spoke 4 itself. He destroyed Griffin. That version of Jones would've fvcked Calzaghe up without a doubt.
Ive seen almost all of Roy's fights. Prime Roy was the best thing Ive seen in my lifetime.
But you have to take into account the opposition. Eric Lucas is not Calzaghe. Not by a long shot.
yeah, i was a jones fan in the 90's when he was prime roy, i watched that fight with lucas when it happened, it was like hopkins did to kelly pavlik but like the diggler said, lucas was not an elite guy. i'm not sure lucas could beat sven ottke, and he lost to markus beyer and kessler.
diggler, you're an allright bloke
