At 46-0 and a young 36 years old, Joe Calzaghe should fight on and attempt to surpass Rocky's legendary undefeated record before hanging them up for good.
Possible opponents for Joe in his final year or two as a fighter:
Bernard Hopkins
Chad Dawson
Glen Johnson
Arthur Abraham
Jermain Taylor
Kelly Pavlik
Lucian Bute
If he can run through 4 of the above mentioned names and retire with an unblemished 50-0 record, he'll have clearly cemented his status as an ATG in the eyes of many, in the UK as well as in the US. I think he can do it and he should.

What about all of the other great fighters who didn't surpass Marciano's record? Are they less great for not surpassing some statistic?
No, but it sure would be a nice record to go out on, especially given that he's just beat Roy and B-Hop in back to back fights, granted they are past their best years. He could shut up all the critics in the U.S. (like me)
he wont even try, too worried about losing his 0.......the only way he would go for the record is if he could fight guys on manfredo's level, c+ fighters from here on out..........
If I were Joe, I'd aim for 50-0 myself. For the following reason.
He would best Marciano, something that's never been done. And would take him to the "ATG" list with not a single critic to be heard.
And I'm not really even a fan of his. I just love watching history happen in the ring, and Joe is the only man who's ever been as close as he is to Rocky's record.
valueuv was 48-0
He wouldn't beat Marciano's record just being 50-0-0. Marciano was the one and only champion at heavyweight. Calzaghe would at least have to unify first.

A Hopkins rematch would be too risky for Joe, just as a bout with Chad Dawson. I think Joe would pull off convincing wins over Abraham, Taylor,Pavlik, and Bute though. That would make him 50-0 right there.
He would beat Bute, Taylor, and Glen Johnson easily. With Bhop and Pavlik he would win. Abraham and Dawson he should stay away from. They will give Joe a hard time.
The Bute fight would be huge overseas, plus Bute had a fairly easy fight with Bika, while Joe struggled with him.
Taylor may be easy pickin's for Joe, but hey, it would help him prep for Chad, both he and Jermain are big, young, strong technical fighters.
Glen Johnson; I believe he'd make it tough for Joe.
Except rules are rules, and he wasn't.
And I doubt he would have been 50-0 when he fought Tarver either.
Did you discount the rematch from your calculations?
If Roy had won the first fight there would have been no rematch, so Roy would have been 49-0, therefore never beating Rocky's record.
Don't waste your time with Flawless, he is an ignorant bigot.
If Joe was black he would have proclaimed him the GOAT by now.
Roy Jones was 50 and 0 until he lost to Tarver, we all know he beat Montell Griffen

Froch is also a possibility. He was Calzaghe's WBC mandatory at 168 before he vacated. Could be a nice fight to go out on in Cardiff. Both British, both undefeated, there's a bit of needle between the two, and if Froch beats Pascal, it'll be two world champions fighting.
I was thinking of that fight as well, it would be a good homecoming fight.
The way I would like to see it go is:
The Bernard rematch in the UK
Lucian Bute would be enormous, therefore mandatory
Zsolt Erdei, undefeated WBO 175lbs champ
And the big one for 50 and 0 against Bad Chad Dawson (after Chad unifies the division against Hugo Garay & Adrian Diaconu, WBA & WBC strapholders)
I would like to see him do this and retire by age 39. He'd be an automatic ATG lock, and I'm not even a Calslappy fan. I'm a fan of the sport and I just feel it would be historic for boxing.
I don’t really care about undefeated records, Joe's biggest problem is that all the great fighters around his weight class are old and the young guys are just a bit to young at the moment. A lot of people criticize the Rock for fighting in a weak era so i doubt getting to 50-0 will stop people moaning at Calzaghe. I actually think he would get a lot more respect if he was to lose to one of these fighters and then come back and win in a rematch.
Joe's so close, and his chances are very good at accomplishing the 50-0 mark against meaningful opposition.
A fight with Lucian Bute - Huge in the UK or Canada
A fight with Jermain at 168lbs - Big, if Taylor can beat Lacy
A rematch with Hopkins in the UK - Erase the doubt
A fight with Dawson - Light Heavy Supremacy
A fight with AA - Huge Euro fight
A fight with Johnson - Dangerous
