He'd beat a young Hopkins. The modern version of Hopkins is better than the one Roy beat. He had a weird career and wasn't at his best when most people are in terms of age. I can't see him beating a fit for fighting 168 Toney, but then again I wouldn't be absolutely shocked if he did. That is a lean for Toney fight, but maybe. You never knew which James Toney you were getting anyway. Ruiz? No chance. Joe doesn't have the style to move way out of his weight class. Only slick boxers can do that.
Haha look at the polls, shows what people really think of Joe huh?
I think he is WAAAY overated, and doesnt deserve half the damn credit people give to him, especialy not for beating Jones Jr. at age 39,but in their prime, all of the posted fighters would have beaten Joe IMO.
Joe=Overated.
This is dumb... Hopkins gave Calz the hardest fight of his life... a prime hopkins beats calzaghe.
No, you're dumb because you're incapable of anything other than black and white analysis. All you see is that an old Hopkins gave Calzaghe a hard fight and you jump to a conclusion. The question asks you whether Calzaghe could beat the same Hopkins that Jones beat (a very green Hopkins), not whether he could beat a prime version. Hopkins wasn't close to being in his prime when he fought Roy Jones Jr.
Edit. Didn't read question properly.
Not sure at all to be honest. I'd favour a young Jones and Toney over him. A young Bhop would bhe interesting and Ruiz...no idea.
Ruiz? No, Joe's not a heavyweight and rightfully so.
Hopkins AND Toney....don't crucify me for this but I think so. Both guys have never really been movers and that's exactly how Roy beat them. WITH MOVEMENT.
I don't think he had a chance in hell at prime vs prime with Roy Jones though.
So could he?
This is dumb... Hopkins gave Calz the hardest fight of his life... a prime hopkins beats calzaghe.
Before we start asking if Calz can beat Toney, let's see Calz fight at HW... then you can start asking that question. until then prime Toney > Calz.
Not Ruiz. He didnt have the style and would've had to work too hard to put on the weight. Roy Jones Jnr probably wishes that he'd never beat Ruiz either, cos it ruined the rest of his career. Still, he'll always have that.
The Hopkins that Roy fought wasn't particularly special. The current 43 year old Hopkins would beat his younger self. While he was naturally more athletic at that younger age, he lacked the ring generalship and counter punching ability people associate with Bernard Hopkins.
James Toney would have been a tough fight and I don't know who would have won, but I have always considered James Toney to be one of the more overrated fighters of his generation. He was superb technically and I have a great deal of respect for his multi-division pursuits, but he never seemed to have it against other great fighters.
Calzaghe couldn't have ever fought at heavyweight, as it would have meant bodybuilding - something he has never done.
That version of Toney and Hopkins? Probably. When they are at their peaks, it's different. Not taking anything away from Roy of course. I know the Jones fans are on edge.
Hop and Toney, yes, Ruiz, no. Jones was in and out with Ruiz.
Joe doesn't fight that way. He'd get mauled.
Unless Nady was the ref. Then he might have a chance as did Roy.
I have always picked a prime Toney over a prime Joe and I will continue to do so. Joe would not beat Ruiz either. Dunno about the Hopkins that Roy fought.
