If he wins his overall resume will now look pretty impressive.
James Toney - When Tony was undefeated and in his prime and at the time a top 3 pound for pound fighter.
Bernard Hopkins - One of the best Middleweights of all time. Probably top 3
Joe Calzaghe - Top 3 pound for pound at the time Roy beat him and was undefeated at 45-0.
Montell Griffin - Beat James Toney (twice) and was undefeated at the time Roy knocked him out.
John Ruiz - Not a big name or a great heavyweight, but still he's still a heavyweight and was champ at the time. Ruiz was coming off beating Holyfield and Roy went from 160 all the way to heavyweight.
Virgil Hill - Knocked him out with a body shot
Not a bad resume there. But 1st Roy needs to beat Calzaghe
The version of B-Hop RJJ faced would have lost to Thomas Hearns/SRL
I give RJJ credit for the win against B-Hop and James Toney but ask yourself...Is that the James Toney your used to seeing? I mean before that fight
1993 Hopkns had been coming off like 20 straight victories so it wasnt like he was completely raw as a fighter. I actually think he was great then also just Roy had such freakish quickness and athletic ability. Hopkins was a great defensive fighter back then also.
Also the 1987 version of SRL is no where close to SRL of 1978-1982 when he was active, sharp and his conditioning was at its best. No Layoffs.
Im not sure how 1987 SRL would have done against a active young fighter like a Hopkins. Remember Hagler had slowed down a lot by 1987. I dont know if those flurries would work against a young B-Hop who would counter when Ray combos. Hagler of 87 was to slow and not the same Hagler of the early to mid 80's. Ray was wide open when he was throwing those flurries. A active young fighter would counter him when he did that.
Now 1978-1982 SRL is a different story. Thats the Ray Leonard i grew up idolizing.
I think he wasted too many years fighting bums. He clearly had the potential. Had he succeeded, undefeated with a resume equal to Oscar's then maybe yes.
That would be pretty much impossible unless your name is Floyd Mayweather Jr. :) Now seriously i think Jones has a impressive resume as it is. Even if he loses he will still be greater than Joe obviously (did not beat Toney when he was 40 and shot, but in his prime and Toney remains to this day a better and more accomplished fighter than Zaghes.

look... bottom line, rjj is going to lose... he's shot... he should've made this fight in his prime...
the best that rjj can do is make calzaghe look like shit and not get KTFO. that's all we can ask of rjj in 2008.
if the fight stinks enough, maybe calzaghe will stick around for a fight w/ Dawson.
No way! He fought waaay too many sanitation workers and police officers to be considered all time great. His best wins were against: (1) A green and inexpereinced Hopkins (2) A severely weight drained Tony. He was a walkiing corpse that night. (3) The worst heavyweight title holder in HW history (Ruiz)
He never stepped up his level of competiton in his prime and when he did he was exposed by Tarver and Johnson. Hell, he couldn't even ko a 2 year retired former welterweight Trinidad.
its easy to discredit anyones resume, no matter how many names they beat.

Ok lets break it down. Lets assume now Roy beats Calzaghe. I grew up in the Hagler era and im not trying to knock him but if Roy beats Calzaghe his resume is better.
Lets look at there 3 big victories in there careers
1. Hagler's biggest victories - Hamsho, Duran, Hearns, Mugabi. Im going by his 3 biggest wins. Now Duran was really a blown up middleweight in 1983 and wasnt even close to his prime. Hearns had also moved up in weight. He was in his prime, but Hagler was still the natural 160 pounder. He's supposed to beat these two because he's the natural middleweight and both are moving up in weight.
2 Roy Jones - James Toney in his prime beat Mike McCallum (twice) dominated Iran Barkley and knocked out prime young Michael Nunn. Roy dominated James Toney. Bernard Hopkins is one of the top 3 middleweights of all time and Calzaghe has ruled the 168 pound division for 10 + years.
Duran of 1983 is past his prime and not even a natural middleweight and Hearns was moving up in weight also. I think sometimes ppl just automatically favor older eras. Hagler's biggest wins came against fighters that moved up in weight.
Like some said, you can make a argument Roy is already top 10, but adding Calzaghe to that resume makes that argument that much better.
in overall dominance in his career and skill he is already top 10. To come back off the 3 back to back losses. 2 by brutal KO. to come back at 39 years old. turns 40 in January. to defeat an undefeated top of his game Joe calzaghe, rated in top 3 Pound for pound! If Roy wins this fight convincingly at this stage of his career, he enters top 5 in my book. top 3 if he stops joe.
Ok lets look at a guy like Marvin Hagler. Would you consider him top 10 all time or maybe top 15?
If Roy beats Calzaghe his resume is better than Hagler's. I think prime James Toney and Hopkins both beat 1995 Hearns and Duran of 1983.

Toney and Hopkins are both better technical fighters than Tommy know how to make adjustments, slip and counter better than 1985 Hearns. Tommy's come out strong attack would not work against either because both are great at slipping punches and taking away your best punch. They also take a better punch.
