The Ring magazine had an article on him not too long ago. He was up in Albany, NY doing his rehab duties and while there he was trainining some fighters in a Albany gym also. Hes doing very well. He even brought his son out to some fights in Saratoga, NY.
Kevin Rooney is so overrated as a trainer it ain't even funny. Who was Kevin Rooney before and after Tyson.
Before Tyson, he was a boxer.
After, a drunk...from what I hear.
That kind of messes you up and stalls your career.
Then you have to look at his location: Catskill, NY instead of the City.
How good is he, I don't know, but you cannot go by who and how many fighters someone trains. For example: Dundee may be overrated as a trainer. Ali said Dundee was a great "Coach." Ali and Leonard were naturally brilliant fighters already by the time they went to Dundee. Also, Tyson whooped many asses that Dundee was in the corner for.
Tyson had natural power, speed, and strength, but his skills were developed from the ground up in Catskill under Atlas and then Rooney...with D'Amato serving as the Teacher.
Tyson also got better under Rooney, which you can see from his amatuer days to his first fight, all the way up to Spinks....Mike kept on getting better.
But how good was Rooney, I don't know. He was right for Mike, that's all I know.
He also trained Vinny Pazienza for a bit.
Great interview with Kevin Rooney...posted on boxingscene a while back

I've always wondered this.he was a really good trainer.it's amazing how tyson fired him and lost right after that.
He didn't lose right after that, but his skills eroded, which happens when you don't train properly. He also didn't have anyone to advise him on strategy, before and during the fight.
The Bruno fight was really the first indication that Mike was on the decline. Mentally however, Tyson was having trouble even while he was with Rooney. Mike said that he couldn't appreciate the Spinks fight because....
His done a few films as well rooney has...
shame he hasnt had another world class fighter under his wing

I heard it was because he won't leave Catskill even though his family has urged him to go to the City. Not sure what's up now.
I've always thought the solution would be to have two gyms: one in the city and the one in Catskill.
The last time I saw him, he was a cornerman for Lenord Pierre, a fighter who got KO'ed by Kelly Pavlik in VERSUS. Last time I actually saw him train somebody.
