Here is the list, and I'll go through each reason individually.
1. Footwork
2. Size
3. Intangibles
4. Speed
5. Accuracy
1) Footwork. After reviewing the first fight, I understand why Donaire was able to take advantage of the footwork. Darchinyan comes forward very flat-footed, slowly and Donaire was able to change the distance whenever Darchinyan threatened to make a move. He can feint, get Darchinyan off balance and then attack. Darchinyan was not able to get a measure of Donaire in the fight at all.
Against Kirilov, there was no movement, just walking straight back and forth and getting hit with impunity. Kirilov fought the perfect fight to get the living daylights beaten out of him by Darchinyan.
2) Size. Donaire was much bigger than Darchinyan and the increase in weight to 115 pounds will reflect that. Add that to the list of technical disadvantages and Darchinyan is in a hole already. Darchinyan is noted for his power and against Donaire, he has a disadvantage.
3) Intangibles. The first fight can only bring Donaire confidence and Darchinyan a lack thereof.
4) Speed. And this goes back to the footwork. Donaire is on his toes, can move around. Darchinyan has pick his feet up and plod into range and by the time he's in range there's a jab, a right hand and a hook waiting to greet him.
5) Accuracy. Donaire has better snap and throws straighter punches. With the distance and range changing with every half-step and feint of Darchinyan, he doesn't know where to throw and his wider shots will not reach Donaire as often as Donaire's will reach him.
My theory is that Vic Darchinyan is ill-equipped to beat Nonito Donaire.
Thoughts and Comments?
Well, some feel he would beat Donaire in a rematch but I feel differently. I thought I'd outline it and if someone has a refutation, I'd engage them in a debate.
I agree about Darchinyan losing tonight, the same kind of one-sided action we saw in the Arce fight will ensue because of the technical flaws. Darchinyan is the kind of fighter who gets a lot of things afforded his way because of his popularity, similar to Arce, but against styles like Donaire and Mijares, he will always come up short. Darchinyan is too predictable and inaccurate, he will have a lot of trouble landing on Mijares, maybe moreso than he did against Donaire.
** Looks more like you will predictably come up short rather than Vic "always" coming up short.
Might have wanted to read Graham Houston's analysis of this fight. He understood perfectly the style match up and had no problem making Mijares the favorite, and just as little problem picking Darchinyan to beat him.
I use Houston as he's well respected and tends to follow the same lines of logic and analysis that I use, so it's telling the few times I may disagree with him.
The best fighter can always have an off day, and most assuredly the best fighter is never guaranteed a win, even on his best day in a sport where one punch changes everything. See the Big John Tate/Weaver title bout to verify.
Like Poppy against Pavlik, Vic had to have his best fight ever to whip Mijares who was taken out of his game early when he was flattened in the 1st round. Vic is one of the most awkwardly dangerous pressure type fighters I've ever seen who is dismissed by the usual fanboy type writers that pick Mijares to win because they don't understand that it ain't just a skills contest. We could hold a beauty contest before the fight and Mijares wins hands down and you do like the purty ones don't ya?
In the ring come fight night, it's about who can really fight and who's timing is gonna be better, and who can adjust best, and unfortunately, who gets the breaks from the refs and judges, ie politics.
So, kid, glad you got your Fillipino heroes to boost your self esteem, but you still gots a lot to learn about boxing, though you may be at your peak as a fanboy....:beerchug:
Hey AsianSensation,
You opened the floor for discussion. I want to hear you comments on tonights fight. What do you think since you were so sure Vic wouldnt be able to win tonight...?
I had a feeling you were 100% right before tonight, and now I'm not 100% sure.
The only thing I think I can help myself convince myself that Donaire wins again is that Darchinyan seemed a lot more open to left hooks when he came in than he did against straight lefts or right hooks.
Perhaps Darchinyan is bad against orthodox fighters?
darcy had it easy against the midgetano kirilov.
but a possible intangible will be if darchinyan does what he says against mijares. he'says we're going to see a new fighter in him. i think he means he's goxing to try to actually box and use defense.
but when has a boxer said that and actually followed thru?
gatti comes to mind.
I was impressed against Kirilov, but Kirilov didn't do himself any favors by not knowing which way to circle a southpaw. Kirilov also was coming off of a bad showing in a draw during the previous fight.
If Darchinyan finds a way to beat Mijares, which I don't think will happen, then everything changes. I personally don't think Darchinyan can fight a conventional fight but who knows, right?
Nah its cool, no problem... personally i really think donaire has Darchys number.. but i do think he deserves a rematch. That fight wont happen though cuase darchy wont make it past Mijares tonight. I would really like to see Donaire/Arce.. Arce would put alot of pressure on donaire and he has some serious balls and he can take a shot. Donaire would probably win but it would be fun to watch.
Donaire-Arce will be a star-making performance for one reason: It will be shown on American TV. Not many people got to see Mijares taking Arce to school because it was a smaller PPV show. But I think it will be an entertaining fight as long as it lasts.
I do believe Darchinyan wants a rematch and kudos to him, but I doubt it'll happen because his people know the score.
No disrespect at all, I was just opening up the floor to discussion and debate so we could come to agreement on this subject. You made a statement and I just wanted to give my take on the points you made.
No harm, no foul.

Uhhh alright then.. i was just stating my opinion.. but OK Donaire is the shit....

You could also say that Fernando Montiel and Vic Darchinyan fought a "very small" Luis Maldonado as well. Those three fighters represent the only losses on Maldonado's record.
Montiel's knockout of Maldonado came on the heels of a very bad beating suffered at the hands of Donaire at a higher weight than Maldonado is used to fighting at.
I'm not sure what Darchinyan was looking past Donaire at, since there was no significant talk of a major fight after Donaire.
If that was his rendition of an off-night, then that was some off night he had. That was like a Jeff Lacy off-night, or a Don Imus off-night.

Im not sold on donaire yet... (im not hating on him either). I just need to see more of him. He beat darchinyan but I think Darchy was lookin past him and maybe had a bad night you never know. Then he fought a very small Maldanado that was kinda shot. He gave Nonito just a lil test for 8 rounds(wich Montiel finished him in 3) I just need to see more of him agianst experienced better fighters. Im looking foward to seeing him tonight.

Hey AsianSensation,
Never underestimate the heart of a champion. Vic has better stamina and can throw his power punches for 12 rounds nonstop.
Can you argue with that?
I cannot argue that a guy can or cannot throw punches nonstop. A boxer can throw 100 punches a round and be effective but it's the manner in which they are thrown that is of consequence. Darchinyan kept a fast pace in the first fight and that afforded Donaire lots of countering opportunities.
If you throw punches and can't avoid the counters in return, throwing lots of punches is a detriment. Especially if you can't land or get in punching range quick enough.

a rematch would play out exactly the same way. vic is not match for nonito's skills. i dont think many people will try and promote this match-up after the embarrassing beating mijares is going to hand vic.
then, mijares can go on to fight donaire or montiel in an actual, important matchup, while arce and darcinyan can make some big bucks fighting each other in an entertaining clash of exciting, agressive styles. hopefully they can make a trilogy out of that if it is competitive....
Top Rank is looking to cash out on Arce and feed him to Donaire, which is a complete mismatch in itself. Arce hasn't been nearly as dominant since moving up from 108, where he held a ridiculous size advantage over his opposition.
If Darchinyan is neutralized in this fight with Mijares, his marketability will drop considerably. He will most likely be relegated to safety fights IMO.
THE ONLY ADVANTAGE DONAIRE HAS. Everything else, if they meet again, TRUST ME Vic will prepare for and he's itching to get his revenge. ITCHING!!!!
skills,speed,power,tactics etch.......

You gave me nothing to debate. You essentially told me that you like Darchinyan very much and WAR DARCHINYAN!
Why do you feel Darchinyan wasn't able to land on Donaire but Donaire was able to land on Darchinyan, because of size?
