I've seen some footage of Sugar Ray Robinson and to be honest, I'm not impressed. I don't see how people could claim again and again that he is the most talented fighter to EVER lace them up. I just dont see it.
I'm not calling him a bum nor have I seen all of his fights but someone asnwer me this........ who did he beat?
I mean really, was competition that stiff back then that you can legitimately claim that he was infact, the GREATEST of all time?
Again, I'm not calling him a bum but I am not going to go with the flow when I feel otherwise.
Someone please enlighten me.
skillwise, he isn't, although he was ahead of his time, i fell fighters like floyd mayweather jr, ali, pernell whitaker, and floyd paterson to name a few all had better skills than him, especially ali and mayweather jr. resume wise, he is the greatest ever imo, no doubt. he was a speciall fighter in his time and had a heart of a lion, no doubt. he fought everybody. skillwise, he wasn't the greatest but very good.
What you're referring to may be defensive prowess and the willingness to be occasionally dull but one has to recall...being boring in Robinson's time meant no ticket sales and no money. Don't confuse skill with getting hit back. Add to that epic hand speed, two fisted power and being tougher to hit than it looks like and there's the total package. I mean, he was beating Zivic and LaMotta at a time when most of today's fighters are having their tenth pro fight. He lost one fight officially in his first close to 140 and while there are a lot of stiffs there, there's also World champions and former champs all over the place. The craziest thing? His best work at 147 is largely lost to paper as no film exists of fights like Zivic or Gavilan.
When people who know a hell of a lot more than me about the sport saying he is the greatest, and I have almost no experience seeing the guy, it would be pretty ignorant to annoint someone else as the greatest of all time without the complete information of the situation, wouldn't it?
See the problem here is your perspective is an intelligent, curious and humble one. Average people like to just state an opinion and defend it to people more knowledgeable than themselves.
I doubt most ppl have seen 40 of his fights but still jump on the "He's the greatest" bandwagon. Be your own man.
When 19 out of 20 boxing experts and writers consider him the GOAT, there is a reason for it. "Be your own man", thats just insulting, bro. If you have someone besides Robinson as your GOAT so be it. A good deal of those people are only in that group to argue or seem different, rather actually being educated and opinionated on the matter.

Ali and Patterson most certainly did not have better skills than Robinson did.

can you admit that he might be the most successful boxer ever?
he might - that's quite possible
i just think he reaped the benefits of being around in his era
did you know that all of the videotapes that fighters and fans can watch of SRR were all from during a point of SRR's career when he was past his prime. So everyone that marvels at his skill and athleticsm watched a past his prime SRR. The only footage we got from his Prime are still fotos. Now thats nuts.
i noticed that a couple of pages ago, it is pretty crazy.
Yeah man thats what Im saying. If you read my first post, it was clear I wasnt calling him a bum or anything of that nature. It's an honest fucking inquiry.

I said the same thing, seeing his stuff on ESPNClassic, but, remember... footage of him in his prime at his best weight class (WW) is just generally not around anymore.
You are saying him in a weight class that is bigger than he should be at, at an age where he is losing his speed and skills.
