I'm reading a biography on him, and he is known as saying that he never liked to fight. It was just a business to him. I'm sure a lot of you have heard this before, but what do you think? Possibly the greatest fighter of all time didn't even like it, haha. I just think it's kind of funny.
Look up him vs sammy angott george cliff tony freddie valentine andy nonnels and tony ancona Dykes, same obsolete tech and flaws as the older one that fought gene/jake/joey and others
Ray and this era look to be very overextending a lot of times to the body and are very hesitant in most movements. They don't fight from range much, they leave themselves open a lot of times, and a lot of times they will just throw to the body and not protect themselves. The Carlos era were able to protect the body with 1 hand while punching to the body. along with all the other advances in movement, along with being way smoother in movements the ray era They use mostly counters when up close. The lateral movement is very basic. They don't seem to be able to punch from range while doing it smoothly. They have to stop then punch most of the time. Their feet are mostly tiptoeing.
I'm sure he enjoyed it in some ways even if he said he didn't.
Robinson may have been the most driven champion ever, I don't think someone who only fought for money could've done what he did in boxing.
Now that doesn't necessarily mean that he ever liked the sport of boxing but rather what he got out of it, not only the money but the fame and the recognition of being a champion.
It may be that he lost a lot of his enthusiasm for the sport after the accidental death of Jimmy Doyle.
Sugar Ray Robinson was perhaps the original businessman/boxer, he didn't like boxing, he just did it for the money and he was notoriously hard to deal with at the negotiating table because of his demands.
You can watch the excellent documentary "Bright Lights, Dark Shadows" on Ray Robinson for his exact quote on it.
The interviewer commented that Ray seemed to enjoy his work, and Ray responded "No, I never enjoyed boxing. It's all a business to me". Ray's sister touched on it some more, saying he did it all for the money, to get their family out of poverty, etc...
Another ATG who said he didn't enjoy the sport was Michael Spinks. He wasn't even boxing after he won a medal in Montreal, but was fired from his custodial job when he fell asleep in the bathroom that he was supposed to clean.
He went back to boxing, became a great, and made millions.
Gary Lockett said the same the thing, I believe. Two all time greats, Lockett and SRR saying the same thing. Coincidence? You be the judge.....
You must spread some reputation

LMFAO. That is the funniest post I have ever read on here.
Yeah Robinson said boxing was barbaric!
I saw a BBC documentary on him.I saw him say that he didn't like boxing and that it was just a job to him.He also said that boxing to him was just like fighting in the gutter and passersby throwing pennies at you.
The many single punch knockdowns I saw him take? He could hit hard, ride a punch good or move out of the way quick, but when they did catch him he dropped like a sack of bricks. Maybe he simply was not used to getting hit hard :)
Well no.When he was knocked down and out it was an accumulation of punches. His chin was not the problem.
The systematic beatdown that Lewis was probably the worst I've seen in a heavyweight fight.
Here is a short clip. You barely beat me to it :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kD9Cf_dAVdg
I'm sure I saw it at least one more time. So he was old there, I can see that happening. I don't know, every time I saw him get knocked out, he took it like a bitch. At least in his prime fights, it was like he had no real experience with it and did not know what to do or how to react.
He was also knocked down against Holyfield.
Teddy Atlas who used to train Tyson and now hates him said that while Tyson had a great chin, he never knew how to deal with punishment.

I remember seeing him get dropped by 1 punch in several fights, I would have to search through them to find the occurrences. They weren't his old fights but not his earliest either. What he would do is be slipping to the side each time, sort of turning away, and get caught right square in the jaw with a sort of looping cross and drop right to the mat.
After that concussion from Evander I noticed Tyson not keeping his left hand back far enough to protect his jaw when turning down and to the side. Left him very open.
It was his fight against Lennox Lewis.

please name one fight he was dropped by one punch just one fight. you're ****in sick man spreading these lies like that. damn disgracee!!11one
It sounds like you think I mean knocked out, I said dropped. He did get back up. You need to smoke some pot and relax man.
I've seen every one of his fights man, I've seen him drop many times from one hard hit. People with good jaws usually have to be hit hard several times. So wtf man.
And how many Dempsey fights have you seen if you say he had no defense? Have you seen his earlier fights before he got older, slower, and started fighting upright a lot more? Like the first Gene Tunney fight for instance? He did not utilize his bobbing and weaving there very often or very well. Look at some of his earlier fights, just like Tyson or Prince Naseem Hamed he would slide right out of the way of tons of punches while moving around constantly and landing heavy left hooks and right crosses or hooks on demand.
Tyson had a very good chin. He usually took a ton of punishment before going down.
I agree Dempsey was very good at bobbing and weaving.
I've seen every one of his fights man. I study those style of fighters for hours every day because it is what I am learning. I've seen him drop many times from one hard hit. People with good jaws usually have to be hit hard several times. Not with several soft rabbit punches and a hard hit thrown in, but several hard punches. I've seen Pavlik take several hard punches and just get woozy. So wtf man.

How did Tyson have a weak jaw???
