I think you guys are overlooking the strength aspect of it just a bit.
Naturally it comes that conventional fighters need a good left jab, and southpaws a good right one.
But your less dominant hand is always significantly weaker than it's counterpart. You don't even have to be a fighter to realize this, my right hand is pretty damn solid, but my left couldn't break a balloon.
Building strength in that weak arm is a sure fire way to balance out your offensive firepower. And what good is a great jab, that has no power behind it?
I'm just looking at pictures of Khan, Floyd and Ali and they all bigger left arms then right.
Why is this?

If you're right handed you use your left hand more. And vice versa. It's all about using the jab to set up the opportunities with your power punching hand.
This is my guess at least.
It could also be because their left is so weak compared ot their right that they work on it a lot more, trying to build strength.
