Hatton Trainer Switch Under Fire-SportingLife
Former IBF light-welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi has questioned Ricky Hatton's decision to switch trainers ahead of their November 22 Las Vegas showdown.
Hatton dispensed with long-time trainer and mentor Billy Graham earlier this year in the wake of the first defeat of his professional career last December against Floyd Mayweather Jnr.
Hatton took his record to 44-1 in Manchester in May with a win over Juan Lazcano before splitting with Graham and replacing him with Floyd Mayweather Snr ahead of his fight with New Yorker Malignaggi (25-1, 5 KOs), who gave up his IBF title to face the Englishman rather than defend against a mandatory challenger.
The Italian-American, however, believes Hatton's decision will backfire on both boxer and trainer.
"Floyd Mayweather Snr is putting himself in a tough situation and putting a lot of pressure on Hatton," Malignaggi said from his Las Vegas training base.
"You can't teach dogs new tricks.
"He can teach him a few things in two months but Hatton doesn't have the talent, natural speed and defensive ability.
"Mayweather's been opening his mouth and when I beat Hatton, everybody is going to say he shouldn't have gotten rid of his trainer and blame Mayweather.
"When they lose it's going to cost Mayweather a lot of jobs."
Malignaggi continued the trash talking when he rounded on Hatton for reportedly looking head to a big payday against the winner of the Oscar De La Hoya-Manny Pacquiao fight on December 6 in Las Vegas.
"I'm focused on Ricky Hatton, not De La Hoya or Pacquiao," the American said.
"It's gong to be a very frustrating night for Ricky Hatton. He'll be catching a lot.
"I'll prove that Paulie Malignaggi is the number one 140-pounder in the world."
Eh? Cotto won a clear UD and smashed Paulie's face until it was unrecognizable. I became more of a fan of Paulie after that fight, but to say it was close or that Paulie would have won? Damn bro. Seems you are slightly deluded. No offense!
Paulie is NOWHERE NEAR Cotto's league.
yea dude you really should go watch that fight again paulie might have been f'd up but that was a damn close fight
paulie is going to box the hell out of hatton and win that mess UD for sure Hattons only chance is if Paulie lets him get inside on him but its gonna be a UD for Paulie guarntee it.
please tell me you are not talking about the cotto fight, Paulie would have won that shit if it wasnt for the KD in the earlier round even with that it was still a close fight

Paulie needs to be smart and jab him to death in his upper part of his stomach, like Floyd did in the ealier rounds, because ppl who have drinking habits are very delicate there! If he jabs him a lot in the first half of the fight, putting in the lead right every now and then, keep him at distance, and then when hes starting to look sloppy and bruised opens up a llittle putting in left hooks and combinations, he can win a UD. Hope hes focused enough to stick to something like that and dont get caught in Hattons game.

I like Paulie but I kinda wish he would shut the f up now, he's starting to get on my nerves because he's all mouth! He has beaten nobody of note, has 5 KO's on his record, and just surviving against the best opponents isn't enough to make anyone a superstar. And I think that's my problem with him -- he acts like a star, or seems desperate to be a star, yet has no real star qualities.

I can't stand Paulie ! I hope he gets KO'd maybe that'll shut him up ! I think Hatton will win this fight because he'll drag Paulie into a war just like Cotto did ! If Cotto couldn't KO him I don't think Hatton will and we know Paulie can't crack an egg ! I'm leaning towards Hatton ! But reality is this is an even fight if Paulie can box and avoid fighting on the inside and going toe to toe he can pull it off ! My hunch though he'' fight Hattons fight !!
Can't wait to see Paulies ribs break by the best body puncher in the world.
A time will come when Paulies on the ropes with Hatton on his chest delivering insane bodyblows. I can't wait.
The best body puncher in the world? Says who? Jose Luis Castillo? Did he call you from his rocking chair?
Hatton without recklessness is basically a sloppy version of Miguel Cotto, just not as good. Malignaggi UD. Skills pay the bills in there. Not power. Looks at Hopkins-Pavlik
i have been saying for a while that i dont really see the hatton/mayweather sr combination really resulting in a major difference for hatton at this point in his career when he's been so used to and succesfull fighting his rugged tough style. hatton will attempt the new stuff may tries to teach him but when he gets into trouble we all know he will revert to what he has done all his boxing life

This is an easy fight for Hatton.

Yeah i dont think the mayweather hatton combo will work either. I think Paulie might just box hatton's socks off. But then again Hatton might puton the right pressure to beat Malignaggi. I think this is an interesting fight.
