this argument came up during one of the Kimbo bashing threads, when talking about Boxers who tried MMA or kick boxers that tried boxing, or MMA fighters that did Boxing.
names brought up were Patrick Cote .. who's 0-4 as a boxer. Keith Jardine who went 3-0 as a boxer, and Anderson Silva who went 1-1 as a boxer.
I brought up Marcus Davis who went 17-1-2 as a boxer, before going into MMA where he has a current record of 19-5
and there's KJ Noons who does both MMA + boxing and has a record of 7-2 MMA and 7-1 in boxing .. next fight November 13th.
so how current fighters do both, or more then just one of the above disciplines.
off the top of my head the only fighters I know who did MMA, boxing and kick boxing are Butterbean, and Jerome LeBanner a current kick boxer, 4-0 boxing record, last fight was in 1998 MMA record of 3-1, last MMA fight was in 2006
so how many fighters have done all 3? and how many fighters actively do more then 1 sport?
It's not knees or leg kicks or what k1 allows. It's skill. K1 is worlds better at kickboxing at an elite level than Anderson is. Period.
yeah your probably right, as I don't see an Elite full time K-1 Kick boxer losing to Anderson Silva ... although Silva might take Hong Man Choi .. if he doesn't get caught Anderson Silva's got a punchers/kickers chance at best vs any elite K-1 fighter
much like blackirish's example of a boxer in MMA .. same case goes for the above.
it's not his sport and the chance of winning is very very little.
You get the idea. None of these guys HAVE to be elite at anything. And they aren't. And that's okay. It's a different sport. More than the sum of one or two parts.
o yeah it's called Mixed Martial Arts for a reason. which going back to what you said, and the name itself .. MMA .. it's a blending of combative sports in not just stand up, but the ground game, etc
yeah I know there all diff sports and im not trying to compare them to each other
Im just tired of reading the same boring crap about "MMA taking over" "boxing declining because too many greedy promoters/PPV prices"
It would be more interesting to read about Fighters who competed in 1 or more of the Combat sports
rather then mindlessly throw MMA + Boxing together and write about them ... as it's been done two many times to count.
Mark Hunt is a kickboxing champion and a decent mma fighter...he had some pretty good wins, mostly his ones over CroCop and Silva. he almost submitted Fedor too, but that was just a wtf moment.
he went 1-1 in boxing. no, not one loss, one win...one loss, one draw.
a top level boxer going into mma is a complete waste of talent. all thats gonna happen is that either 1. hes going to easy outclass his opponent in the standup or 2. get completely outclassed when someone takes him down.
both scenarios suck because theyre both mismatches, and a waste of talent. stick to boxing, where you can actually use all that boxing ability, and against skilled standup opponents.
good point, Silva's striking is obviously word class
howver I've seen his boxing clip and his overall boxing ability leaves much to be desired, IMO
**I think it would make a great article if a Writer could get detailed info
of Boxers who tried MMA ... Mixed Martial Artists who've done boxing
or the rare ones that do both ... such as KJ Noons and I believe Arlovski still wants to Box pro.
it would make a much more interesting article oppose to seeing the same old MMA is taking over articles/boxing dying articles, which seem to appear bi monthly.
I think there is a couple of guys who can be good at 2 sports.
I would say anderson silva is the triple threat though he could be good at boxing, he is great at mma, and he is good at kickboxing.
has he ever kick boxed profesionally? if so what's his record?
