The problem is that everyone is always looking for that. There is no "next big thing."
Gamboa is fine for what he is: a defected Cuban who got to the pro game too late; an exciting guy who hangs his chin out and can't take what he gives.
Gamboa got hit with just about the biggest WTF you could get hit with. Thanks to digital camera's, and all.
Came back, and SMASHED.
Whats not to like about him?
Mosley never had the head movement Gamboa does, and he never had the foot work or lateral movement that Gamboa does.
again, gamboas head movemet sucks when he is looking to punch...otherwise he wouldnt have gotten caught by 2 clean punches and an elbow on his way inside....mosleys was better especially if you combine it with his subtle upper body movement and leg foundation that allowed him to twist his way to punching range without getting hit.....and mosley had better footwork......
Mosley was more accurate though.
I'll give you that, Mosley is more accurate. He punches straighter, and his combinations are more educated, but what are you expecting? Mosley is the most fluid combination puncher of the last 20 years.

Yeah I understand what your saying, but in sports everybody is looking for that all the time. Im not thinking that he will be, but I hope he has a sucessful career and has some good fights along the way. If he becomes a huge star so be it, if he doesn't so be it.
His recklessness I think at some point will cost him, but so far he's taken it and dished out even more.
"Out on his feet" was just an exaggeration. That left hook stunned him in a way and dictated what happened for the following five or six seconds that resulted in the knockdown.
I disagree, had no effect on him at all, it just looked like he did because he was stepping him and his foot was off the ground.
LOL, great observation. People do seem hyper-critical just so they can be the ones who called it first..
It's a tradition here and a game we play. It doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the fights. When the fight is on you watch the fight. When it's over you log onto boxingscene and make up some bullshit.
mosley had more of all those things.....
again im not sayiing gamboa is bad or anything hell probably win a title....but sooner or later, he is getting KO'ed with that huge head not tucked in...not because of a horrible chin, but he will get caught...end of....
and im probably being alittle hard on him for the elbow bullshit...that "elbow" (which was moree like the part above the elbow) wasnt that hard of a hit...the punch that followed was waaay harder-cleaner...
Mosley never had the head movement Gamboa does, and he never had the foot work or lateral movement that Gamboa does.
Gamboa again showed his weaknesses, but the man's gifted athletically and comes with straight agression. Im still wondering how he will do against the top flight guys. He seemed to try to keep his hands up, but after he was dropped by that elbow he seemed to say **** it and got back to his old style and well it worked. Is he the next big thing in boxing, that jury is still out, but he's got talent and is exciting to watch.

Great reflexes, good movement, huge power? Come on, Hype man.. I know you're mad at me but lets be reasonable. :D

Kayjay, you know I love you, but just no. I don't know what you have against Gamboa. Maybe you just have something against Cubans in general, I don't know, but making stuff up does not do justice to your intelligence.
You are smarter than that. You could see as well as I could that Gamboa was not hurt, much less out on his feet.

Ok sorry guys but Gamboa is the real deal. Hes a star.
And lets be fair, he got hit with an elbow.
Hes not going to be beating Linares, Lopez anytime soon but he can definitely fight. The problem with Gamboa is he has an amatuer style. But I noticed alot more focus to the body and not a large reliance on head shots. Hes definitely improving.
bullshit......he has decent enough head movement when thinking hes gotta move it.....when he is thinkin punching, his head is as stiff as my cock while wanking to lisa ann...
You are wrong. I obviously I was exaggerating a bit. His head movement is not as good as Ivan Calderon.
That is besides the point. People are trying to paint him as an unskilled brawler who's only assets are hand speed and punching power.
That is not true. Gamboa is on of the craftiest young fighters in the game. Hiis style is based on subtlety. When he is throwing, he moves his head just enough to turn your punch into a glancing blow. He turns his head just enough to make your hook miss, he steps to the side just enough to make you reach.
Most of the people denigrating Gamboa are people that have never laced up a pair of gloves. The people praising him, like myself, are people that have laced up the gloves. People that can see the subtleties of his style, the brilliance of his defence, the way he uses his legs and creates angles, and steps around fights. He is what Bert Sugar is talking about when he talks about old school fighters where all you can hit is their ears.
Watch any of his fights in slow motion, he gets hit much much less than it looks like at normal speed.
clearly.....cus thats all gamboas got......
Great reflexes, good movement, huge power? Come on, Hype man.. I know you're mad at me but lets be reasonable. :D
You are wrong. Every time Gamboa has looked even remotely bad, it has been because he is trying to please his trainers.
Gamboa is at his best fighting like Gamboa, they are ****ing with his style and I don't like it.
Gamboa has THE best legs in boxing, the best combinations in boxing, the best head movement in boxing, he needs a team that will help him work with what he has. Trying to change his style is not good for him.
Bottom line, Gamboa is the real deal.
However, I would like to see him move down in weight.
Gamboa already did move down in weight. He can't go any lower.
He was out on his feet from the left hook five seconds beforehand.

whats wrong with you guys? He may not be future p4p #1, but the guy is exciting as hell to watch, and hes probebly going to win a title. How can he not with that kind of speed and power?
and even if he gets khaned in the future, thats fine. itll be fun to watch.
yall need to learn to enjoy boxing on its own, not being 'right' about boxing.
Fair post. This thread is just anti-hype. If I never read that he would be the biggest star in boxing, I wouldn't have to write about how he won't.
With that in mind I should say "wow, that guy looks impressive."
Im sure you had that same feeling about Aaron Pryor right? Thats who Gamboa reminded me of tonight. The way he went down got back up, and was going back after him before the ref could jump in to give him a count.
Uhhhh I did see Pryor on TV, but that's because I'm an old man. Thirty years ago I was not handicapping prospects
A few facts:
Gamboa is 27, by the way. That's not young for a 126 lber.
Martinez hadn't fought outside Kansas City since he did that tour of Iowa a few years back
26.
And he still stopped him. Going down is going down. Ok. But he came back with an emphatic stoppage. That shows star potential.
