In boxings golden age when i might add there was probably much more influnce by the MOB and the gamblers HW Chamop ment something. Every kid growing up wanted to become Champ. Rocky Marciano was god. Muhammad Ali wasn't only a HW Champ and the Greatest but he was and still is an Icon. Kids everywhere watched fights with their fathers or listened to them on the radio. What happened? How does the sport regain some of that golden era and feeling again?.......Explain why you think it was and can still be that way or why it was and will never be again......Lefty
yeah fighters fighting 3 times a year would be appreciated Im all for that
as Berto just finished up on his 3rd fight of the year vs Forbes
and Pavlik will have his 3rd fight this year vs Hopkins.
plus fighting 3 times a year if possible also get's the fighters name out there ... oppose to having 7-8 months of inactivity.
and I'll kinda agree with mrpain that it really seems that boxing almost has "came back to life" and experienced a Renaissance so to speak
i just hope it doesn't all go to shit with the DLH-Pac fight .. and the potential DLH-Hatton fight
as both fights are in danger of hurting the image of boxing (depending on how they turn out)
sure this maybe true
"surrounded by nothing but controversy(Bad Decisions, the bite,Don King)"
but I would also have to think that a bad big fight could also hurt the sport just as badly, if not worse.
"Fighters fighting more. If you're a fan of a fighter you may only see him fight twice a year, sometimes once. Its very annoying."
question, how often do you suggest that fighters fight per year then?
as I believe a similar suggestion came up before, but the poster wanted fighters to fight every 2-3 months
and I don't think that's at all very realistic
**big difference between prospects who fight 5-6 time a year and go up vs Tomato cans compared to fighters at the Elite level.
It would depend on how the fight went. Cotto and Margarito can certainly rest for months at least and that would be alright (by today's standards), but if a fighter wins by a 1st round knockout without much resistance from the opponent he should not be out of the ring for months. Berto and Williams for example. Williams wants to fight Berto in November and that should be very possible, assuming of course that Berto felt he could step up to that level. Williams says he wants to do it and I think thats great. As far as time is concerned though, that could've been enough time.
The simplest solution would be to the ring girls enter the ring butt naked and the two boxers fight for her and the winner gets to take her home that would make los of people watch boxing.
they could also ban clinches and also stopping/boring tactics so people dont get bored.
Network Television and Media coverage
Boxing used to be on the cover of SI all the time back in the day, they used to talk about the fights on every sports show. The last decade the media stopped covering boxing since it became surrounded by nothing but controversy(Bad Decisions, the bite,Don King)
I think boxing has had a renaissance the last 2 years, a shitload of big fights are being made and even ESPN has stepped up it's boxing coverage a bit. Lets not forget that ESPN Classic has boxing every night of the week now(Back in the day it was 1 or 2 times a week) Youtube no doubt helping the sport grow.
Back in the day you had to buy the fights and they never rebroadcast them, now you can find pretty much any fight you want online or watch them on ESPN Classic,Versus Classics,Showtime2. I think HBO should make an all sports channel and show fights and boxing documentarys.

I say three times a year at best. If a fighter goes through a war like Cotto and take made punishment he will need more time to heal. A guy Like Williams who had two first round KO's in a row should have no problem getting back in the ring in 6-8 weeks after a fight like that....The problem is with all these big promotions and money making deals the ink takes longer then the actal fight....Lefty
Name me countries where boxing is bigger than America.
Most latin countries Mexico, PR to name two easily UK Germany..I would say Russia right now..Probably themost money to bge made in america but the fans aremore crazy about the average bout and boxer in most of those countries...Lefty

Less belts; One, or two champions max for each division.

Make the best fights available.
Fights aired on basic channels such as ABC and NBC. Much less PPV.
More American stars (like it or not, its true).
Theres even more I could say.
It's all about assessabilty and availibility.
I agree with that, that if boxing was on basic cable, more people would be able to see the fights (vs being on Premium cable or PPV)
and the #'s for boxing would at least have a chance.
but consider 1 thing, and it's hypothetical so work with me here.
**I don't think as many people would/will watch boxing as you think do.
because sure the team sports (particularly base, foot and basketball take up a large chunk of the Sports market on regular cable)
but there are team sports even that don't do too well on TV, such as Hockey and Soccer for example.
so maybe boxing just has trouble catching on with the casual fan?
(of course this came up already but I'd like your take)
focus on creating New legends. New heroes.
I agree with the last point, sure there were great fighters, but I'd like to see out of the current batch who can do great things.
By getting more kids to box, like a school boxing team or something
I can tell you that ain't going to happen. If the High school system is using Title 9 to squeeze money out of High school Wrestling, you ain't gonna make a dent with boxing.
It's all about assessabilty and availibility.
Be more assessable to fans, be more availble PPV to everyone, you'll see more of a turn out.
You also need to shrug your past off. anybody from the old guard who doesn't want to help in a progressive manner and isn't thinking about letting people fight and helping the sport at the same time, should be thrown on their asses.
Yes, Ali was great. Ali was awesome and many respect him, but that was in the past and you need all focus on the NOW. Fights should not be compared to older fights due to lots of changes. Stop comparisons and focus on creating New legends. New heroes.
Less PPV's and more boxing on free to view tv
Edit: less PPV's for America the UK don't have that many, but more boxing on free tv will help in any country
That is because UK fans will fly across the Atlantic to watch Hatton or Super Joe.....They have boxing as a house hold sport in the UK along with soccer....Over here only the star come out for the big fights...the casual fan doesnt go to any of the big fights so they sell PPV events. When was the last time you saw a packed stadium Hatton packs them in all the time every fight....Lefty

it needs a boxing show on regular tv like how ufc does on syndicated channels.
- stop hyped up fighters like khan, lacy etc being considerd as the next great thing
those are the type of fighters that generate alot of casual interest in boxing though... maybe they should just hype up the right fighters instead
Like a Judah Clottey or Moselt Mayorga right? I could see those going head liners on CBS Golden Boy where are you are you listening get Boxing back to main stream fo rthe fans for god sakes...Lefty
Thats a good example. But it's more relevant towards younger up-and coming fighters. ...BAT

- get fighters to fight more often
- stop hyped up fighters like khan, lacy etc being considerd as the next great thing
- santioning bodies to all pick one person to represent each of them lock them all in a ring and force them all to have a free for all - last man standing is the winner and the sanctioing body he represents is considered legit and all others to be discarded. lolno just kidding but something needs to be done about the sanctioing bodies.
- stop fighters from ducking other fighters like chad dawson should have a rematch with johnson.
- we need a new heavyweight champ!!
I agree with these two statements here. I also suggest putting the Super HW back in place. there is no reason why a HW like Barret should be forced to fight a 7 foot 300+ pound man. these guys are too big and too slow to fight and be entertaining. If you can make it in under 235 you are a super HW.
The sanctioning bodies definetly have alot to do with things being so screwed up. There has to be better rankings system and fine you 4 belts leave it at 4. No more NABF or Intercontent belts blah blah blah....When some one vacats a belt what happened to a 4 man tourney for god sakes? I wouldn't mind seeing more fo the unifacation matches either we got 4 top WW right now why not have a unifacation tourney?...Lefty
I'm taking about fights just a notch or 2 below the PPV's. If those fighters got some mainstream exposure it could bode well for the future of our sport....BAT

With the crzae over MMA and the fake soap oprea WWE and all the blood and guts in the movies. You have same sex relationships in reguliar TV shows nowadays and girls constantly taking there clothes off. i was watching house the other day and I see Cutty in House's dream pole dancing in a school girl outfit refealing pretty much everything she had. All this and they are worried about boxing? Come on gimme a break?......Lefty
I agree the Friday night fights and the Young and up and coming prospects some 4 rounders and maybe ocassionaly a Championship Match gosh as we have pointed out so frequently there are plenty of those to go around...Lefty
