The House of Reps, in a voice vote, recommended that Jack Johnson be pardoned for his 1913 Mann Act conviction - a racist embarrassment to America's history.
"He was a victim of the times and we need to set the record straight -- clear his name -- and recognize him for his groundbreaking contribution to the sport of boxing," said Rep Peter King, R-N.Y., author of the resolution.
The measure now goes to the Senate, where Republican presidential nominee John McCain, a senator from Arizona, has a companion resolution.
did House republicans push this through so that McCain could do his thing in the Senate - and pander to the boxing crowd? or pander to african-americans?
I'm just curious as to why they've decided to do this now.I mean Johnson's been dead for over sixty years now.
BTW has anybody seen the Robert Burns documentary on his life "Unforgivable Blackness". Best documentary ever made about boxing....
It is sad that they do this almost 100 years after it happened.
Free Michael Nunn!
Nunn would've pretty much gotten a slap on the wrist for what he did in Finland. In the U.S. he gets 25 years in prison.
