For anyone who failed to notice it in any of his last six fights, Roy Jones Jr is badly shot.
His fights with Amju, Hanshaw and Trinidad do not represent some sort of rennaisance. Roy did not look good in these fights, he looked bad, very bad.
That is all.
he looked great against a fat super welterweight who hasnt fought in 3 years and did nothing , just came for money
Calzaghe will beat Jones easy, its a shame because i like jones but he will get dominated
I wouldn't say he's shot but he is way past his prime, If he was shot he wouldn't be winning his last three fights no matter who they were. As for his fight against Calzaghe, Jones will have his moments with his fast accurate combos but he won't be able to maintain it throughout 12 rounds. Calzaghe will just outwork him to a UD.
Roy's punchresistance is long gone. I cannot see him match Joe's workrate either. All I hope for is a pretty good fight and perhaps Roy landing a few good shots.
I expect this fight to be much better than the Hopkins one though.
Roy winning? Naaah
They are both old, 37 and 39 would have been regarded as ancient for fighters not long ago. At this point though it is impossible to claim that Calzaghe is as old in relative terms as Roy, who looks a shadow of what he once was, whereas Calzaghe is at most showing signs of slipping a little more each fight. Its very hard to judge where Calzaghe is at right now because his last opponent was Hopkins, but its not justifiable to claim he has fallen as far as Roy. At worst its possible that Calzaghe might 'get old overnight' and look awful, but for that we'll have to wait and see.
And that's that. One is slipping, the other's a shadow.
You don't always count a "fighters age" by his age, more by his previous performances. To be fair a lot of guys decline after 34 etc.
The ONLY exception is when fighters get near or above 40. Ahem. 39 and 42/3 for example. You can safely just start calling them old at that point and be correct 90 percent of the time.
Yes, I know, which is why I make reference to their 'relative age' and state that in terms of slipping from former ability, Roy is by far the older of the two.
Based on Calzaghe's recent performances I judge he began the 'aging process' even before he fought Jeff Lacy, but has made up for it with boxing skill. Against Hopkins he did look a lot 'older' than I had previously seen him, but since he was against hopkins this may have been misleading. The upcoming Jones fight will answer most questions about where Calzaghe is at.

Roy is shot to bits IMO
he got hurt early on against Adjamu and he was decent to average against Hanshaw and he fought well against Tito but the pace of the fight suited him that is what will be his undoing in this fight with Calz
Joe took Hopkins for granted and paid the price but against Jones those tactics will work perfectly
It's the new "dumb" argument. They're both old!!
Yeah right. I guess every human ages the exact same way. Like I'm the same - physically - as everyone else in this world my age. People need to get a f*cking clue.

I'm so sick of this line of Bullshit. Calzaghe is WAY closer to his than Roy is to his. Roy is so over the hill he might as well be standing on the other side of K2.Calazaghe fans: stop making excuses for Joe.

you said yourself that he would have beaten Roy jones. You've made several posts about that and threads. Are you flip flopping now?
You say Roy Jones is shot. But that he's capable of making Joe look VERY BAD in small pockets (basically because he's old and shot he can't sustain that like he could in his prime). AKA you think that if Jones could be in his prime he could make Joe look like that for the whole fight. You also mentioned Hopkins in a similar manner.
Yes I could be flip-flopping. As both are very good boxers and I envisage a close fight, my mind does change. It is somewhat difficult to out and out say Calzaghe beats Roy or Roy beats Calzaghe 100% of the time. I could envisage either guy winning.
Well, maybe 'very bad' is an exaggeration. I'm sure Roy, who does retain good handspeed will be able to exploit the traditional vulnerability of the lefty to straight rights, and I'm sure at times he will mange to clown Calzaghe a few times when Calzaghe rushes in, but since I expect him to lose a fairly one sided fight to go with this, 'very bad' is probably going too far.
Well, doing it solely for the money is a perfectly feasible explanation too.
I don't know if Calzaghe will be pleased with it, presumably he is since thats what he chose. I'm sure he's fairly proud of his career.
He should be. He's had an excellent career and will one day waltz into the Hall of Fame.
Greatest Super Middle of All Time? Yep (for what it's worth).
All-Time Great? Ehh...Kessler, Lacy and two old men? Methinks not.
Romantic? As in, make lots of money and pretend it's RJJ in his prime?
Umm...ok.
Following his win over the legend Bernard Hopkins who, a couple months later, is too old...wow, what a legacy.
But hey, if Calzaghe is pleased with it, more power to him. I sure hope that Kessler has a great career in front of him ;).

What's really fascinating here is that if you couple this post and all your posts about Roy being shot, you begin to realize that YOU abadger don't even really believe that Joe would have beaten Roy OR Bernard in their primes.
I fail to see how you make that deduction. I think Calzaghe would have beaten prime Hopkins without doubt. Roy Jones I'm not so sure about, Roy Jones was very good.
He's not shot.
We could have a debate about what 'shot' means here. Really, really shot is Mike Tyson in his final fights losing to guys he would have smoked in his prime. Roy isn't quite there yet, he can still win fights against lesser guys, but the fighter we knew is gone so I think 'shot' is not an inaccurate description.
Yes he is. I think it has something to do with Roy being a hugely famous legend and the one peer of Calzaghe that throughout his career everyone regarded as the better fighter. It's not a great choice for boxing or Joe's 'legacy' but I can see the romantic appeal of winding up your career in this fashion.

Calzaghe should look impressive in this fight, more impressive than he did against Hopkins atleast.
I hope Jones will be competitive because otherwise there's no point in even having the fight. He could still counter Joe off the ropes and even drop him, but I can't see him winning at this point.
It will play out something like a more dominant version of Calzaghe v Hopkins, in that Roy will have isolated moments of success and make Calzaghe look bad at points, but Calzaghe will also look much better than he did in that fight and leave no doubt as to wins at the end of the night.
