alot of people says that Bowe was afraid of Lewis and diddnt want to fight him. What poeple seems to forget is that the fight was signed and was suppose to be in March 1995 but Lewis lost to McCall so the fight was cancelled!
Sad since the could have been the fight of the century!
hey
Henry Tillman beat Tyson twice as an amateur. Tyson took him out in 1 round as a professional. Remember Gonzales beat Lewis in the amateurs, got smashed by other heavyweights as a pro. Lewis vs Bowe in the amateur fight doesnt make me much viser. Bowe won the 1 round ,Lewis the second. The TKO was controversial.
Bowe ducked Lewis in 92, but he did agree to fight him in march 1995. I think Bowe ducked him in 92 was a business desicion.
The two did fight actually.
Lewis won the Super-Heavyweight Gold Medal by defeating Bowe by TKO at the 1988 Olympic Games.
And then when Lewis became the #1 contender for Bowe's WBC belt in 1992, Riddick decided it was better to throw the belt in the trash rather than fighting Lennox again. I still remember the press conference. Bowe looked ridiculous!
And because Bowe refused to fight Lewis again, instead we got an overweight Riddick getting obliterated by Evander Holyfield, and that stupid parachuting guy incident.
So Lewis, already having defeated Bowe once, would have had to have been the favorite going into another match.
buster mathis beat joe frazier 3 times in the ams but was Ko'd in the pro's by frazier
It would be a ****ing superfight. Tyson - Bowe would have been a awesome fight as well.
I agree people say during the Tyson era or the early t mid 90's that there wasn't any good boxers about. I mean at least back then they said that about HW. They always compared it to the 70;s and the Ali, Norton, Fraizer and Foreman era...I mean the 90's culdhave had some real classic match ups. Holy, Tyson, Bowe, Lewis, Foreman, Moorer, McCall, Tucker fought to UD Loss with both Lewis and Tyson....Lefty

lewis bowe
Just read an article in Ring magazine. The magazine is with Oliver mcCall on the frontpage. In the magazine it says that the fight between lewis and bowe scheduelded for march 95 is off and that Riddick Bowe would lose 10 Million dolars!
well Lewis had hes opportunety to fight Bowe, but hed missed it.
this could have been the greatest fight in the 90s.
Oh well, we still had Bowe Holyfield I:
Round 10....
an amazing chin? how do you figure this? bowe avoided power punchers like the plague. the biggest puncher he ever faced was probably golota and even golota isnt a big puncher and he pummeled bowe and probably would have stopped him if he wasnt such a head case. holyfield also dropped bowe with a single left hook. lewis would have starched bowe inside of 5 rounds. bowe knew this and literally threw his belt in the trash can instead of being a man and facing lewis
Bowe didn't really avoid anyone outside Lewis in 1993, He was due to defend the title against Mercer but he lost to Ferguson, And Holyfield has a fair bit of power he did knock Tyson out.
Around 1993 Lewis was as weak as i have seen him. He got jabbed away by Bruno in 6 rounds over there in England, a way past hes prime Tucker gave him 1 or two problems and off course the fight with McCall. Since he faught Ruddock he diddnt perform very well before facing Morrison in 96.
Riddick Bowe at the time he won the title was a great boxer. Amazing chin, great jab and he could fight insiode as outside and he is the only one that gave a prime Holyfield a realy beating.

does it matter if Bowe ducked Lewis perhaps you can call hims a coward i would'nt but if that is the way you feel fair enough but dont get it twisted it does not mean Lewis would have beaten just because Bowe avoided him
yeah it would have been competitive, but you have to wonder why a prime Bowe threw away a prestigious world title rather than fight Lennox, who was at that time an unfinished article.
He "ducked" him plain and simple.
The fight not happening in 1993 is to be blamed on Bowe, and his management. They were supposed to fight but Newman decided to milk HBO for their money with a guaranteed contract, and fight soft touches like Dokes, Ferguson, and what they thought was an easy fight in a Holyfield rematch.
As for the fight not taking place a couple years later, I don't know. I'd like to see the footage that's been mentioned earlier that the fight was signed.
when Lewis says on Legendary Nights that Bowe wouldnt fight him, it was in fact Lewis who destroyed that fight with hes loss to oliver mccall
No, Bowe destroyed it by not fighting Lewis as his mandatory and giving up the WBC belt in the process. Blaming Lewis is a revision of history.
my point is that some people are calling Bowe a coward! and thats very fare from true..he actually agreed to fight Lewis and showd more heart then any heavyweight in hes era against Golota!

yeah but to be fair that was not by design was it ?
i Read it in New York Times. When Bowe diddnt have any belts to risk he then decided to challenge Lennox for the title.
Pretty interesting link here, look at this poster Lewis vs McCal and the name Riddick Bowe is there.

I think so because the fight was schedual for March 1995. But since Lewis lost neither of them had interest of a big risk fight without any title.
everybody know that Bowe refused to fight him in 1993. But i am the last man to call Bowe a coward after seeing him in the rematch with Golota. never seen a bigger heart!
