About three months ago, I broke my neck. Literally, I fractured a vertebrae, dislocated a disk, ruptured an artery, and left me with temporary nerve damage in my right arm with a single fall from 14 plus feet. I was not knocked out, but a code blue got me to the hospital quickly. I then had surgery that gave me a bone graft, titanium, and a meaty scar on my neck.
I am supposed to have a full recovery in about 3 more months, so I have high hopes for the rest of my athletic life.
The doctor, of course advised me to not engage in any combat sports like football, boxing, rugby, etc.
I was boxing a decent amount before the injury, and I may want to go back to it. Obviously, I want to weigh to risks seriously, but I'd like some insider advice.
How much damage does the neck take during boxing or MMA?
Unlucky man, just stay strong and don't give up on ya dreams of doin sports, doctors told me a few months back i would never see in my left eye, i was born with bad vision in my left eye, and they said it was never goin get better and i was never goin box, few months later i'am nearly boxing medical standad! How did the fall happen?
As for how much damage your neck takes, it doesn't really take damage, but it is subject to violent twisting if you get caught with a hook or cross just right.
Like everybody else here, I hope you recover quickly without any long term effects.
Finally, and not to put too fine a point on it, I highly doubt any sanctioning body, professional or not, would allow you into the ring. It'd be too much of a risk.

First off, you onl live once. if boxing is your dream, continue. But there are some things you need to consider.
If you continue after 3 weeks, or een a year from now. When you start sparring, you might feel fine. But the repeated stress on the neck from getting hit really f*cks with your bones and joints. I've seen it happen. You will really start to feel it in your late 30's, you may need numerous surgeries and live in constant pain.
Its just something to consider.
Life is short, enjoy it while you can, so avoid sports that involve your neck getting any more damage. You are a lucky guy, it could have been much worse. Hope you get well soon.
14 feet...did you get drunk and fall off of something by any chance? A balcony?
Don't listen to the doctor. its a doctor's job to caution you because if they don't they can be held liable if you get hurt.
It didn't stop Tyson.
"I broke my back...spinal"
 LOL
Vinny Paz came back from a broken neck but id advise u to listen to ur doctor, its not worth it really. Hope u get better quick as mate
that's horrible, man. im sorry to hear that.
obviously the doctor will tell you not to engage in any contact sports.
you should probably wait longer to heal, and see how you're doing.
maybe get 2nd or 3rd opinions from other doctors (or other kinds of doctors), to see what they say.
after you "feel" fine, maybe try some light sparring (after u get in shape) for a while, and see how that goes?
but the way i see it, it's very risky.

get well mate

That answers your question! Hope you feel better! Did you box or anything?
I can't give you insider advice, but I'm pretty damn sure that giving up contact sports is better than being a quadriplegic for the rest of your life. Good luck.

ummm.......i probably wont consider continuing boxing. The neck takes a decent amount of damage especially if your in there with someone who knows how to punch.
Unless your scheduled or have the potential to make millions of dollars the gain doesnt outweigh the risk...........keep your health brotha
