Very difficult one to call
Out of all the posts I have commented on this is the most difficult to give a firm opinion.
Toney had good defensive skills and I could see his style giving Joe great difficulty. The factor in Joe's favour would be stamina if this fight went the distance. I just went on to Boxrec.com and noticed that Toney's weight fluctuated a great deal between fights. Indeed, in the fight before Roy Jones Junior he was 181 lbs! As we saw when Jones Jr struggled against Tarver after fighting at heavyweight, rapid weight loss does a boxer no favours in the ring.
Ok, if they fought at their primes say the Toney who fought Barkley and the Calzaghe who beat Lacey then I would say a Calzaghe late stoppage although not without Toney possibly puttig Calzaghe down in an early round like Hopkins did.
One more thing, please do me a favour if you have 5 minutes and visit the boxing site I am working on www.calzaghe-fight-news.com, a one stop resource for build up to the Calzaghe Jones Junior bout in November. Thanks.
Toney would beat B-Hop and to say that he isn't at all fast is completely inaccurate. Calz piled on wins against weak opposition by overwhelming them with flurries and having the ref stop the fight -- Toney would easily counter Calz flailing. B-Hop vs. Toney depends more on which version of B-hop fights Toney. Its real unfortunate that Toney had that weight drain problem before he fought RJJ but I really don't think he would've beaten him anyway.
Agreed with this.
I don't think JC has a shot in hell against JT. They both have good handspeed(watch the Toney-Barkley fight), James Toney has great power in both hands, granite chin, very hard to hit cleanly, and he had good stamina. The only advantages I give Calz are workrate and handspeed. Calz will bag maybe a couple of the middle and later rounds but, it'll be an all toney affair.
I agree,
But Toney did like to take parts of rounds off, and sometimes he took pretty much full rounds off. If he did that against Calzaghe he would lose rounds through workrate which would put him at a disadvantage. When he is fighting at his best, Calzaghe could take a few rounds here and there, and while he takes time off Calzaghe takes some rounds. And the Toney ends up needing a KO,
It could go either way.

Yeh, I know the Toney who lost to Griffin wasn't prime, but still I have difficulty picking a fighter who lost to MONTEL FRICKIN' GRIFFIN not once, but TWICE.
True,
Toney had ups and downs, like me, boxasmash and MWMerlino said earlier. His eating habbits meant he could look great one time, then aweful another. In a fantasy match up of them both on their best night I think Toney wins a close fight. In reality, Calzaghe would probably win as Toney would probably be drained. :boxing:
Think of the Toney that fought The Blade :boxing:

Just so I can keep this clear in my head, is this the same James Toney who lost twice to Montell Griffin?

the desperation is there...he's calling out klitschko and peter because he wants a legitimate HW title.
I think he's calling out Klitschko for a payday, same with Peter. Although, I suppose he has a chance of beating Peter..He nearly did the first time.
I don't think he has much drive left, he didn't exactly come into the Rahman rematch in good shape. Klitschko would TKO him imo.
Would be nice to see Toney come into a heavyweigth fight in good shape as well :lol1:
yeah...fuckin guy is finally gettin serious at the ripe age of 40...
Would've been nice to see JT landing a counter right as RJJ jumped in...ah well.

He would have made it much more competative though. All you have to do is watch the Toney-Jones fights and one of Toneys other fights at SMW (Where he wasn't drained of course) to tell he wasn't on top form.

toney was a great cruiser/heavy because his style suited him to it but out of b-hop,jones and calz he would be last of the 4 from 160-175, probably #1 at cruiser and above.
toney was just a man with no dicipline and couldnt control his spiriling weight issues, he isnt all that fast and calz would out box him as would b-hop.
he did well at heavy because they were slow and plodding too, jones dazzled him with handspeed and although calz is not as fast, he is damn fast too and would get the W.

Right there is his main problem, he had incredible skills. But he just couldn't keep his weight right to stay at lower weights, and at heavyweight he is aweful. With no weight limit he just comes in as a fat fuck all the time :nonono:
Prime Toney is really any version of Toney that is not over-weight / weight drained or pissing steroids.
