I believe that When Tarver knocked Jones out.. he suffered a concussion
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concussion
Concussions are caused when the head is Violently snapped or knocked and the brain slams against the inside of the skull causing bruising..
The effects are varied..But a few things remain consistent..
RJJ showed some classic symptoms of suffering a concussion
His Physical skills seemed lessened.. His motor skills (i.e. speaking) seemed to suffer as did his sense of reasoning..
Something else about concussions.. If they are not fully healed and you suffer more head trauma.. it will take less force to have a greater effect than the injury which orginally caused the concussion in the 1st place..
SO... yes The weight drain might have affected RJJ, but really Tarver just did his homework and scored a beautiful shot that changed RJJ forever..
Of course age has played a role.. BUT.. RJJ is/was so far ahead of the pack that even a lost step.. cannot explain his sudden "SHOTNESS"
A concussion can..
SO if you consider a Concussion as the problem.. His KO loss to Johnson makes more sense .. as does his additude and subsequent performances afterwards..
Given the time to fully heal.. we have seen somewhat a return of the RJJ of old..
His speed and silky skills are still there.. he is NOT shot.. his chin is not glassy in the truest respect.. But rather, should he suffer another concussive blow.. He will get Knocked out again.. and possibly suffer permanent damage..
That being said.. Calzahghe lacks the brute power to cause such and injury..
So we will be left with SKILL vs SKILL.. And I believe that RJJ has the higher skill set in almost every department except chin..
Which is why even at the age of 39... I suspect RJJ will hand Calzaghe his 1st loss..
On a side note.. should this happen.. and it thrusts RJJ back into the top spotlight. he would be wise to stay away from anyone with heavy hands.. i.e. Moving up in weight .. and pick his fights carefully.. which he has always done anyway..
predcition.. RJJ by UD
Only recently the Boxing Commision realised that Samuel Peter has been completely brain dead all his career.
Did they finally watch one of his interviews?
What?
I see someone saying "Calzaghe is garbage" on the first page, but nothing like that has been said by a Calzaghe fan about Jones anywhere in this thread.
Yeah its only because I am picking RJJ.. I actually WANT Calzaghe to win..
Jensen fought Monrose with a braindamage for the european title. A disgrace. I posted a pic of the weigh-in:

Jensen was brutally KO'ed in a round.
This is what gives boxing a bad name, this stuff shouldn't happen.
That's really a shame, hopefully the people over there get everything settled.

An investigation is ongoing in Denmark (it happened in 2007-2008). The top guys are washing there hands. It's a bit ugly.
That 'incident' is the reason why Kessler fights Haussler in Germany. Mogens Palle (and probably most boxingpeople) considers this fight a gross mis-match. Palle doesn't want a potential disaster held in Denmark, so at the purseoffer he bid very low. He fears another tragedy might be the end of pro-boxing in this country.

That's crazy, I would hope the state athletic commissions in the US have more thorough testing.

Danish fighter Johnny Jensen fought his last 2 fights with a severe braindamage. He cannot concentrate today and he cannot stay outside in the sun without getting headaches.
It's not like it happened in The Upper Volta 50 years ago, no it happened in such well-established nations as Denmark and France. Those commisions definetely has got something to think about and a lesson is there to be learned for everybody who loves the sport.
I will not go in to further details in this matter as it is a little off-topic.

Great post by welt. I disagree however in your winnerpick. I believe Joe will outpoint RJJ on basis of workrate alone. Rjj is also chinny. Thats well-known, so a KO is not out of the question.
Regarding the concussion let me add that there recently was made a survey of american football players. One of the things the survey said was that without proper time to heal, the likelyness of another and far worse concussion is multiplied. It also said, if I recall correctly, that the more concussions you sustain the easier it is to get the next concussion thereby making you susceptible to permanent braindamage.
Boxers live that risk everytime they spar, let alone fight.
The athletic commissions would have picked up a concussion and not let him fight.

Joe wins hands down! he will be too quick even for the mighty RJJ! I would have liked to have seen this fight 5 years ago! but i think now Joe wins...i dont think by stoppage as his hands are prone to problems but i think he will be too busy for RJJ...
its weight loss... when you have such a low body fat compostion (as jacked roy did for ruiz), you have to be extremely careful losing weight. you can only do it by losing a pound a week, max. he weighed in at like 196 if i remember correctly, though Roy was pissed, said the scale was off, and swore he had weighed in over 200 the night before on his scale.
that being said, roy needed at least 25 weeks (6 months), just to get down to a weight where he could resume strength training in his regiment. in total, he really should have given himself a year of proper weight loss time allocation, time to get adjusted, and then time for his regular 8-10 week camp so that he could peak at the new weight on the day of the fight.
roy's downfall was a result of cockiness. he believed that nothing was beyond the realm of possibility for him. he was so good, he forgot that he was a human and had to adhere to the laws of physiology that govern us all.
he really should have waited for the FIRST fight, but luckily, he won based on his will to win and push in the final rounds. after he escaped the first fight with a victory, his body was shot. he should have taken his year rest then to recover, instead of the 6 month delay. he should have also used mackie shilstone to LOSE the weight that he had gained, since Mackie is an expert strength and conditioning coach and would have done it safely...
all that being said. there is no way in hell that roy's team should have let the delusional man fight johnson 4 months later. did they even watch ANY tapes on the guy?!? forget the weight issue (which was of course still at play because roy had still never recovered or adjusted to the shock his body had gone through), just the psychological factor alone should have been reason enough to slow Roy's roll....
i feel that his inactivity since the 2nd tarver loss has allowed roy to recover. 1 fight per year allowed for roy to heathily get down to 170 for tito and look much sharper than he had in years.....
im not sure that a concussion had anything to do with it, but it is in the realm of possibility. perhaps not a concussion, but certainly some type of head trauma, and like i said, the psychological effects that one should take more than 4 months to recover from before going to battle with another champion fighter- a seasoned warrior hungry to recapture the momentum his career once had as an undefeated propsect before a young wrecking ball named bernard hopkins sent his career spiraling into an abyss....
Nice Counter.. Morons take note..
Calzaghe fans??? stop being babies.. its just an OPINION..
