...of Roy Jones Jr moving up to HW?
And if he beats De La Hoya (a big, big 'if'), will this be considered a greater achievement than RJJ beating John Ruiz?
Opinions?
amateurs dont count but we can start with the first division manny won a title. he won his first title as a flyweight. so that means he will be jumping 8 divisions to fight oscar. not only that but he will be fighting a guy who actually knows how to box properly and has power. on top of that manny is the first fighter in many many years to step up to someone so much bigger than him that isnt a runner.
Toney fought Jirov at 30 lbs above the weight he won his first title and jirov wasnt a runner
pacman weighed in at welterweight for juniorlightweight fights.......on fight night, roy was outweighed by 30 lbs.....while dlh will outweigh pac by 15lb at most...
I'd rank it as a better achievement. Oscar may be fairly old now, but he isn't shot and he has been consistently a P4P fighter for many years. Ruiz was never a P4P fighter and was a weak heavyweight champion. Not that I'm saying that Roy's win wasn't excellent.
100% agree

this is much more impressive than what rjj or mayweather has done. it is easier for cowardly runners to beat bigger men than toe to toe ko fighters like pacquiao.
roy never ran against ruiz. he stood and faced him most of the fight
Natural cruiser?? Roy never weighed in at the cruiser limit his whole life. In fact, he had to do "a Shilstone" just to get to 193. WTF.
Roy weighed 177 for his fight with Virgill Hill, and that was the most he had weighed pre-Ruiz. also you cant say Roy only jumped 2 divisions, because he bulked up around 30 pounds. pac only has to bulk up 10-12 pounds.

Exactly. People talk about Roy being the first former middleweight to win a title at heavyweight in a hundred years, but he actually only went up 2 divisions as by then he was a natural light heavy, if not a natural cruiser. So the same rule applies here. Yeah sure, Manny isn't a natural flyweight anymore but he has as much right to lay claim to that as Roy Jones did to being a middleweight.
If you compared Pacquiaos night of the fight weigh-ins to Mayweather and Judah weigh-ins there wouldn't be much of a difference.
It would be a "good" but not great achievement to beat Hoya.

Jesus Christ yes!!!! Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! DLH is a far superior fighter to Ruiz, by about a million miles. And moving up to 147 for Pac is the same as Roy moving up from 175 to heavy, if not a bigger achievment. In my mind this would eclipse what Roy achieved. But then I'm not a Roy nuthugger like the majority on here.
yea i just saw roy was 193 against ruiz so that is very impressive.. but I dont think Pac is an oversized 125 pounder .. he sarted his career at 106
i think the pacquiao started at 106/108 argument is a bit deceiving because he was like 14 when he was pro..
but anyhow.. i still think it would be a great accomplishment..

no it probably shouldn't, but if Manny can kayo him it just could be. Let's not forget Ruiz in all fairness despite his notoriety for having a horribly boring style was a top 10 Heavyweight in the world, and a current Title holder at the time Jones beat him, making that win a pretty good one.
where on the contrary yes Manny is moving up 2 weight classes, but it's vs a 36 year old DLH who's more businessman than boxer.
what'll be more interesting then the size differential is how much more $$ Oscar get's then Pacquiao once it all gets sorted out (post fight, PPV buys etc)
In truth, Pacquiao has been an oversized SFW. He should have been at LW loooong ago. He has been majorly outweighing his opponents.
If Forbes and Mayweather fought at WW, then it is within range for Pacquiao. At least Pac will actually be at/above the WW limit on fight night.
Roy was shy of 200, and FMJ was shy of 154 on fight night.

its pretty close IMO and is on the same level now that i think about it.. also, DLH is a better p4p fighter than John Ruiz ever was
