Both were heated battles between a Mexican and Puerto Rican fighter that ended before the final bell. In your opinion which fight was better, more anticipating, more dramatic, more exciting and why?
this is a really reallly hard question.....
both were great fights... in wich one i end it up happy... of course vargas vs tito... :D but cotto vs marg... was fucking damn good 2..
That also could be argued upon, Margarito was born in the US and would probably hold an american passport or a dual nationality.
Yeah, he was born in LA, but this tread is not about that.... Vargas showed a lot of balls in his fight against Tito, that's commendable. Both were great fights.
Margarito-Cotto was a better fight because it involved a Puerto Rican fighter facing off against an actual Mexican. "El welter es de Mexico! El welter es de Mexico!"

Incorrect. Vargas fully got back into that fight and at points looked like he was going to win it.
He won some rounds and got a softish knockdown (at least compared to Tito's KDs). I don't know if it looked like he was going to win.
I just finished watching this fight an hour ago.
What was apparent to me was that Vargas was too green for Trinidad. He shouldn't have been, because Winky and Quartey were both very good opponents and pushed him hard, but Trinidad was able to show his weaknesses in a way that they were not (although I felt Winky deserved the decision over Vargas)
He'd never been knocked down before this fight, and when that left hook landed, he tried to hold on but he didn't really know how. He kind of lurched forward trying to clinch, missed, and ended up being knocked down twice within a minute.
I think that Trinidad was a better fighter anyway, but his experience also meant that when hurt, he knew how to overcome it by buying himself time. Vargas on the other hand wasn't used to being hurt and so he didn't really know how to react once he was hit so hard.
So I'd say that Vargas being knocked down early didn't have a big impact, because his lack of experience meant that it was always a possibility in a later round. Vargas certainly showed a lot of heart, especially in the 9th round, when he was rocked several times but just kept attacking.
I disagree with the poster who said that Vargas was never in the fight after the 1st. He was actually ahead on points after 5-6 rounds.
Very good post.
The fact that he was ahead after 5-6 rounds was a testament to Vargas' extraordinary skills. But the damage he took in the first round was telling. No fighter can be at thier best after getting caught twice the way Fernando did against Tito. Those were murderous left hooks. I'm just saying, the playing field was not level after he took those shots in the first. He had to use all his might to pull himself out of that hole.

I've always wondered how that fight would have played out had the first round not happened the way it did. Those two knockdowns were brutal and had to have taken a lot of starch out of Fernando. Would he have been able to finish Tito in the 4th had he not been decked in the first? Who knows. We we do know is that he was never quite the same after that fight.
Yeah the fight effectively finished him as a top level elite fighter. I don't think he would have been able to stop Tito regardless of the events of the first round though. A lot of guys got Tito down but only Bernard has been able to stop him.

They were both great fights, I think Margarito vs Cotto was slightly better because Tony was the underdog. He took so many punches early and rallied and eventually out toughed the "better fighter" to pull out the victory.
Tito was favored vs Vargas and Vargas never really had a chance in that fight, not after he got clocked the way he did in the first round. What made that fight exciting was the way he got himself back into the fight to a certain degree after that brutal first round.

Agreed. Good post!

Are you nuts?! Margo vs Cotto!

Unfortunetly I picked the loser in both these fights, but I would have to say Tito-Vargas was better. Both were brutal fights, but I thought their fight had more ebb and flow. More momentum shifts. Cotto-Margs was excellent, but it was all Cotto and then it was all Margs. Both were great to watch though.

Tito/Vargas had more electricity to it for some reason. Win or lose... it was more intense for me to watch. Cotto/Marg was good but not as dramatic.
exactly, Cotto was being worn down badly from round 7 on and the outcome was obvious really early. Vargas had been dropped twice and come back to drop Trinidad so that fight could have turned either way at any time.
If you thought Margarito-Cotto was better, then you haven't seen Vargas-Trinidad. Plus Vargas and Trinidad were both undefeated and considered way more elite than Cotto and Margarito probably ever will be.
Tito vs Vargas because both guys were undefeated, better skilled, better punchers and you didn't know who was going to win until the end. I saw the Cotto/Margarito's outcome since the 7 maybe the 8.
