Back when I watched this fight for the first time around a year ago, I thought it was pretty close and a Marquez win. Boy was I dead wrong....IT WAS A CLEAR MARQUEZ WIN.
My card:

The official scores were 116-111x2 and 118-109. So my card was pretty much dead in the middle of those. Still, HBO's call is THE WORST I've ever heard. If I was blind and watching the fight, I would have believed Barrera had won 116-109. The only rounds I think Marquez won according to them were rounds 7 and 10, but of course round 7 was such a "travesty" because of the knockdown not called.
The knockdown still would have been a 10-9 round for Barrera since Marquez had a probably 10-8 round before the knockdown anyway. That and I think Nady made the right call indirectly. It was an obvious knockdown, but I think when someone hits someone when they are down, that knockdown shouldn't be counted insted of a DQ. It's not like the knockdown would have helped Barrera anyway. Marquez was fine in round 8 and he had kicked Barrera's ass in round 7.
Jim Lampley sounded like a 3 year old kid about to cry who didn't get his way when the knockdown wasn't called and went on some bullshit rant about how if Las Vegas had instant replay, it'd be overturned. Like it fucking mattered.
Harold Ledderman's card was even worse. 114-113 Barrera. I thought him having Jirov ahead of Toney until the 12th and having Paul Williams beating Quintana was bad. This is BY FAR his worse card. I'm literally disgusted people scoring this fight for Barrera. It was competitve especially for the first 6 rounds. Then Marquez beat him clearly and even punished him at times.
"Oh Barrera is showing such good defense by rolling his head so it lessons the blow" Guess what Steward? He's still getting hit and then Barrera gets hit again. The only good thing about Barrera was his jab. It was constient and hit Marquez a lot, but Marquez still landed a lot more then Barrera did. I found it incredibly cool that round 9 compubox's stats were pretty much the same, even if Marquez was landing many blows in reality.
Still, if you thought Cotto-Margarito's or De La Hoya-anyone was bad. Barrera-Marquez's call was the worse I've seen. Atleast Merchant had some sense to score it for Marquez, but his card was still awful. 114-113 Marquez. Marquez won clearer then that.
I love this photo. It's like Barrera is saying "What? I didn't hit him when he was down...honest"http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o14/richdada/MarquezBarrera23.jpg
Im not surprised. Nady just sat there doing nothing after Marquez got knocked down, and I guess Barrera was just like 'oh shit...well, ref aint doing anything and isnt even saying that Marquez is on the canvas...may as well continue to hit him!'
that was the dumbest part about that whole event. Nady took a point away for Barrera hitting Marquez while he was down(rightly so), but never ruled the knockdown. did he ever stop and think about that? how the hell did Barrera hit him while he was down if Barrera never knocked him down in the first place?
just a stupid call.
yea and again my score was either 114-112 or 115-111 Marquez, including that knockdown round score 9-8 for Barrera. although 9-9 is a fine score for that round too.
I had Marquez winning in a very close contest. JMM took a lot of punishment in that fight and Barrera was landing the more solid punches (the KD and look at JMM's face) but JMM had his moments too particularly when he had Barrera in trouble before he went down, but no way did he blow away Barrera like how it was officially judged. The scores should've been a lot closer and I think it even warrants a rematch.
Barrera rolled with a lot of the punches I thought. It was a close, competitive fight that Marquez won 116-111.
The 7th round could have changed things depending on how you judge it could have been 10-8 Barrera. I personally thought JMM was dominating the round beforehand though.
One of the better fights of that year in terms of skill and excitement. Just quality stuff. It proved to me that if they met in their prime, it's pretty much a pick 'em fight.
I do. Barrera is a dirty ass fighter when he's pissed especially. Examples:
Him mauling Hamed. Wasn't getting humliated, but he was frustrated.
Him mauling Pacquiao in the second fight. Getting humiliated and then hit pacquiao on the break.
Him almost hitting Kennedy Mckinney when Mckinney went down. If Russel hadn't steped in Barrera looked like he was going to hit him again.
Didn't he hit Morales in the first fight when he was on the ground or something like that?
Barrera had looked down at Marquez on the canvas and then hit him. He obviously saw that Marquez was on the ground. It was a great counter shot, but it doesn't change the fact that Marquez was giving out some brutal punishment and hurt Barrera what like two times in that round? Marquez was a bit stunned, but he wasn't really out of it like he was when Pacquiao knocked him down.
Disagree on a couple of things:
-Marquez was landing a lot of cleaner blows in the later half of the fight and Barrera was only landing one shot at a time or pitty pats.
-Even if the knockdown was counted, it still should have been 9-9. Marquez getting knockdowned at the end of the round does not erase the ass whooping he was putting on Barrera in that round. Why do you think Barrera hit Marquez while he was down? Because Marquez talked a bunch of shit before the fight??? No because Marquez was kicking his ass in that round and he was getting humilated. Barrera is a very dirty fighter (and this is coming from a Hopkins fan).
yea, like I said, Marquez dominated the second half of the fight pretty much. Barrera wasnt landing half as good as Marquez then, I agree with you fully on that.
I felt that Barrera deserved a 10-8 round. that right hand that put down Marquez was not the only right hand Barrera landed, it wasnt some lucky punch. before the knockdown, Barrera had actually recovered fairly well and landed the right hand pretty flush about twice before the knockdown. Considering that + Marquez was clearly hurt, even worse than Barrera was in the first half/three quarters of the round, I thought overall Barrera deserved the two extra points.
I dont really think that Barrera was thinking about how humiliated he was. hes always been a fairly dirty fighter, but it was the heat of the moment and Marquez was partially up, he wasnt lying flat on the canvas...Barrera just hit him without it registering that it was illegal at the time. kind of hard to think straight after a round like that, ya know?
...but I cant actually say what was going on in his head. thats kind of how it looked to me. plus the fact that Nady stood around watching butterflies while Marquez was down probebly didnt help. what are you supposed to do, stand around and wait?
Barrera was very competitive for the early part of the fight and was robbed of a very legitimate knockdown, but Marquez pretty much swept the last 3 or 4 rounds. Barrera's stamina had been going downhill since before this fight, so its no surprise.
If you had counted the knockdown and made it 9-8 round for Barrera(as it shouldve been) I think I wouldve had it around 115-111 for Marquez. Barrera was landing just about as many punches as Marquez to my eye, but some of them were sort of pitty pat ones...he sacrificed punching power for speed. on the other hand, Marquez wasnt always landing that clean himself.
very entertaining fight, two extremely skilled fighters.

I thought mab won, but I don't care to get into an arguement with people here. I thought mab was the better counter puncher in this fight.
Counter pucnher does not equal the number of shots landed. Marquez outlanded him by a fucking ton and Marquez was doing much better work. If people think this was a close fight based off competitiveness for the first 6 rounds and a little later on, that's fine, but after round 6 none of the rounds were ever "On the table" like they were for Casamayor-Marquez. Marquez was out landing and out working Barrera.
i thought Marquez was the clear winner but then again i watched the skysports version of the fight i did not have to listen to biased HBO commentry :lol1:
TBH i was very frustrated watching this fight as im a big MAB fan and i know he could of beaten Marquez but he fought to conservatively
he fought like he had the fight in the bag i truly beilieve MAB fought the way he did because he thought he was infront and that is why he lost the fight not because JMM was the better fighter
I thought Marquez-Barrera was a close fight. Barrera did much better than I thought and had a good showing for himself. Still wasnt enough but he did pretty well. Good fight too.
Now Marquez-John was awful. I had Marquez winning every round but round 3. That was biasm at its finest. Marquez schooled John, he was robbed blind.
That or you were buzzed and was blinded by HBO's call. Still worst call I've ever heard. Fuck even Donaire's "HE'S KNEEING HIM" (Darchinyan-Gorres) is better then HBO's call.

You are quite simply wrong. Barrera should have won that fight. It was a brilliant performance by MAB. Marquez was simply outsmarted for the majority of the fight. MAB controlled the pace, the action, the distance, everything.
His only really shining moment was when he had MAB on queer street. Then he got dropped. I love Marquez, but he did not win this fight. He was having fits trying to time MAB.
