I've been watching quite a few of the boxing matches during the Olympic's and it's quite obvious this scoring system is flawed. It seems like nobody likes the system and it just doesn't work. I don't know how many times I've seen punches land that weren't counted and at times points given when I didn't see a punch landed. Plus the rule of landing using the white part of the glove and in certain areas is just ridiculous. It's become a lot of throwing a few punches and then holding.
I was wondering what kind of changes you would make to amatuer boxing.
For one I would get rid of the headgear. Just possibly for the Olympics and World Championships or any other big time competition. It would bring back the KO element. Somebody could be getting schooled but then land that one punch to end it.
As for the scoring, maybe go to the pro style of three judges, but have that be open scoring. There still might be some corruption with that so that could be a problem, but it's better than what it is now.
These are a couple, so maybe you guys have some more.
Good point! I guess the key point is that it is amateur. Not sure if it would really be in their best interests to be picking up injuries specifically if they aren't getting paid for it.
I know the British amateurs that went to the Olympics got funded about £70,000 a year according to what I read, with that kind of backing you'd have thought they might have done better. I doubt other Am's have that backing so can't really afford injuries.
True I didn't think about injuries, like a badly swollen eye or a big cut. I wonder how they did it back in the day when they didn't have headgear.

yep.ama boxing really isn't an indicator to who's going to be a great pro fighter unless its a really good prospect, like a khan.
that's how the biscuit crumbles:D
in reality this shit is nothing but glorified sparring.
i guess with them fighting with the frequency that they do the head gear prevents injuries,i don't know they can figure it out.

I doubt a 17 year old Amir Khan would have got an Olympic Silver with no headgear. lol.

Just make it the same thing as pros except bigger gloves and a little extra protective gear.
then everyone could transition to the pros better, and the fights wouldnt be garbage. and throw that scoring idea out the window...its hilarious how a guy can land 10 punches and get 1 point out of it.
-Take off the headgear
-Use smaller gloves
-Implement a 10-point must system
-Use competent boxing judges/referees
i take away the head gear for international tournaments.
Rather than start a new thread gonna hijack this slightly.
Does anyone know how long the system has been like this?
Was it invented by that Asian dude they just interviewed? This dude wants to start his own league....
Would it be the same way if the Olympics were in some other country this year?
I thought I heard Pappas and Atlas mention that their is whole new set of people at AIBA and they just inherited this new scoring system.
As for that league I agree with Pappas and Atlas it won't last. I mean unless they are getting paid huge dollars, which I doubt, how would they stay there when so much more money can be made in pro boxing. I could only see mediocre guys being in that league. Because you can be in that league and still compete in the Olympics, but you would have had to start in that league to begin with.
Yeah I think no matter where he olympics were the scoring would have been ragged on. The Chinese fighters though it seems every time they fight get some helpful scoring.
It has to go back to a 10 point system, but it won't so maybe they should introduce another 2 judges to the 5 they already have and have the same rule about if 3 judges press the button within a second of eachother, that raises the odds a little.
Some of the eastern europeans and even Mongolians are such savvy amateur boxers. I watched a fight between two eastern europeans, neither threw a lead of any sort being it a jab or a hook. They both spent the whole fight trying to land with straight punches from their rear hand because they knew that it would score.
To do well in the Amateurs you need to hit and stay away. The Americans got drowned by the more experienced Europeans. To be fair you have to have a specialised style or you ain't winning shit in the Ams on the big stage unless you play the game. Britain's James De Gale seems to have modified his style to give himself a better chance of medaling.
The Super Heavyweight division looks more like pro boxing.
Yeah the Eastern Euro's are savvy. They know how to work the system. Which you can't blame them for because the object is to win. I rarely saw a jab scored unless it was a blistering shot. It's just that the way it is now it doesn't totally seem like boxing.
Getting rid of the corruption would be the first place to start!
I liked the Commonwealth games tournaments better.
You get some milkman from Papua New Guinea looking like he's put boxing gloves on for the first time getting starched in about 10 seconds, it's comic gold.

I'd make knockdowns have value and incentive so we could see some real action instead of the pittypat shit all the time.
Yeah the pittypat gets annoying. It's become just about scoring and whether it's effective or not doesn't matter.
