Who would have a better chance to beat Mayweather now, Margarito or Cotto. Even if you think neither guy would beat him, vote for who you think would have a better chance of pulling off the upset.
Cotto
You can't dismiss Cotto automatically coming off the Margarito loss. Both Cotto's & Floyd's styles would make for an incredible and exciting fight.
Margarito would try trapping Floyd as he did with Cotto, but Floyd is smart in the ring and could possibly frustrate the hell out of Margarito similar to the way Cotto did the 1st 6-7 rounds. But if Floyd gets nailed, it could be trouble for him as well.
But Cotto stylistically poses the biggest threat overall. Don't forget, Cotto can punch too.
I understand your situation, and am very impressed with what a sharp student you are. However, you should watch Frazier-Ali I the very first chance you get. It's like telling a film student that they need to see "The Godfather". It's a standard that all others are measured by.
I also haven't seen the Godfather, so that statement doesn't mean anything to me. :)
Man, this became a really good thread. One of the best in recent memory.
I say cotto all the way.
Margarito would be a threat to any prime fighter (even mayweather) however to be completely honest he's a bit one dimensional...he can brawl...however his boxing skills are lacking and even though the 1200+ punches would be hard for mayweather to handle i think he can get around that in the end to force a decision.
Cotto on the other hand i would say has a better chance because not only can he brawl but he's developed into quite the skillful boxer. something that would give mayweather much more problems.
margarito tends to come in and go out without the use of a jab...just walks in and out...mayweather would tag him all night long in that situation.
cotto is skillful as a boxer and could possibly either get closer to beating mayweather or possibly win.
I wrote my explanation in another thread.
The gist of it was that Mayweather has shown more vulnerability against pressure fighters than boxer-punchers. I pick Margarito, because his stamina will make him more dangerous than the pressure fighter that gave Mayweather the most trouble, Castillo.
on point.....Floyd will back Cotto up at some point during the fight the way he did DLH...but I can't see Floyd backin Margarito up NEVER...like you said, Marg's stamina and relentless pressure can be Floyd's undoing!

Margarito, because he has incredible stamina and a rock solid chin. Plus, he's a big welterweight and stronger than Cotto. I have seen Cotto fade late against Mosley and Margarito. If he tired against Mayweather it would be a pot shot fest for Mayweather because Floyd does not tire. Say what you want, but Mayweather has incredible conditioning.
I think i will go with Margarito based on him being the bigger guy and he probably will not stop comming through 12 rounds, although i think Floyd could frusterate him. I think Floyd would actually fight Margarito more then people think, he would do ok on the inside (inside Margarito's wide shot and tie him up when he is done) or on the outside where he could outbox him and make Margaito follow him eatting lead rights. Margarito has a chance because he is strong and when Floyd tries to tie up Margarito could push him off and get him in the middle range for his own power shots. Also it is possible for Margarito to outwork Floyd. I do not really like his chances but i can see why he has a shot.
Cotto is the more skilled fighter but he is not winning a boxing match with Mayweather and there is no way Cotto would fight him like that. He would have to come after Floyd but the question is how much leather he could actually land while Floyd would be landing clean shots. Floyd Mayweather is a dangerous man when he is forced to fight. It would be a very interesting fight though, I just do not think Cotto could get it done over 12 rounds barring some kind unforseen problem for Floyd
It is hard to ascertain how any fighter would do against Floyd without seeing them actually fight him, because there is no basis for comparision because no one fights like Floyd Mayweather. Floyd is great at fucking up others styles making people do what they do not want to do.
But I still give him next to no chance against Floyd
The only way Floyd would have lost to either of these guys is with a broken hand or messed up shoulder
You have to admit Cotto does have the tools to pull off the win, he just has to use them correctly.
Miguel Cotto, he is a better all around fighter compared to Margarito, he has the skills and adjustments to get the UD from Floyd. Because when fighting Floyd you can't just go there and fight with one style, he would have to make adjustments to confuse Floyd and Cotto is more capable of doing that. He also has great momentum and accuracy that would help him with a hit and run fighter like Floyd.

Muy bueno posto....good post!
I've never seen him, but I've heard about the absolute ferocity of Duran. If it's true, I would probably pick Duran to beat Mayweather, especially at lightweight, where Duran was the best ever.
man I hate to keep ragging on you, but if you haven't even seen Roberto Duran, then how can anyone take your opinion on the best fighter on the planet seriously in regards to who would beat him and how?
Margarito.
Though Cotto is nowhere near as hit and run as PBF, Cotto resorted to that in his fight against Margarito as the fight progressed and paid a price. Margarito would do the same against Floyd because you can't run from the guy and Floyd doesn't hit hard.
Cotto-PBF would be an even match, and if Cotto gets momentum back maybe Floyd can come out of retirement and fight him.
