I've been studying him recently because i hadn't seen any fights from him before and wanted to know who i thought had the edge in the Campbell-Guzman fight in September.
As an amateur, he won 310 out of 320 bouts, which is a very impressive record.
Nowadays he is 28-0 with 17 knockouts. He looks great, so fast, awesome combos. Defense is great too, which is what your would expect from being trained by Mayweather Sr.
He's undefeated which is always a good bonus, plus he is a 2 division world champ (122 and 130) he fought at 126 but did not become a world champ there. If he defeats Campbell he will be a 3 division world champ at 135.
He's 32, but i think he can go for a while yet and turn into a 4 division world champ at 140, maybe even 5 division world champ at 147, though 147 will be tough because the punches are a lot harder than what he will be used to, plus the competition is fierce at that weight.
What's everyone else's view on Guzman and his future, also does anyone know what Guzman himself has said about his future in boxing?
Because small guys age much faster than bigger guys.
Pick the best conditioned bantamweights or featherweights of all time. Now, at what age did they fall off?
Athletes nowadays are different to guys of the past and boxing is different nowadays too. Guzman's style of fighting is also different to many so that's not really a fair question.
His relationship with WBO is as crooked as anything! He pretty much runs that organisation.
yeah, exactly. The Warren.B.O. is what people joke about it standing for.
And if you think about it, it does make sense. How does Guzman get to be #1 contender at 135 for the WBO w/o even fighting at 135? Things that make you go hmmmm. And also, the deal makes sense for both fighters. Guzman wouldn't get much attention or praise for beating Arthur and he was going to go to 135 anyways. Beating Arthur doesn't prove much or gives him any media attention. Campbell is obviously a much bigger name. Arthur on the other hand avoids the loss, becomes champion and a pretty known star fighter in scotland/europe that Warren is promoting. works well for both of 'em
Yeah, natas is awesome..
Yeah that's right,
Wank just wanted to keep his fighter safe, as always.

You're probably spot on as well.

Frank Warren. The visa issue was a non problem. The truth of the matter was he had a visa problem that delayed his original flight, he caught a later flight within 24 hours. He was still in Scotland 11 days prior to the fight so there was no reason for the fight to be canceled.
I followed this situation very closely. Guzman was pissed the fight was canceled. Frank Warren said they were having problems figuring out a new date and left Guzman waiting for two weeks, which obviously is tough for Guzman since he loses weight prior to the fight. So eventually he said fuck waiting I'm going to 135.
My suspicion on what happened though, which is totally unproven, but I think Frank Warren was protecting his fighter, Alex Arthur and didn't want to see him lose. He makes a deal with Guzman, saying "look, we cancel this fight and I make sure the WBO makes you the #1 contender at 135 and you'll get a crack at Nate Campbells belt." Guzman takes the deal and Arthur gets to become champion without even stepping into the ring. Frank Warren is shady like that!

He has showed no signs of aging, he is in his prime now i don't see why he won't be fighting 6 years from now, especially when he has just started getting the biggest fights of his career.
Unfortunately, he re-signed with Seminole Warriors boxing for some reason, bad move IMO. Golden Boy was his co-promoter til that contract ended with the Soto fight, Top Rank wanted to co-promote him after that, which would have been an excellent move and an eventual shot at Pacquiao, but, I have not heard anything about it afterwards
I was going to say, he really should have stuck with Golden Boy, maybe even Top Rank, either one would have got him better opportunities.
he should try to get under another pro company .. imo... that would help him to build more his name..

I would think so. But apperntly not, I heard that all the visa issue would mean was that Joan would have arrived 1 day later than he was meant to,
It was bullshit. Wank knew Joan would beat Arthur, so he kept fucking around until Guzman vacated and the title was given to Arthur. Classic Wank.
Warren knew Guzman had trouble getting to and staying at 130 weight, which is why he postponed the fight disguising it as visa problems, and one month later did not provide a new date for the fight.
He didn't get a title at 126 because Harrison was always postponing and holding the belt hostage with all his problems. So he moved up since he almost always struggles with weight going upto 17 pounds the day after the weigh-in in some fights. He is 32, but, I doubt he has 6-8 years left after 320 amateur bouts (they do take something out of you), 28 fights pro fights against hard punchers, and years of sparring against mostly welterweights and much bigger guys.
Guzman does have the makings to be great, all he needs, are the opponents for him to prove it. His style fast, elusive, great defense, footwork, chin, stamina, and versatility gives him a great shot at anyone in the nearby divisions. A win over Campbell would be a big step toward greatness since he will have 3 of the 4 major titles in the lightweight division (6 in 3 divisions), a win over the winner of Casamayor-Marquez would be a great next step, and Pacquiao or Hatton would make him a first ballot hall of famer and a boxing star.
What for Scotland?
A passport usually does the job, correct me if am wrong?

ugh.. he had all that before he even trained with Mayweather Sr..
He could've been great, unfortunately he couldn't get the fights he wanted in his youth do to problems with promoters and such.
He could still make a good career out of his situation though.
I think realistically, he has 2 options. He can keep working his way up and be a 4/maybe 5 division world champ without spending much time in each division OR he can stay in one (say 135) and fight all the big fights available there, he already has Campbell but there's others like Pacquiao (rejected the DLH fight), winner of Diaz-Katsidis, winner of JMM-Casamayor, maybe even give a boxing lesson to Amir Khan.
does he have the makings to be great? Yes.... will he be great all depends on who he fights... If Pacman decides to fight him... he has a great chance of giving pacman a hell of a fight.

Only time will tell really. He has all the makings of becoming a great IMO. He has amazing speed and lots of angles to assault you with. He has lost a bit of pop lately though.
He was supposed to come over here to fight Alex Arthur in Scotland but the fight was called off for some reason? Can't remember why? Shame, i would've liked to have seen him fight in person.
Wank Warren, some bullshit to do with his visa

Yeah it's like Calzaghe in a way, he's only just starting to get big fights and to be recognised, at a later age than he would have liked. I think he will still be boxing for a while though, Hopkins is 43 and still in great shape taking the big fights. He's 32 so he could keep going successfully for another 6-8 years imo.
I doubt he will get the Pacquiao fight if Pacman takes the DLH offer. But I'd love to see that fight with Pacquiao!
I think he can beat Campbell though, probably by UD. After that he should defend at 135 for a few fights then try and be a 4 division world champion by moving to 140, which i think is not too hard considering who is in that division.
