Because if a fighter has "The Ring Magazine" Championship he doesn't need to give a shit about the alphabet gangs. He is the real champ. The rest of the division are either trying to beat the champ or not good enough to unify the ABC-belts.
I think it’s because of the realization that it isn’t the belt that makes you a champion, it’s whom you beat. If Klitschko dropped all of his belts except for his IBO one, would anyone not consider him the champion any longer? It just doesn’t matter any longer.
Plus the more belts you hold the more sanctioning fees you have to pay. Also, it forces you into mandatory against opponents that may not have truly earned a title shot. Thus, if you establish yourself as “the man to beat” in your division, why pick up a meaningless belt that is only going to cost you money and force you into mandatory fights that may not be financially advantageous for you?
Makes sense for the most part but the title of undisputed champion has a nice ring to it and when you have all 4 belts to prove it it goes better with the title.....A Tournament for the unifacation of some of these divisions could make lots of money for these fighters. I mean for instance you wouldn't want to see a tourney in WW divison?? Antonio Margarito, Andre Berto, Joshua Clottey, and Paul Williams square off for the title of undisputed Welter Weight Champion??....Lefty
Why doesn't anyone try to unite the belts in any of the divisions anymore??? Anyone have any idea???......Lefty
