It was a bigger and more significant fight than Roy Jones vs Bernard Hopkins but I guarantee if you asked whether that was a superfight, the response would be overwhelmingly...
"OMG it sooooo was :wank:"
I voted yes. I definately think it was a superfight, no doubt. Two undefeated champions of a division fighting it out for total supremacy. Pretty hard to make a superfight if that wasn't one I think.
The only reason the USA didnt call it a super fight was because both fighters wasnt from there!
If both fighters would have been from the USA and both had the same unbeaten records and duel titles like Calzaghe/Kessler had then they would had hailed it a super fight IMO!
Let me just give you an insight how big the fight was in Wales, I know 5 of my friends who have never really considered even watching boxing all watching it and now are harcore fans.
All 5 of them have actually gone boxing themselves too because of it, I could have talked to anyone of my friends about the fight and they would have known what I was talking about. My old man who is not a fan AT ALL and gives me grief for watching so much boxing stayed through the late hours to watch it with me.
To me it was simply becuase both fighters were unbeaten and were fighting to unify the super middleweight titles, but as far as it being a super fight similar to the likes of Trinidad/De La Hoya/, Leonard/Hearns, Mayweather De La Hoya? I would have to say no.
I can't believe this poll is so fucking close...
This was OBVIOUSLY a superfight.
Listen... there was NO ONE else in the division that could even pretend to be relevant at this point.
Two undefeated fighters (and not young, untested, undefeated fighters, but... good, veteran champion undefeated fighters) squaring off for 3 ABC belts and The Ring title. The only reason the 4th ABC belt wasn't included was because one of the participants vacated it.
This was far and away the most signficant single boxing match of 2007... hands down, not even close.
It is shocking that so many people didn't think this fight was important or significant or whatever... whatever their motivation was to say that this fight wasn't a superfight is completely beyond me.
Good post, when you consider what was at stake and the credentials both had coming into it, it shouldnt even be close
if both fighters were American the poll would look slightly different.
I'm sure I've mentioned this to you before, but what a fucking fight! Most people don't seem to realise how good it was, or just how well both fighters, but especially Calzaghe (sorry) performed. On the HBO broadcast Manny Steward practically proclaimed them the best two boxers in the world, and Kellerman went from clearly hating Calzaghe to gushing praise! Awesome it was.
Oh yes. For those who love great technical boxing this was a great fight for sure. And yes. Calzaghe was a master in the fight. As much as I hated seeing Kessler lose I couldn't help but admire Joe's performance. It just might have been a great fighters peak performance.

It wasn't the most exciting fight ever, but it really wasn't bad at all...
It definitely had an inordinate amount of skill in the ring that night though... absolutely incredible boxing went on during those 12 rounds.
But don't get too high on Kellerman gushing... that is all that guy does. He is so knowledgable, but such a fucking fanboy... of like, everyone. He is really irritating.

I gotta agree ,it was an awesome fight and very technical ! You couldn't help but admire the way Calzaghe changed tactics mid way through to dominate the rest of the fight !
Love him or hate him you gotta give Joe Calzaghe props cause he is a very technical fighter!
