I remember before the Margarito fight, that there were people saying that Miguel Cotto was a more skilled fighter than Tito Trinidad. That his career will end up being much better.
In retrospect (post-Margarito), what do you guys think of those claims? Is it still possible for Cotto to be a better fighter in his prime than Tito was? I personally don't think so, and didn't think so even before this loss. I mean, I'm not one of those people who heaps a bunch of criticism onto a fighter for a single loss, but in this scenario we have to keep in mind that Trinidad never had a loss at 147. Never had a loss at 154, neither. And this was against competition such as Vargas, Delahoya, Carr, and a prime, undefeated Yori Boy. All of whom were probably much better than anybody Cotto has beaten. And some of whom are much better than Margarito.
Felix Trinidad was more physically gifted than Cotto. Bigger, faster and he hit harder. Cotto is probably more technically adept and smarter in the ring, but Tito is overall the better man.
You little shit, I was the one who said that. For the record I think filth agreed.
Yes, Cotto can still have a better career than Tito. Tito had an embarrassing win against Oscar. Cotto still hasn't looked as bad as that. And when Tito did lose he was horrendous.
Cotto doesn't have Tito's quality wins, but he has plenty of time to get them.
To put it simply:
In terms of accomplishments Cotto is nowhere near Trinidad.
In terms of technical ability Trinidad is nowhere near Cotto.
I agree to an extent, the first point is definitely true, Cotto is the more versatile fighter IMO but I don't think he's that much better technically than Trinidad.

I do not agree with this at all...I think Tito is very underrated in his technique...he was a smart fighter.... his DEFENSE wasnt really solid but his ability to throw punches, properly place his punches etc was VERY good IMO

More skills yes, better overall fighter NO.

well his career isn't over so we don't know yet do we?

i think thats a better way to put it
Not right now at least, We will have to wait and see, since Tito never lost at 147 or 154 like some poster on top stated, and Tito was way much more popular than Cotto
I think Cotto is more entertaining and I also thinks he hits harder then cheato trinidad. Cotto doesn't have to wrap his tape alot to try and cheat like cheato trinidad. Now some cheato trinidad fan will bring up cottos low blows, but cottos low blows probably could have been accidental since he is a devastating body puncher so mistakes do happen.
Well if you believe everything you read Tito hands were wrapped such a way that he had brass knukles in his gloves.....I think cotto is great and fun to watch his two best fights were over Mosely a close fun to watch fight and is loss to Margarito. If he can be compared to Tito he needs to fight some more proven fighters and win. For now Tito is still #1 in PR
i thought that was just a rumor.
