What do you guys think of this kid from the Cotto-Margarito undercard? His name is Bernabe Concepcion.
He just turned 20 a few months ago. He's 26-1 and his loss was when he was 16-17 yrs. old.
First time I've seen his fight. The Filipino prospects I've been following haven't turned out so well.
Rey Bautista got Boom Boomed the fuck out by Ponce de Leon.
A.J. Banal got Bazooka'd a few days ago.
What do you guys think of this kid? Opinions?
Just in Freddie Roach says Bernabe Concepcion even hits harder than Manny... and will move up in weight to gun for Luevano's title in October under Pavlik-Hopkins.
his name is Bernabe Concepcion
thats a funny name so i geuss he's a good prospect!
I see your point. Yuriorkis Gamboa is a weird name too...and he too is a good looking prospect. :boxing:
no. :)
Oh, because I heard a different story. They said he sparred with Bernard Hopkins when B-Hop was training with Roach and Concepcion floored B-Hop with a body punch. :crackhead
bernabe concepcion and freddie roach was sent by top rank to puerto rico to train with evangelista cotto's young fighters. he sparred and schooled many of the top puerto rican prospects at the gym from featherweight all the way to one light heavyweight. miguel was impressed at the super bantamweight's skills and decided to do spar with the kid a little. in a little friendly betting roach bet miguel $50k that he wouldn't be able to knock out abe. miguel accepted. they sparred for 4 rounds with no headgear and 8 ounce pro gloves on and miguel couldn't hurt the young kid and had to pay up.
true story.
OWS? MIGUEL COTTO wasn't able to hurt Bernabe Concepcion? You swear on your mom's grave that this is a true story?
:hitit:
Bernabe "will be knocked out silly because some people branded him as the next manny pacquiao" Concepcion :D
I doubt that because Bernabe Concepcion ain't from ALA. :boxing:

Bernabe Concepcion is the "Real Deal". Give him about a year fighting bums and put him up with an aging Rafael Marquez or a battle-worn Vasquez and see what happens. The dude is only 20, no need to rush him. Bautista and Banal were rushed and are probably damaged goods. Bernabe's punches are sharp and clean. He'll start KOing dudes all around 122 once he has more experience and grows his man-bones.
Abe Concepcion is the last of the next manny pacquiaos. been following him since his 3rd fight and I hope peeps stop comparing him to manny. He's from the northern part of pinas unlike the other 2 prospects from the south.
you can't compare bernabe to manny.
he's better than manny. :D

no monicker is much better.
these Pinoy prospects have such silly nicknames, seriously.
AJ "Bazooka" Banal - his last performance is an insult to the legendary Wilfredo Gomez...and the relentless Rafael Limon
Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista - Ray Mancini is the real Boom Boom!
Z "the Dream" Gorres - a Hakeem Olajuwon fanboy?
Florante "the Little Pacquiao" Condes - geez! :dunce:
:puke:
There was even this Ciso "el terrible" Morales...that one IS DEFINITELY an insult to Eric Moralez http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=yfKVD3FTbLA
I like the kid, but I don't like his nickname..."the real deal" is sooo Holyfield... we should find the guy a new monicker of something :boxing:

Shit! I just made a lengthy post about Concepcion in another thread. Oh well, here is what I said:
When I look at a prospect the first thing I look for, especially at lighter weights, is how well they move in the ring and how well they position themselves. Power and speed are nice to have, but if a boxer finds himself exposed after launching an attack, or if he struggles to take away his opponents offense with his own movement/ positioning, its a fairly safe bet that this is a fighter who is going to get tagged and is thus beatable.
I was tremendously impressed with Concepcion for exactly this reason. He exhibits a very rare ability to seemlessly integrate defensive movement with attack, seeming to slip his opponents punches and throw one of his own all in one movement. He also seems to have the ability to stay away from a lot of what his opponent does.
Now, the problem for a boxer with this sort of fluid style is that he tends to rely on it. He's naturally going to be off balance a lot of the time and had better have a heap of talent and be an excellent decision maker if its going to work for him at the highest level, either that or have an excellent chin! We won't know if Concepcion has either until we see him in with some better opposition. I must admit I'l always have my doubts about someone nicknamed "The Real Deal" before he's done anything of note. I mean who are they trying to convince, us or themselves? For now its safe to say, I think that at the very least, Concepcion is going to be an excellent boxer to watch.
How his career will play out in the long run, I have no idea. It might be that he'll succumb to the "curse of the gifted" and that a fighter like Andre Dirrell might go further with a more orthodox style complimented by his excellent speed. Sometimes too much talent is a negative and limitations can turn you into a better fighter, but in Concepcion's favour is that a lot of his talent seems to lie in out and out boxing ability, in that he moves well as well as having the athletic gifts of speed and power. I am looking forward to watching him, as I am with Dirrell and Danny Jacobs too.
