I would really like to know how Cotto wins a rematch, I hear that he is quick and fast better boxer etc. Why couldn't he do it last night? Because Margarito wouldn't stop coming. Cotto doesn't have the mental capacity to handle being the weaker fighter. He tried to win on points but Margarito's consistent body attack slowed Cotto enough. Cotto fought the fight of his life and couldn't get away.
How does he win seriously? How does he neutralize Margarito for an entire fight? He isn't going to be stopped by Cotto's fire power. I could understand somewhat if Margarito didn't throw such an outrageous number of power punches but he always throws punches. Cotto would have to be on his bike to get away and I don't see that impressing anyone including the judges. I just don't see how Cotto could use that style because of the type of pressure Margarito puts on, he is constantly throwing punches. Cotto would lose again in my opinion, eventually Margarito will catch him again with his swarms of punches each round, he may not land clean but all I see is a repeat.
Well said, I am all for a rematch, I just don't know how Cotto will keep that animal off of him. It was a great fight, and nice talking to someone that actually analyzed the fight well vs. the "he hit his head hard" arguments I seem to end up in. Cotto is a very skilled fighter and would probably win any other fighter in the division including Williams. I think Margarito just has the style to beat him repeatedly by the end of 12, Cotto could win a 10 rounder though. Just like Williams has the attributes to beat Margarito once again.
I wouldn't mind seeing a rematch either but I'm not sure if Cotto should take one right away, sometime next year would probably be better him.
I agree, styles make fights.
Nice talking to you as well.
He did move to his left a lot, which is Margarito's right, I thought he did this primarily because he didn't want to get hit by Margarito's left uppercut, it nullified his hook a little but I think he was willing to nullify his hook to get away from the left uppercut and moving to his left does also help his jab so that could have been a factor as well.
It's true that Margarito could try and lean on Cotto when they are in a clinch but if Cotto is on the ropes and clinches Margarito, he could always use the ropes to lean on and then get out of there when the referee breaks them, I don't think he should clinch too much at the center of the ring because center ring should be where he can do his best work, although if he feels himself getting a bit uncomfortable with the situation, he should buy some times by clinching.
Margarito punching at all angles is very true, it's part of what makes him so dangerous.

try not to get caught up in a fight instead out box him when ever he tried to stop and fight marg caught him and tagged him
Definitely, once he slowed down, he tried to fight himself out of a few times which worked against him.
Great post, that is the first good answer I have heard.
I think that early events in the fight like Margarito's body shots in the first round deterred Cotto from wanting to stay within the grasp of Margarito's left hook to the body. If you watch he moves away towards Margarito's right(I'd say that is his stronger punch). This nullifies some of the power from Cotto's hook. Cotto tried to hold in the second and third round when he got dinged but Bayless was quick to say punch out. Bayless didn't seem to want to allow anything but a fight.
I also think that if he clinched Margarito that could be tiresome as Margarito could rest on Cotto, he is the bigger man. A tactic a lot of bigger fighters do to smaller quicker fighters, lean on them, make them hold them up. I am not saying Margarito would but that would nullify a lot of holding, resting on the other fighter.
Margarito also wings punches from weird angles he landed a lot of right hooks to the body as well as left hooks. Add some upper cuts. I think Margarito's power just was to much for Cotto, upper cuts and hooks were just getting him enough early to change what he wanted to do.
Clinching would be the main feature needed I'd say.

He would need to fight a perfect fight for 12 rounds.
More body shots, less wasted movement, more clinching whenever he feels uncomfrotable along the ropes or in close, less wasted punches and again more body shots.

your not aloud low blows and headbutts in the boxing ring but gayweather still enjoys dishing them out ...

I didn't see Cotto even attempt to clinch that much, the first time he clinched was probably the 7th round when he was hurt, he should have started clinching much earlier to conserve energy and I didn't hear Bayless jump on him too early for clinches.
The punches he chose were to the head, he didn't pick his spots to the body which was a huge mistake and a waste of energy because he should have known he wouldn't have been able to knock out Margarito like that, he landed very few meaningful body punches on Margarito.
Some of the movement was wasted because he could have clinched instead of moving away and sometimes moving away caused him to get hit but yes, his gameplan was to move and not let Margarito get set, he just needs to learn how to clinch when he needs to save some energy.
He put in a very good performance, a performance that probably would have beaten anyone else in the division but he neglected Margarito's body, which was a terrible mistake, the way to slow down a guy with a high punch to move and not let his feet get set and work his body so that he can't throw so many punches, Cotto managed to do the first part well but the second part, he totally forgot about.
Cotto's bread and butter had been his body work up until this point (apart from the Mosley fight, where he body work was neutralized), Margarito was open to body shots but Cotto didn't take advantage of that.
Margarito on the other hand, invested in the body early, he landed some big shots to the body as early as the second round, which paid off for him as the fight went on.
And also, I think Cotto should try from time to time to stay inside Margarito's punches, I know it puts him in danger of the uppercut but it nullifies a lot of Margarito's arsenal.
One other thing, he can't let his back touch the ropes and if he does get trapped on the ropes, clinch his way out, don't try to punch his way out.

he'd Have To Enter The Ring Like This:

Bwahahahahahahahaha!!!!!
if cotto is going to win, he may not get respect from some dumb boxing fans.hed have to put on his track shoes more and clinch more..get his stamina up more and other that, everything else was good..
Well the ref wouldn't allow Cotto to clinch, I was expecting to see it more. Cotto doesn't really know how against a fighter like Margarito that is moving his hands to much to grapple on. Cotto is a very skilled fighter way more talented then Margarito, but I just can't see Cotto beating him. Cotto did everything in his power to stay away and punch clean, and he did, but Margarito still got to him because of his heart, chin, power and relentlessness. How would this change. Cotto couldn't stay away from Margarito for 12 rounds, I think Margarito does his early body attack again(this time from the first round on) and breaks him down this time ruining him.
With the same movement and combinations he used last night, supplemented with a sustained body attack. For whatever reason, he was mostly a head hunter. Smartly, Margarito put his early body work in and this is what left Cotto lifeless in the end.
Cotto can win if he stays off the ropes, prepares his stamina better, boxes in the center of the ring and hammers the body at all times, those upercuts he threw would have been better thrown to the stomach than to the chin. The rematch he'll win it by UD.
Bayless never allowed Cotto to clinch, he made it a fight, Cotto tried and Bayless said shit before he had a chance. So if it was a different ref yeah that is a possibility. But Cotto had to take body shots to give them see round 2. He wasn't comfortable and Margarito's body shots were bothersome to Cotto. I would say Cotto chose his punches very well and IMO if he didn't do those dances he would have been beaten up sooner, he was trying not to allow Margarito to set(at least that is what I saw).
I thought Cotto fought a very intelligent fight, an amazing performance, I keep saying it because he put on a clinic for the first 5 rounds minus the second. He was brilliant, Margarito was just relentless, Cotto couldn't get away. His stamina was good but Margarito beat on his body in the second and landed some potent ones in the first as well. This made Cotto realize that if he stood in front of him he would get hit, so he tried to box, unfortunately that is difficult with a volume puncher with power. Especially now that we know your will can be broke and your Chin isn't the best.

i definitely think he can beat him...i just dont think he trained hard enough...he under-estimated margo!! cotto is clearly the better boxer as he proved over the 1st 7 rounds or so...but margo (and fair play to him) kept on coming....if margo didnt have that iron chin i reckon that fight was over after 9 rounds!
I think the "if he didn't have chin" is an invalid argument as Margarito obviously does have an amazing chin. I thought Cotto was only up one round after the 7th. He was choosing spots wisely but still taking the worse punishment. Margarito beat the stamina out of him with body shots. Cotto's skill isn't being questioned, nor his stamina. I am questioning how Cotto stops Margarito from coming enough to deter the judges from scoring for the higher output more aggressive fighter that was never hurt. Cotto isn't flashy enough to be a Sweet Pea, he won't embarrass fighters like Sweet Pea. Plus the output how do you prove you are the better fighter when you aren't willing to throw as often, because you can't.
Cotto fought like a man in this fight. If he has to reduce himself to holding and hitting this time around, why even bother. He doesn't need Margo again and I don't think he wants him after last night. Cotto lost fare and square.
He would need to fight a perfect fight for 12 rounds.

With a granite chin, Margarito was a train and wouldn't stop coming.
I especially think that now we know Cotto's will can be broke and his Chin isn't the best.
