Now that Joe Calzaghe has dumped Frank Warren, I've seen a few posts saying that Joe's behaviour is a bit shady, since Warren has made Joe so much money over the years. I agree it is a bit shady by Joe, but it got me thinking:
Is it really fair to say that the promoter makes the fighter money? Since promoters get rich off boxing without ever taking a punch, is it not the other way around, with the boxer making money for the promoter?
I don't know. What do you think?
OK, so the promoter maximises the earning potential of the fighter, thats cool. But it still remains that without the boxer there would be nothing to promote.
In effect a promoter is really an employee of the boxer, an agent if you will who gets a cut for putting the boxer in good matchups.
I suppose at the end of the day its a symbiotic relationship, with both being neccessary to each other.
the goal of every boxer is to become too big for a promoter. all the greats eventually do. once you have solidified your name, you don't need a promoter telling people you're good because you already know you are.
