Team Pavlik “Irritated” By Hopkins

So it looks like October 18 is going to be date of the showdown between reigning Middleweight kingpin Kelly Pavlik and living legend Bernard Hopkins. Surely this will be a very interesting clash of two very different styles and personalities. In Pavlik you have the low-key, humble and classy wrecking machine and Hopkins is the grand master of smart box/punching, defensive wizardry and psychological warfare.
How will Pavlik handle the “anything goes” pre-fight hype shenanigans of Hopkins? How will Hopkins attempt to nullify the devastating power, confidence and momentum of the thrashing ring killer from Youngstown, Ohio?
When Hopkins made the “I will never lose to a whiteboy” comment before the Joe Calzaghe fight, many ring observers were offended and annoyed, including Jack Loew and Pavlik himself.
“Some of the comments that Hopkins made irritated a lot of people, and it irritated me, and it irritated Kelly,” said Loew to *************.com not long after Hopkins said them. “He wants to play the race card. Yeah, I know he wants to build up the fight and everything but that doesn’t sit well with a lot of people. If we would have said it we would have been crucified.”
Now respected as one of the best trainers in America, Loew, who has shown the refreshing quality to tell it like it is rather than biting his tongue and shunning controversy, thought Calzaghe was the better man for how he handled the lack of class shown by Hopkins. When the two gladiators warred with their words in the media back and forth, Loew says Calzaghe more impressed him. “(When Joe responded back to Hopkins in the media) he says it with class. He says it with class, he says it the right way. That’s what I like about him. I really do.”
Middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik sized up Hopkins vs. Calzaghe with just about 100% accuracy. His pre-fight prediction shows he is a very astute student of the game: “I just think Calzaghe’s output, variety of punches and his aggressive style and awkwardness might be a lot for Bernard to handle. But then again, Bernard with his right hand, and the way he can just tie up and frustrate people. So the only thing - I see it as a slight favorite for Calzaghe - is the fact that when Hopkins grabs, the people are still gonna see who the aggressor is. It will be Calzaghe.”
It will be very interesting to see if Bernard Hopkins will attempt to play the race card again and risk giving Kelly Pavlik any extra incentive to knock his block off. Pavlik is a much more physically violent fighter than Calzaghe and any kind of emotional insults could make him even more potent and dangerous.
So far we have never seen Pavlik in a maximum state of rage and fury. It remains to be seen if the smooth talking Philadelphian will attempt to irritate and light the fire of Kelly Pavlik.
Personally I think Jack Loew needs to learn how to keep his mouth shut. It's not like this guy is some boxing wizard, he's had one good fighter his entire lifetime.
I like Pavlik but he should really tell his trainer to stick to training and stop popping off. If someone wants to criticize and talk shit it should be the fighters themselves because ultimately they are the ones who have to get in the ring.
yes
they're still talking about that comment? That was pre-calzaghe fight in 2007. Get with the times
and yes.
I really wish Jack would stop speaking o/b/o Pavlik, because all he's doing is using his fighters name to have his own opinions heard. Kelly already has the best manager in the game in Cameron Dunkin, who knows when to talk, and when to sit back and let his fighter take command of the stage.
Jack needs to follow Cam's lead and just stick to his day job already. Though in fairness, he's not the only trainer talking more than he needs to, not by a long shot
This is a risky fight for Pavlik and he shouldn't take it. He has everything to lose becuase if he were to beat Hopkins by another close decision( which is most likely going to be the case) then people will just tell him to jump in the club along with Taylor and Calzaghe, who also did that. If he loss, then he would really get bashed by the media and give Calzaghe a reason to not fight him. The only way he would gain anything is if he was to do something that has never been done before, which is to blow Hopkins out.
i love bernard hopkins, because in addition to his aggressive, non-stop pressure style that wields non-stop excitement, he is really well-read and well-spoken. an eloquent, well-mannered elder statesman of the game!
Kelly Pavlik: I will never vote for a Black man
So he endorsed Hillary Clinton and all the bible clinging, blue collar americans were from Ohio were with him.
.....................Really... :puke:

i think people have every right to be offended mainly because of the double standard that there is in america. if Pavlik or Joe would have said i will never lose to a black can you imagine the outrage that would have happened here in the US? Jesse Jackson and co. would have had him crucified!
Double standards do exist son! I do agree:grumpy:
Pavlik has to be careful to not fight with too much emotion, it leads to mistakes which results in losses so he should just do what always does, he can't let Hopkins get too far under his skin.
That "I will never lose to a whiteboy" comment was fucking hilarious and the only thing funnier is how everyone acted offended by it because they didn't know a better way to deal with it.

I think White boy Pavlik will finally retire Bopkins. But I do see ol Hopkins knocking pavlik down once like he did Calz then getting worked for 11 rounds and complaining about it to good ol larry merchant and saying he displayed a (like hopkins says) boo full display of boxing. I have Pavlik all day then he can move on to destroying Ol Joe in Wales!! in 09
This stuff bores me to be honest. It isn't really real news its just hype for a fight, delivered either via an interview or by a press release from a fighters camp. It reminds me a bit of WWE, manufacturing a (very boring) story where really there isn't one.

If Calzaghe would have said "I will never lose to a Negro!"
There would have been outrage..

Calzaghe took it well didnt he? What better way to deal with it to then to go on and beat him?
