Many people have not seen a prime in shape Toney before and the are going by what they currently see him do at heavyweight. I look at a fighter's entire career before making by jugements. Here is a clip on prime Toney at his best against one of the greatest fighters of all time as well. Mike '' the body snatcher'' Mccullum.
James Toney is absolutely nowhere near as skilled as Floyd Mayweather, nowhere even close. He is a good boxer but those hyping his technical skill are overexaggerating the case. He had a natural defensive talent and was a considerable badass who knew how to get the job done, but he wasn't a genius boxer.
As for who is 'greater' you can make the case either way. Toney achieved much in his career, going from MW to HW with very few losses and plenty of titles. In doing so, he fought really quite a lot of good competition, but fewer genuinely great opponents than is often made out.
The standard of Mayweather's resume is not that different, just like Toney it has titles at multiple weight classes, it just has fewer fights on it and an 0. If anything I'd say that the average standard of Mayweather's competition is better than Toney's is, if we consider their careers as a whole.
He is an all around more complete fighter IMO but slightly. If Mayweather loss his speed and reflexes, then his career would be over becuase his style depends on that. Toney was the better thinker, better counter puncher, FAR better inside fighter and has more punchning power.Toney has already moved up in weight, loss most of his speed and he is still a genius that he is competing at heavyweight and even won a heavyweight title. Roy Jones and Bob Fitszimmons are the only ones in history that accomplished that and many people are looking past it. He also fought the best opposition and beat most of them. Who on Mayweather's resume was better than a prime unbeaten Michael Nunn? Who was number one pound for pound at the time?
You said it yourself, If anyone is to blame here its Toney himself for his lack of discipline, and this will be the reason Floyd will be remembered as the greater fighter. People remember you more for who you beat, not just who you fight. Floyd wouldn't struggle against complete unknowns like Tiberi and Thadzi, nor would he take steroids. Toney was being outboxed by Michael Nunn before the stoppage, not that its anything bad because Nunn was a good fighter, but Nunn was a round away from beating Toney before the stoppage. Also Hasim Rahman is known as the worst titlist of the HW Division and Toney struggled against him in the first fight too. Sanderline Williams ring a bell? Your basically trying to convince people that Toney will be remember as the greater fighter, when the truth is he wont, This website is known as the Floyd Mayweather hate forum, but even the poll indicates something else. Toney also has won legit world titles at 160, 168 and 175, I dont count IBU or IBA titles.
Since when does someone's performance in a fight effect their legacy? Nunn is an all time great and was pound for pound the best fighter in the world at the time. The fight was also not as one sided as you and many other people make it seem. Toney was starting to close the gap and even from the begining of the fight, he was clearly landing the more effective blows when he stopped a gassed out Nunn. I ACTUALLY watch these fights instead of just looking on boxrec and going off of other's gossip and lies.
You are also criticizing what Toney did at heavyweight, which is laughable considering Toney is a middleweight and fighting in a division that he was not expected to do well at thought of as being overmatched. Do you see Mayweather moving up to middleweight and beating Pavlik? I sure don't.
You just stated that people will remember you for you beat, so considering Toney not only fought but beaten the better line of fighters, then why would Toney not be the greater fighter according to you? We can size up their resume's if you want to and it will prove that he fought the better fighters.

To me the answer to the question is to be found in how the two are already regarded, and for me that means Mayweather is already considered the greater of the two, and I don't see how anything that happens in the future could possibly change that.
Floyd wouldn't lose to someone like Drake Thadzi or barely beat Dave Tiberi. I like James Toney a lot but this is a a no brainer.
That could possibly have something to do with the fact that Toney took risks and fought fighters that he didn't have to, even risking his pound for pound status. When Mayweather fought a lesser opponent in Boldimer, he boxed cautiously to avoid criticism. Toney never cared. The main thing was that Toney was his worst enemy by not coming in shape and draining himself at the last minute. I personally would prefer to look bad against lesser opposition and accomplish as much or even more than Mayweather, then to be criticized for not fighting the best and retire on that note. Again i am a Mayweather fan, but its just facts.
Its funny because Sweet Pea(who also has an account on this forum) and many other people that came here from ESB said that they were banned as well. I'm sure i would have been too if i logged in as regularly. I only log in over there about once a month.
yeah a lot of esb guys are here.
they all say the same thing about not knowing what they got banned for.
that's what i think too.
you know how i am. i make little jokes but i don't get racial or curse or anything like that.
i think a mod just didn't like me......

the last time they banned me was because i did a "Ali at 64 vs. Haye at 28" it was a parody thread of this guy who pissed me off 'cause he was trying to compare 1964 Ali with 2008 Haye.
i like haye but don't compare him to ali......
everybody loved the thread. it was like 20 to 1 the votes for the 64 yr. old ali. ha ha ha then i got banned.

My username is still slicksouthpaw16 over there and i have Chad Dawson in my avatar.
Floyd never took roids...and in the ring EVERYTHING Toney does..Floyd does better........
Floyd also accoplished more...easy vote for Floyd.
Floyd definitely has not accomplished more than Toney. Both were champions in 5 different weight divisions, however Toney has not only fought but has beaten the better fighters.
Also, why does people bring up steroids? I wonder what the hell that has to do with someone's legacy(no offense)? Especially since Toney was still fat and the steroids didn't show.

He did a few thing better than Toney but Toney did a few things better than him, skillwise they're about even.
Why did they ban you? lol, i have been in heated arguments with Sweet pea and Robbi from ESB and i have never been banned, even though them two tried their best.

Hmmm, I agree. James Toney at his best, in my opinion anyway, is a much better fighter than Mayweather could be. It was a pity he had to fight Jones Jr though as, at that stage, Jones could have beaten anyone. Mayweather is undefeated and that does count for something, but, then again he didn't have to fight a Jones Jr did he?:lol1: Some might even say he could have beaten Jones, but, he has never even fought anyone close to the skill of Nunn, Johnson, McCallum etc. We'll never know, whereas for Toney we do know truly good he is.
Nonetheless, the losses and bad fights here and there, sadly, do count against him. Some people take losses into account much more than they should and not the fact that he has always come back from his losses to do what no one thought he could ever do again. That counts a lot for me. It really does take an amazing fighter to get back up after the losses he had.
My personal opinion is that Toney is the better fighter and for me I do consider him as being greater, even if Mayweather came back and beat Cotto, all around.
But, if you look purely at the records etc and how things are considered these day then nearly everyone will choose Mayweather because he is unbeaten. You could talk about consistency also. Mayweather didn't fight every month when he was champion though either did he? Nor, when he moved up, did he take the hardest possible fight available immediately. So, it's hard to say. I could go with Mayweather on his supposed consistency, but I don't actually consider him to be that consistent as he hardly fought much when it comes down to it. I think you have to take into account just how much Toney did fight as a champion. It's unheard of for contemporary fighters and he was, at some stage, going to have a bad run from fighting so much.
Nonetheless, he has always beaten the top fighters in his weight class. That to me is consistency. Whether or not he had a bad fight every now and then doesn't really matter overly much for me as he always came back from it. I find that very important.
I personally find Toney to be the epitome of a truly great fighter. Fights every possible opponent and champion no matter what. Comes back to great form after losses. Has never really been beaten. Jones beat him of course, but I mean beaten. He's great. Amazing fighter.
As for the poll, I don't know. I think I'll wait to see of Mayweather does come back. Otherwise it's Toney for me.
Good post fella, i agree with the entire thing.
Also id like to add, i havent voted in the poll coz i think Toney is better but Floyd will be rememberd as the better of the two
i agree with you. toney is one of the best fighters of this generation.
esb is crap though.
any forum that bans me 3-4 times is crap! lol
esb is terrible. they already unbanned me months ago and i never even bothered with it anymore......

East-Side boxing is a more knowledgeable forum. You can make a case for Mayweather being greater, but a total landslide by over 30 votes? It makes no sense. What has Mayweather done in his career that Toney hasn't besides retire unbeaten and being more consistant? The fact that Toney fought the best makes up for that.

we need more votes for james.
the fact that it's a landslide for floyd jr. is an embarassment to this forum.

Yeah I know all this. I still would not place James higher than Floyd in all time p4p rankings.
i think his skills are up there with floyd.
he just can't control his weight.
tua...... toney...... trinidad...... pacquiao......
all my guys have problems with their weight!!! lol
