Let me paint the picture.
Let's say the fight is one of, if not the biggest fight of your career. Let's say it's against a TRULY great opponent.
Now, if you win, you win a boring ass fight not hardly anyone will remember. Makes people actually hate both fighters involved for a substatually long period of time.
If you lose, it's in one of those classic type fights that you call people up and talk about the fight with. It's on that level.
Regardless, the fight is close/competitive.
SOOOOO, would you rather win a dull fight or lose a great fight?
Vote. Discuss.
Not right after the fight. Shit, I doubt either man TRULY felt great RIGHT AFTER the fight.
My point is, in the long run, a loss CAN be better for you if it was an exciting one. A dull win can sometimes hurt your career, ask Andre Dirrell.
It's not always like that, but look at it this way. After Castillo lost, his next fight was on PPV, with the rematch. So, the world isn't ALWAYS so black and white.
Just like Margarito's loss to Williams was a blessing in disguise, as well as Taylor's consecutive losses to the Pav.
Yea, but you're not Corrales. May he RIP, but I doubt you'd be saying "wow, what a great fight I lost" if you had been him.

I'll never forget that Castillo was Corrales' best fight.
So, there's that.

The point of boxing is to win. Granted you may not get the notoriety you're looking for, but a win is a win. Also, depending who you fight helps make the difference on what kind of outcome you're going to have.
I agree that the objective of being in the sport is to win, but sometimes an exciting toe to toe brawl in which u lose, might be a better investment than a boring win. The fans will still want to see a fighter that is known to go balls to the wall in his fights whether he wins or loses. Same cant be said for a safety first/defensive fighter who tends to win in boring fashion time after time.

Mayorga loses in exciting fashion, yet still headlines ppv's and recieves handsome paydays. Winky wins in booooooring fashion, yet cant even land a fight on espn.
With that said, i'd rather lose a close, tough fight were both of us fought our hearts out, and the crowd is giving us a standing ovation afterwards, rather than win in a coma inducing fashion ala Floyd over Baldomir, or Wlad over Ibragimov.
We are not talking about PPV sales now are we. Taking about winning dull fight or losing in a fight. Who would you be Hatton losing to Mayweather or Mayweather beating Oscar.
'I would win a dull fight, because you will be guaranteed a next fight with more money.'
That's what I was referring to, now wasn't I?
MY point in THIS thread was to talk about the fight, but then you brought in your reasoning for your choice. Which is what I questioned.
And for the record, Hatton-Mayweather was a really good fight, it wasn't a GREAT fight. You compare that fight to other GREAT fights and it doesn't stand up. Not a bad fight at all, but 'really good' isn't 'great'.
For the record, I haven't voted and I'm not taking any side. I'm just pointing out certain differences in opinions I have with BOTH sides arguments.
I would win a dull fight, because you will be guaranteed a next fight with more money. Would Hatton win a dull fight against Mayweather and have kept his 0 or lost to Mayweather in a great fight in which he did. Think about you were fighting for a world championship. Wladimir wins dull fights and is undisputed heavyweight champion.
He also has headlined a whopping ZERO PPVs in America, to the best of my recollection.
this is a stupid question... if your involved with boxing, or any sport for that matter, and you'd rather lose than win.. i suggest you find somthing else to do!@
look at it this way , after losing to casamayor , katsidis got a big fight with juan diaz who also lost.
what big fights did raheem get after his borefest win over erik morales?
I'm glad you used diego as an example.
Castillo lost one of the greatest fights ever. When they asked JLC about it, he was kicking himself for a bad fight plan and for engaging so much.
I never - EVER - hear a loser in a great fight compliment himself. Or be happy about it. He always says 'I should have fought smarter'...
Only a loser is happy about losing.
Of course you are not gonna be happy about losing but I'd rather be remembered for giving it my all then running like a bitch and winning like Mayweather did against Baldomir.
Hey so and so lost the fight. yeah I know but he did what he could and fought his heart out!
over
Hey he won the fight!! Yeah, I know but he ran all night and it was fucking boring!!
I'd rather chose the first.
I was answering a specific question/example about hagler...and now you use an example where Hagler didn't even win??
Well done. Thanks for the softball over the middle. This example illustrates EXACTLY my position. Hagler was so upset about losing this fight, that he left the sport, and is still pissed about it to this day.
LOL. Had nothing to do with the fact that he thought he got robbed? Or that he was beginning to slip as is?
What you hear is "I wasn't my best tonight. i should have done this or that. but I thank god that I came through and I still came out win the win".
And, I hear fans give him a lot more shit than that. Which, ultimately can control his destiny a lot more than that fighter can.
We are?
In which fights that Hagler won can his opponents make a case for winning? Thanks in advance for your list.
First of all, when I started the thread, I didn't mention Marvin Hagler.
The topic of this thread, was about close fights, but one was dull and the other was exciting. Both, however, were either close or competitive.
As for the list...
Vito Antuofermo, in the first fight.
Ray Leonard (regardless of the outcome).
Bobby Watts
You're welcome.

Perhaps, but I hear PLENTY of times when someone wins a dull fight, and are even harder on themselves.
How many guys lost to Hagler? how many guys took Hatton to school?
Which is the more exclusive club?
We're talking about fights in which both fighters could make a case for winning, whether the fight was boring or exciting.
So, honestly, neither of those 'clubs' would count for much within this discussion.
