Calzaghe a great of his era - Jones

I have little respect for a champ that avoided fight two of the best pound for pound fighters till they are past their prime. He had one ahead a weight division and one behind a weight division. He was so admissible, that when they talked about good fights from 160 to 175 Cal was not brought up. Hopkins and RJJ were, two guys that put offers out to Cal. Cal wouldn't fight them for price when in reality you have to take the risk and show confidence in your ability to become a superstar. Instead he waited till they were past prime and had losses. Cal is a solid fighter and a good man but an overrated fighter, hard to swallow but you have to some day. So if you're consistent I presume you have little or no respect for Roy Jones, who managed not to fight Chris Eubank, Nigel Benn, Steve Collins, Young Calzaghe or Darius M. Just saying...

The next day Hopkins decided he wanted double the money despite not being a particularly big name at the time (2002). Do you seriously think Calzaghe should have accepted this? Hopkins was either bluffing or considered Calzaghe so highly that he wouldn't risk the fight without an absolute mega payday. As for your claim that Jones offered Calzaghe a fight; I say bullshit. What I have put above is factual with a source to back it up, what you said has been conjured out of thin air by your imagination in a desperate attempt to make your argument work. First rule of argument: Make your argument fit around the facts, not the other way around. If you had a choice between A) giving up your title, fighting two or three ranking fights for even a slither of a chance at a fight with Jones for a low payday or B) trying to make yourself a big name at your own division to force the fight at a fair price, what would you have done?

Ok foot in my mouth! I still don't see the greatness you give the gentlemen. I still think that Cal could have tried a bit harder to stick himself in the mix, instead everyone had to come to him. He was not the name fighter, that is fact. Hop and Jones proved more unfortunately for you. He has never really been the fighter of the year. His opposition has never really been incredible and he never once put himself out there to send out viewable challenges, he wasn't actively trying to become the best and most well known fighter. This thread's like deja vu. ''Calzaghe ducking'' ''Calzaghe ducked B-Hop and prime Roy) all of that's pretty much irelevent now as Roy and Joe will fight and that's all that matters. Roy embracing Joe and giving him respect for being the best of this era, which is fair IMO. Joe has huge respect for Roy who is a one of the legends of this sport. This fight is between two fighters who have respect for each other and will let the fighting do the talking and not thier mouths IMO Can't wait for these two to get it on, it's taken too long to happen.

Hopkins made an offer to Calzaghe, where's details and source on this? It's widely understood a deal was done, and Hopkins last minute doubled his price to get out of it. Roy Jones offered Calzaghe a deal? First time anyones heard that, where's the details and source on that? So even that excuse is ruined. Next excuse? Every fighter ever and out there has faced all the top competition have they, or even most? No. Get a grip on reality.

You guys are digging WAY too deep with this calzaghe shit. but floyd mayweather gets hated to pieces here at boxingscene. calzaghe beat a washed up chris eubank, then he beats lacy, kessler, manfredo and finally an aged hopkins(and even that win was highly questionable). granted, joe calzaghe is damn good fighter and though i've never met him, i'm sure that he's also a good sport. but damn, y'all hate on floyd mayweather tremendously, when the level of opposition that he's fought is extremely better than calzaghe's, not only that, he moved up in weight on several ocassions to beat champions and win championships!!!

A prime Roy Jones could fight this ALSO old version of Calzaghe every single day for a million year and never knock him out in the first round. Get a grip. I know that, and you know that, but what im saying is that if he were to hype the fight in a manner as to suggest this, it would not be as profitable. People don't want to see a big name knock out a little name with ease, they want to see a hard fought bout, and they will buy a PPV easier if they believe they are getting this.

Didnt Mayweather do that with Hatton? And it ended up being the highest grossing non-Heavyweight, non-Oscar PPV ever? Yeah. It's called 24/7. And it's called Floyd Mayweather's image. Roy Jones has NEVER been like that.
