WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe has stated that his September 20 light heavyweight bout against Roy Jones Jr. will not be his last and that he plans to return to the super middleweight division following that fight. In a fax sent to WBO President Paco Valcarcel on British Boxing Board of Control letterhead dated July 16, 2008, and signed by Joe, the longtime 168lb champion wrote:
Dear Paco,
Further to our phone conversation of today's date I wish to remain as the WBO's Super Middleweight Champion. Following my proposed contest against Roy Jones Jnr. it is my intention to defend the WBO Super Middleweight Championship. I am proud to be a WBO Champion and thank you, as always, for the opportunities given to me in the past.
Kind regards,
JOE CALZAGHE CBE
What do you guys make of this? A rematch with Kessler or a fight with Pavlik?
Edit: I just remembered Pavlik, it's late here, my mind is working in slow motion.
It's on fightnews before anyone asks for a source.
Pavlik did beat JT afterall. Pavlik is also p4p rated. It would quite be possibly JCs best win. Lacy and then kessler. You wouldnt think he could top that. But then he beats BH and hopefully RJJ.
Lets wait until after the RJJ fight and then we will know what JCs plans are. He may decide to retire. WHo knows? Or take a short break and recharge the batteries and come back for one last fight.
I think Joe is just keeping his options open. If he decides to stay at 175 or retire, what are they going to do to him?
I agree with both of you, he's probably just keeping his choices open for a fight with Pavlik at 168, hopefully it happens.
His gonna go the Kelly pavlic route me thinks..
And what that would do for Joe by beating Jones Jnr (Shot or not)
and coming back down to beat Pavlic would be Big Tings
if he can do it or not remains to be seen

Just to explain why I put Kessler there, it's because he's ranked as the number 1 contender for the WBO.
That means nothing. WBO doesn't require mandatories.
Calzaghe going out with wins over Kessler, Hopkins, Jones and Pavlik sounds good to me.
Granted IF he wins. I do agree it'll be a great way to go out IF that's the way things turn out.
A win over Pavlik in his last fight would definitely be a great way to go out.

It's definitely possible that the fans' reactions weren't what he expected it to be and he wants to go out on a high with the fans and the press.
Yea i could see it. I think Joe really wants to go down as a great, and the reception this fight got was terrible and it may have made him feel a Pavlik fight was a must.
If he fights Pavlik after Jones that will really mess up his senior citizen tour, I thought he'd go after Glen Johnson or Tarver once they hit 40, i dunno.
Be fair, Calzaghe is a senior citizen in boxing terms.
Maybe the backlash about the Jones fight did get to him and he decided he wants to fight Pavlik?
It is possible imo

Just keeping his options open.
If they HBO offer Calzaghe a load of money to fight Pavlik he'll take it.
He has to beat Jones though otherwise there is no Pavlik. Joe has always been about money which is why he didn't pull his pants down and get raped by accepting peanuts to fight top Americans though in fairness there weren't that many. I'd be interested to see Joe's biggest paycheck I bet the Mario Veit rematch is about three times what he got for abusing Jeff Lacy.

I'm sorry but not schocked. To bad JoeC won't retire after RJJ.
This can only mean one thing: Kelly Pavlik is up next! JoeC said he would never fight Kessler again.
He has been complaining about struggling to make 168 for a while now, maybe he really wants a fight with Pavlik.

If Joe plans on goin back to 168 after comfortably making 175 twice, he's going to realize it's gunna suck even more losing that extra 7 lbs.
Plus, didn't Roy want to fight at 168? If you ask me, they should have, both guys struggle to make the weight, but Roy wanted to make HISTORY.

And I agree, Calzaghe-Jones should be at 168.

Yeah I think the fight should have been at 168.
