i.e when the light heavys fought on showtime and hbo had cotto/gomez, or pavlik/lockett and the williams/quintana rematch. and theyre doin it again with klit/peter and mosley
especially when its not ppv and the fans aren't paying extra, why would showtime or hbo do that? if they had their own day then they'd get all boxing fans watchin instead of half or whatever
Its bad for boxing and its fans. But really nobody cares about the good of the sport.
Its a HBO tactic known in the business side of boxing. I forget the exact number but HBO is in MILLIONS of more homes than Showtime. No matter what any HBO boxing draws much more than Showtime. So HBO is really starting to take advantage.
You guys remember that old Showtime saying "The first Saturday of every month". What ever happend to that? Like this big duel when have coming up on OCT. 11th. Thats the second sat. of the month.
Moral victory..yes. Still dont see how you would consider it good business to host 2 fight cards on the same night, on different networks.
Their objective is competing on an equal level as HBO. You can be sure the best interest of boxing is the last thing on their mind.
If Showtime ever drew an equal or better rating than HBO, they'd consider it a major victory.

Would you mind explaining how this is good business for either cable network? It splits the fans/viewers. There is absolutely no way that they would recieve more viewers by showing fights on the same day, than they would if they alternated.

Showtime usually starts at 9 when this happens, and HBO starts at 10,so Ill watch Showtime until 10, then I record the rest, and watch HBO live.
Same here. People with DVR's don't really sweat it. But it is annoying if there are NO fights on the following Saturday.
but you lose millions of viewers by doin it simultaneously

It actually works out for me. I live in California and with DirectTV and all the channels I have (HBO, HBO2, HBOW, HBO2W, SHO, SHO2, SHOW) I can actually watch one right after the other. For example I saw Margarito/Cintron and Cotto/Gomez on HBO from 7-9 and then Dawson/Johnson and Tarver/Woods from 9-11 on Showtime. It was like a free pay-per-view. Even though I left about 4 rounds into the Tarver fight because it was putting me to sleep.
I dont agree with how they do that...
I dont have shotime anymore so i dont have a choice as to which one i will watch...i will be watching HBO...and come online and watch videos of the fights on SHO that i missed.
But its crazy to be honest.
If they did do alternating saturdays and SHARED the fans they would be maximizing profits ALL THE TIME...because on one saturday ALL (well not ALL but you know what i mean) boxing fans tune into say HBO...then next saturday ALL boxing fans tune into SHO...and on and on...
When they do it like this they have compete and it hurts both networks...
it irritates me (well it did when i had SHO) but if these guys make huge salarys and cant make decent decisions they should hire members of boxingscene who would do a better job as far as i can tell.
smart posters here...i love this forum...
Because, even for casinos it's best to have fights on Saturday... just makes more sense....it would be good though if one was after the other.....they don't BOTH have to be at 11o'clock at night
and this makes sense how?
if im showtime and red bull is sponsering me, do you think theyre gonna care that my rival is losing viewers as well?
It makes sense if you feel you have the better product. For example, Showtime scheduling the double header to compete with Mosley/Mayorga.
They had previously had an tacit agreement and one had the 1st and 3rd saturdays of the month the other had the 2nd and 4th saturdays of the month.
HBO in order to put further strain on the lower budgeted Showtime started going into dates that were traditionally Showtimes. Its bad for boxing in general.
i see, thanks
