13 lbs difference between Paul Williams at 147 and Kelly Pavlik at 160.
15 lbs difference between Kelly Pavlik at 160 and Joe Calzaghe at 175.
And people think Pavlik is ready for Calzaghe?
pavlik is a strong middleweight who only plans to stay awhile
he's beaten miranda and types who hit way harder than calzaghe
and have gone on to fight at SMW
he's taller reach advantage etc
calzaghe has only ever fought once at LHW... against hopkins
who isn't a natural light heavy..
unlike williams fighting pavlik, pavlik doesn't have to fear a huge difference in power.. actually pavlik would be the stronger man
size wise style wise the match up is fine
great post. Calzaghe couldnt go 12 rounds with a Jermaine Taylor
Pavlik naturally has the frame and the strength to be a light heavyweight, and Calzaghe had been a SMW his whole career, so it's really not the same thing at all.
A ridiculous, pointless fight. Okay Williams has a massive frame, but he's got lots of options at WW and Pavlik has plenty at MW or SMW. This fight is just promoters getting out of control.
Exactly what has Williams done to get a shot at the current MW champion? Tsk.
What options does Williams have that are so great at 147? None of the other top welterweights are interested or even available to fight him. Why not take a chance at a weight he may be more comfortable at when he still has his title if he fails? If he even puts up a credible fight it is a good move for Williams.
If williams fights Pavlik is a HUGE mistake and I've been saying all along that pavlik shouldn't fight Calzague in 175 either.
The problem with both is that they have plans on moving up for a "money" fight, then move back to their respective weights and you can't go as far a 2 divisions doing that...
REMEMBER ANTONIO TARVER?????
No people know hes ready for Calzaghe but Calzaghe is not ready for him.
He would give an alexis arguello type whoop ass on Calzaghe if they fought.

williams isn't even super strong at welter... not the same thing!!

He looked pretty strong and comfortable at 166, not sure if his power would carry up to 170 but it's definitely possible.
if you show significant power at 166 you will most likely be stronger at 170. Look at Pavlik hes a rail. If he fills out more and has more weight on his punches of course hes gonna be more powerful.

I think once Williams gets to 160, he'll never come down back to 147. Probably 154, but not 147, he'll just be killing himself like Jones did and we saw what happened to him after that (GOT KTFO).
So Im guessing the WBO strap will be vacated? Maybe Mosley jumps in and takes it?
Would the power carry 10-15 lbs up though?
He didn't look nearly as strong @ 166 against Taylor as he did in the first fight.
The one thing people need to be successful in moving up weight classes more than anything is speed. Floyd Mayweather, Sugar Ray Leonard and Roy Jones are just some examples of this. Unless you hit like Thomas Hearns, power isn't that much of an asset moving up in weight classes.

Pavlik is unproven at higher weights but he's exciting and can bang (not sure if he can still bang at 170) Joe said he wouldn't move down to 168 recently although he said he would much earlier than that.
Pavlik may not have earnt his shot but he's exciting and this a fight people want to see, the main problem I have is people critisizing fighters for being a champion and one weight then moving up in weight and being ranked highly by an organisation who say they deserve to have a crack at the top guy (see Haye, Taylor etc) Then go on to say Calzaghe is ducking him for a bigger money fight with RJJ in his last fight when Pavlik has never fought at 168 (166 was the Taylor-Pavlik II fight) or 175 and now deserves a go at the lineal 175 champion. I would like to see the fight no doubt but I dislike that people can critisize a fighter for moving up a weight class and immediatly having a crack and the champ and then blaming Calzaghe because he won't fight a guy that has to move up two ish weight classes to fight at a weight he's never fought at before and fighting the top guy.

It's not really the same situation either, according to reports the fight would have been at a catchweight of 170 pounds and it would have pitted the consensus number 1 middleweight in the world against the best at 168 and the lineal champion at 175.
Pavlik is also a power puncher who could carry the power up with him, Williams isn't really a power puncher even though the second Quintana fight was impressive but he relies on his height and volume punching something he shouldn't be able to do at 160 against Pavlik, Williams also isn't very physically strong, Pavlik is.
I don't think it's the same case. Williams has looked frail even at 147. See the later rounds of the Margarito fight, specially when Margarito landed those body punches. It looked like Antonio was going to break Paul in two.
Williams will be bullied at a higher weight class.
I think Pavlik can make the weight, but in the case he doesn't, I'm sure he won't be as out of his element as Paul Williams in a higher weight class.
LOL, good point I have to say. People are crying left right and centre that it's too early, and to small an amount of time for Williams to gain weight, and favour him to lose.
Yet exactly the same is the case of Pavlik, only more so, and it's hardly said at all. Convenient.
