EM was my favorite fighter and since he has been brought up so often I was wondering how you guys place him. He was a beast at 122 and no one could touch him(I still think he beat MAB in the first fight, fighting in spurts just doesn't do it for me). His right was like a safe, he destroyed fighters. Of the previous 10 fights before MAB only Wayne McCullough who had a great chin didn't get ko'd.
He was a champ at 21, but he did beat a old Zaragoza. He has a solid resume:
Espadas
Pacman
Jones
Barrera
Chi
Kelly(old)
Zaragoza(old)
Chavez
Ayala
Ramirez
Every single one of those fighters was a champ. And he has a W over all of them. Bueno was also a champ but not nearly as impressive. He also fought all challengers and won convincingly at the lower weight. I would argue that the MAB-EM wars took a lot from both fighters. EM was still solid but not quite as good following the first war.
Who would be a good match up regarding EM in his prime with some other greats, who would win and why. How good do you truly think Morales was at 122, 126, and 130? Obviously his best weight was 122, but he was very effective at all 3 weights.
Erik Morales is easily one of the greatest fighters to ever come out of Mexico and to me the most exciting one by far.
The guy was a beast in his prime. Simply the pace he carried was completely unequaled by any fighter of recent Memory. It was like he said just give me the names and I'll fight them.Tough as nails.
Hell over a period of about 10 years he fought a hectic pace of one bad dude after another. Conquering titles in 3 weight classes and fighting anyone who posed a threat (save JMM) and winning most of them while giving foty candidate after another. He always found a way to make a fight interesting he truly delivered every time.
You want to talk about excitement every time a fighter steps into the ring, that was Morales. The lower weight class blood and guts warrior that was fighting everyone one right after another while others were allowed lengthy breaks in between tough fights.
Obviously his demise came because of the hectic pace with the level of competition he carried, age, as well as lack of motivation, and trouble within his camp.
I think he would have flat out murdered JMM at 126 prime for prime.
The guy put together straight punching combos like no other.
lol that's why his fight with Pac was so intriguing. 1st one.
i wont go that far saying flat out murder juan, marquez aint no pushover, but i would greatly favor erik...
erik's straight punching is/was still evident even on pac-em 3, closing seconds of the second round, he was out punching/out hitting pac when both guys flurried, still intriguing on my point of view ... lol
kidding aside its a great fight that we missed to see EM-JMM at 126 :boxing:
Daniel Zaragoza may have been old but he was coming off two EXCELLENT performances, including a complete schooling of a prime Wayne McCullough. And Morales was a baby-faced kid who wore him down boxing smartly and put him away with a beautiful shot to the solar pexus.
In his prime, Morales was a great fighter. From 2001-2004, he was just incredible. Excellent boxing skills, threw good combinations, boxed well and fought with pride, intelligence and a Mexican's heart.
I thought I saw signs of slipping in the second fight against Barrera. You can tell when a fighter's getting old as it takes him longer and longer to get it going in the fight. The slow start caused him the decision but the way he outboxed Pacquiao was just beautiful. And also his last hurrah. Unless you think beating David Diaz (I thought he did) is an accomplishment.
Yeah EM I thought would have demolished Pac at 122 in his prime. Send him out on his ass. EM just was an amazing combination puncher and the way he just fought was awesome to watch. He was a complete fighter, skill, power, stamina, heart, footwork, intelligence, speed, etc.
I thought that David Diaz lost as well. At any which rate he just didn't have the same fight in him after the original Barrera war, it took something from him. He was still a very good fighter, but he wasn't the animal he was before.
Because my opinion is biased, I was wondering who else felt that way. I was re watching some of his pre Barrera fights, and he was just a technical machine, broke them down body to head. And finished them off. Great combinations.
I have a serious amount of respect for him, he gave every fan what they wanted and that is fight. He could have made a lot of fights a lot easier but he just wouldn't have been the fan favorite we know him for.
It didn't help him down the stretch of his career. And the fact that he would fight anyone, even after what he witnessed what Pac did to Barrera, he said fuck it I'll fight him. You have to love that.
yeah erik was the shit...i remember when he was at 122 or 126 and call out floyd mayweather. That dude wasnt afraid to fight anyone and was willing to go up a few classes to fight the best. I wish more boxers had that much heart and confidence in themselves.

Morales was shot at the age of 27 years old.... He fought Pac when Pac had only 1 eye due to accidental headbutt and was using winning gloves instead of Cleto Reyes and was tested for blood 2 days before the fight... Still he won only by a slim 2 point decision..
Never mind, Pac in history was the only fighter to knock him out cold whether he's prime or not.. Pac came at 108 and jumped to 130..
for fans who always claim that mexican fans make up excuses for a fighter, you threw in like 72 excuses for pac right there.
i would love to see what it could have been if he has fought Juan Manuel at 126...
I think he would have flat out murdered JMM at 126 prime for prime.

Pac is overrated. I'm working on a video about it.:D
i agree. pac is overrated. pacquiao is not #1 among the other great feathers of his era. he's #4.
morales>marquez>hamed>pacquiao>barrera :-)
Exactly, He Overpriced himself, so he wouldn't have to fight him. That means he ducked him!
i know......
i was phrasing it like i didn't agree with you but i actually was.
man..... don't give me a hard time. i'm still kinda drunk and haven't slept yet......
:bs2::bs2::bs2:
please......
unlike some on this site that "claims" that they knew manny could beat marco all along.
i thought manny had no chance in hell. i just hoped he would put up a good fight and not embarass himself. i thought he can make some money against marco and just move back to 122 where he belonged.
how the hell was i suppose to know the little fucker would end up beating marco , erik and juan and end up fighting all the way up to 135. shit. i thought going to 126 to fight marco was too much for his ass.
He wanted to fight JMM, but JMM was too much of a pussy. So, he took on Pac instead.
jmm didn't duck erik.
jmm just asked for way more money than they could pay him.
besides if jmm agreed , he wouldn't be able to say erik ducked him like everybody does.
I knew you were a stupid Pachak.:nana:
ha ha ha
just messing with you.
i told you before i was a marco guy before i even heard of pacquiao.
i hated erik 'til recently. my homegirl was his niece and she got me to liking him a bit.

Those wars definitely took their toll on him and you're right, Morales would fight anyone, I respect that a lot.
Morales was a very good fighter who beat a lot of the top fighters of his generation at or around his weight class, he was actually a very good boxer but wanted to brawl more than box and that made for very exciting fights sometimes it made fights harder than they should have been for him.
