I was just rewatching Jones/Tarver III, and I was so impressed with Roy in the first 6 rounds. He actually looked like Roy Jones again. I remember I was telling all of my friends and family who dont watch boxing, to watch Roy Jones, because he definetly aint going to be around forever. So then, I had a bunch of non boxing fans over my house to see this Roy Jones who I was talking about fight Glen Johnson. You guys obviously know the outcome. After Roy got knocked out that night, I just walked around my neighborhood, lost. I couldn't believe I just saw Roy Jones get KO'd again. before that, I thought Tarver just landed a lucky shot in the rematch, but that Johnson KO was brutal. Floyd Mayweather than became that untouchable P4P King, and now that he is gone. Who will be this generation's Whittaker,Jones,or Mayweather?
How do you know this? To assume the best American will avoid him is childish and condicending to American fighters. You act as if European fighters are not notorious for avoiding chalenges.I am not saying they are but you seem to believe Kessler is this monster no one wants to fight. If Mundine fought him he isn't as big of a threat as you think.:nana:
I believe most American fighters would avoid him as well. It's a matter of risk vs reward and Kessler just isn't that well known of a fighter over here.
Cotto and Manny
Whoever said Guzman is smoking crack..
The guy has not had a KO in six years. Thats not going to get you anywhere near the p4p king.
dont forget Pavlik either
i THINK JOAN GUZMAN AND THE PEDERSON BROS MIGHT BE SOMETHING SOON. PACMAN DEFENSE IS JUST TOO SUSPECT....AS SOON AS HE STARTS FIGHTING GUYS BIGGER THAN HIM WITH SKILLS HE'LL TAKE AN L
Oh, OK cool. I hope they are, but sometimes I wonder if he will actually ever make a meaningful fight again. The best Americans will avoid him you know.
i know, i hope he has a really significant fight in the near future,
a fight with jermain taylor would be very interesting
i never said you did,
re-read my post,
i said "some" make him out to be great already, i never said you,
all im saying is his biggest challenges are still to come

P4P is as much a popularity contest as much as it is about boxing skill.
Well that is true, but are we talking about making the correct decision or just the probable one.
I actually don't think that Kessler is the BEST choice, I'd say Cotto is, because he is already high on the list, is young and I'm not seeing anyone that I think would beat him. Except of course Floyd Mayweather, which clouds the picture considerably, if he ever comes back.
Maybe I need to look for someone much younger, and in that case I don't really know the answer. Not Gamboa anyway!
Where did I say he was great? I merely said I expect him to beat everyone else in his division, which I do. I also think he would beat Chad Dawson. Since I think this, I think he has a good P4P future, which is the point of the thread.

Don't you have to be great to top the P4P list?
i actually like kessler and i think he is good fighter but some make him out to be great when the real big fights and biggest challenges besides calzaghe are yet to come

As for point 4) I don't see what that has to do with it!
Well, he isn't all that well known over here, which would cause him some trouble in landing big fights.
Also, P4P is as much a popularity contest as much as it is about boxing skill.
Ha ha. The ironic thing is that in fact Kessler is not a bad call. He looks more likely than anyone to rule his current division and would then be able to move up to LHW where his only real competition would be Dawson and any of the old guys who are still sticking around. All that does rely on him actually being able to make fights though...
Other options are Pac, who arguably is already the P4P king, and if he were to beat Hatton at 140 would have done incredible things.
If Cotto gets past Margarito (which I think he will) then I don't see anyone who would beat him for a while, but he'd have to fight Williams and then I guess move up.
Williams himself would not be a bad shout if he were to beat Cotto or even Pavlik at 160.
And of course, Floyd will probably come back....
Ultimately though I don't think any of the guys I named are really even close to Mayweather/ RJJ skill levels, apart from Pacquiao maybe, so I'd say that P4P is going to be taking a step down from the heights in the near future.

Kessler is a bad choice.
1) He just isn't that good. Yes he is a good fighter, but top dog P4P material he is not.
2) It's not like he has all that much time to improve. Guy has 40+ fights.
3) His resume is weak as it is. He really needs to step up his comp to be considered even top 10.
4) He is not american and therefore not as well known.
I think he is a good choice. I think he will probably beat everyone at SMW and very likely at LHW too. Where you don't think he is good, I genuinely think he is one of the worlds best boxers. I agree he may find it difficult to make the matches that would get him up there.
As for point 4) I don't see what that has to do with it!
