That alone says why that fight won't happen. Most casual fans don't even know Chavez's kid fights. He has to go out with a bang and a fight with Cotto would be huge.
Keep in mind, Oscar does want to look good, but he knows Boxing fans aren't stupid and a fight against Chavez Jr, who is yet to fight a legit opponent, wouldn't garner much attention and seem as a ploy on Oscar's part to make a quick buck before he bounces.
But fighting Cotto would be massive to his credibility as a fighter taking on the consensus best fighter in the division on his way out when realistically he doesn't have to. It would be a sell out crowd who more than likely would be routing for Oscar to pull off what most consider a tough fight for him to win.
Win or lose, It's a win/win for Oscar
If Delahoya loses a fight with Cotto it further tarnishes his legacy. At some point I'm sure Delahoya wants to win and he can't beat Cotto. He's still a professional fighter and if he loses the only thing he wins is money. His reputation as a fighter will be shit. In his last 6 fights he's 3-3(should be 2-4). The only fighters he's beaten convincingly lately are Mayorga and Steve Forbes. I'm sure even Oscar the businessman has enough pride left as a fighter to want to go out a winner. If he loses he gives Arum (his promotional nemesis) momentum and he adds to his already tarnished reputation that he can't beat A level fighters. So this is not win/ win if Oscar loses the fight. That's why I think a fight with JCC might be more appetizing for him.
You're right but I don't think Oscar can beat Cotto. Delahoya has enough money and popularity that he would make big money in both of these fights. JJC jr has his fathers name which helps his marketability and promotion of this fight. I would rather see a fight with Cotto but I'm looking at it in terms of what Oscar might see as his best interest. He probably wants to go out with a win and JJC jr provides him with the best opportunity for that as well as a big purse.
I just don't think that today's casual boxing fan will know Chavez Jr or even remember Oscar fighting Chavez to garner any real excitement. Also, It's Oscar choosing his next opponent, not Chavez Jr trying to seek revenge for his father's 2 losses, plus I doubt Arum would put him against Oscar anyway.
Oscar is always game to fight the big names and there's no other big name close to his weight besides Cotto.
Oscar losing to Cotto won't necessarily make Oscar look bad if he puts on a great fight.
Wow, I would be very suprised. i don't think that fight has 1/10th the marketability that a Cotto fight would have.
Everyone knows JCCjr isn't ready. He has alot of fights but he's very young. Oscar isn't trying to sell to just the latino community, he's trying to sell to every boxing household in the nation and most people don't know who JCCjr is.
That would be a very stupid choice.

Everything you just said Scott is the reason why I picked JCC jr. All the cards have to be in Oscar's favor when he chooses fights like this. I don't think JCC jr can beat Oscar and like you said it would be huge in the hispanic markets. It would probably be promoted as a revenge fight for Both JCC sr and Jr.

ood post, i agree but i hope its not what happens, i pray that its cotto
I think JCC Jr is a very strong candidate. He is someone who Oscar looks at as beatable, and with smart promoting it would be a very big seller in Hispanic markets. From Arum's point of view it could make Chavez into a superstar, and if he loses he can always rebuild the kid.

Cotto would be the best option. He's arguably the best fighter he can fight and would mean huge dollar signs
A fight with Tito IMO would be a circus show and he simply can't make a weight that'll satisfy both camps. I think its wishful thinking considering we never got to see a rematch between the two, but 9 years later the fight makes no sense financially.
Being Oscar has stated he would announce his next opponent within the week, which he said last month, I truly believe he's waiting for the outcome of Cotto vs Margarito.
Actually, the fight makes ALOT of sense financially. ANY fight that has DLH makes sense financially.
Tito just can't make the weight, or at least thats what his father is saying. I also don't think that Tito would have a chance against DLH, he's been out of the game for too long.
I think Cotto if he beats Marg or maybe someone else if that doesn't happen. DLH wants to go out on top and I think this last fight has to be a meaningful one.
who said chavez jr? i mean i wouldn't mind seeing him get his ass kicked too by an actual fighter, but to waste Oscar's last hurrah on that, no way!

I think Cotto if he doesn't lose to Margarito.
Yeah, same here. DLH will fight the best fighter out there, he ducks no one. He may not win them all but he prepares himself and really tries every time, not much more you can ask from a fighter. He will be a huge loss when he goes.

I had thought Cotto too, but I read something today that made me wonder about that. If Cotto were to beat him, it would be a huge boost for Top Rank boxing. Why would Oscar want to risk making his top competitor's best fighter even bigger?
That's a good point since the 'cold war' has supposedly started again so hopefully they can resolve their differences for this fight because Cotto becoming a big star would help boxing.
But if they can't settle their difference, I expect a third Mosley fight or an outside shot for a Trinidad fight.
