Calzaghes best oponent was ? there seems to be a school of thought that Hopkins was his best oponent but was Hopkins just the best name on his record was Eubank at 28 a more difficult proposition than a 43 year old man was Kessler or Lacy more of a threat to Joe than Hopkins was at 43
who is the best oponent he has faced factoring the form/age they were in when he faced them
i say Kessler
WHo cares who his best opponent was? WE could spend all day debating it and not come up with an answer. Don t matter who his opponent was, JC found a way to win.
Eubank was way past his best and was training to fight at Light Heavy. Eubank took the fight at short notice, he had 2 weeks to make Super Middleweight.
u have to factor in Calzaghes lack of experience at that level to
Joe had a perfect style to beat Eubank lots of preassure dont let him work at his own pace and Joe was able to exploit his technical flaws and he was able to absorb Eubanks shots aswell this win gets played down waay to much ive read Eubanks autobiography and he made no excuses what so ever about his preperation he said he got beat fair and square
im not saying he was prime but he still had a lot to offer IMO
No.
Eubank then went on and should have won the Cruiserweight title against the man who KTFO David Haye.
Eubank was a force of nature. That was by far Calzaghe's best win because it was Eubank and because he was a rookie who had barely been beyond 3 rounds due to being so much better than the domestic and European opposition.
Hopkins? Top 5. Calzaghe's pretty past his peak as well now, which most people seem to be forgetting.

u guys can say it wasn't b-hop. its all good. the average joe can't see b-hops brilliance. and if his name is calzaghe, he can't see his right hand either....
dude what would of happend to Jermain Taylor if he had been more active against Pavlik in the second fight ? he would of caught with more punches and and ended up getting KTFO again IMO
if Hopkins had threw more leather at Calzaghe he would of lost more convincingly cause he fought to suvrive rather than win thats why he was getting his punches off then holding every 5 minutes trying to con the referee he was trying to steal the fight thats why it looked closer than the Kessler fight cause Kessler fought to win
i think Hatton fought to win againt PBF and paid the price for it where as i thought Zab jacked it in after 5/6 rounds as per usual and fought to survive
Hopkins was embarrasing running backwards for 12 rounds and faking injuries. He didn't even try to follow up after the flash knock down in R1. He's a spoiler not a fighter. No way is he the best opponent Calzaghe has faced.
to me it doesn't matter who gave joe a harder time.
i'm going off of who had the better creds/name recognition.
kessler was in his prime and hopkins and eubank was not but...... 20 years from now when a boxing fan looks up joe's record he's gonna say , "WOW! joe beat hopkins and eubank!!!"
the guy is probably not gonna say , "hopkins and chris was past prime. kessler and brewer were better wins."
and thats why this thread was made cause i understand that and wanted to establish who really was his best oponent rather than best name ya dig

B-Hop
Hopkins of course!!! who did he look bad against? Brenard of course, while @ 43 he still beat joke-cal-slappy...2 b da champ u have 2 beat da champ!!!!
u should base it on there credentials at that point in time if u think Mitchell had the better credentials at that point in time fair enough im just saying that his performance against Joe contradicted that when u view Brewers performance against Joe it leaves a good indication of what each respective fighter had left in the tank
its all about opinion im not saying your wrong im just saying i dont agree

Different fights though. Who's to say that wouldn't have ended in a couple of rounds if Brewer had floored Calzaghe?
Both were better wins than Hopkins IMO. Mind you, that was a prime Calzaghe back then - one who could outbox but also KO opponents.
the thread was joe's best opponents.
who you want me to put manfredo? bika?
it doesn't matter how joe did against them.
i'm listing top 10 off of paper records and name recognition.
lennox ktfo out of tyson. does that mean tyson wasn't one of his best opponents? certainly one of the biggest name wins.......
one of his Biggest names yes one of his best oponents no not at that stage in his career
Veit hahaha the same guy joe ko in one round?
Veit was as highly rated as Lacy back in the day. VERY similar to Kessler as well, although the Dane was probably slightly better in all departments.
just because brewer fought better against joe doesn't mean brewer was better.
mitchell at one point was considered #3 in the division behind ottke and joe.
i thought it was to list joe's best opponents?
is it joe's best fights and hardest fights?

Wasnt Eubank like 31/32 and semi-retired when joe calzaghe fought him?
No.

Kessler, because unlike Eubanks and Hopkins, he was in his prime. Joe fought a perfect fight against him.
gotta agree with u after i watched Calzaghe do that to Kessler i sat back and said damn this guy is a special fighter that does not come around that often
and ive been one of his biggest critics
